Century Considers New Animal Control Law Banning Barnyard Animals

October 20, 2013

The Town of Century is considering a new animal control ordinance that will ban barnyard animals and livestock within most areas of the town.

If the town council approves the ordinance, it would immediately become illegal to keep any horse, mule, donkey, goat, sheep or cattle within the town limits, except on property zoned as agricultural.

The council will hold a first public reading of the ordinance during their regular meeting at 7 p.m.  A second reading and public hearing will be held on November at 7 p.m., after which the council is scheduled to vote on the ordinance.

Looking into it “RECALL RULES WITH CITY CHARTER”… anyone for it?

  2. Frank on October 21st, 2013 3:25 pm

I say “LETS PASS A RECALL” on city leaders…

Folks who have owned property with livestock need to be grandfathered. Otherwise, get a good lawyer.

As a horse owner I’m very upset about this, our horses are a huge part of our family. To have a horse is more than just merely having “a pet”. I can’t believe this is even being considered. The animals that my kid & I choose to have should be just that, our choice. I would like to stress the fact that the council meeting on this will be held tonight, for those like myself that are affected, I’d encourage you to show up & share your thoughts.

The City Council is ONLY considering the ban. They want public input. This matter is being looked into due to the number of complaints that the city gets considering the look and smell of neighborhoods that have barnyard animals.

So if you are OPPOSED to the ban, GO TO THE MEETING and voice your opinion and have facts to back up your opinion.

If you ARE FOR THE BAN, again go to the meeting and voice your opinion and have facts to back up your opinion, especially if the smell and look of the property is bring down the property value on your street, or causing you any discomfort.

I am glad that I don’t live in Century.

Perhaps we should adopt an ordinance to keep the “town council” away from city limits. The duds running Century are the stink in Century

This is crazy! You should be able to have what you want on your land as long as the animals are taken care of. People wake up after Obamacare kicks in we are going to need these animals to survive. I pay a lot of taxes for my property in Century and the town needs to put more effort into cleaning up some of the houses and take the drug dealers off the streets! Let people have their animals after all we are in a rural area. Town needs to focus on other issues I.e. Streets and such. Leave the animals alone

Just trying to get the stink out of town.
No Industry so it must be the livestock.

    REGARDING:
“if I see an animal on someones land, under weight and not cared for you can bet I will call animal Shelter.”

Good for you even though it has absolutely nothing to do with this article.

    David for fat possums

Did I miss it? Where in the article did it say or imply this was being done because of animal abuse? Maybe the picture implys that…but the article never suggested that. It’s more government meddling in your private lives and messing with your rights. Some of the comments on here are scary in that some would so readily give away their rights AND OTHER peoples rights when they don’t even know why they are surrendering those rights.

I am sure they have checked into a grandfather clause. I just hate to think gov. is now trying to tell us what we can have as pets. Everyone needs to think of all the animals that are being abused and what the gov. is trying to stop. We have all seen on T.V. the abuse and everyone is crying DO SOMETHING, and now, they are trying to help stop some of the abuse, and everyone is crying that gov. is taking their rights away. I am all for animals being helped and if gov. has to do this then so be it. People need to remember that when you get an animal that you take on caring for that animal. No matter if dog, cat or horse and the room they need.
    Me, just saying

Kathy, is this law being considered because of animal neglect or abuse? Those horse look pretty healthy to me.

  16. Puddin on October 20th, 2013 9:15 am

I certainly hope they grandfather in those that already have animals. I cant imagine having a horse, for example, for years. Then being told I have to get rid of my pet because the laws change. Thats just wrong.

  17. Kathy on October 20th, 2013 9:04 am

To See this really makes me upset, if you can’t take care of Horses and other farm animals then don’t have them. How what you like to live like that.if I see an animal on someones land, under weight and not cared for you can bet I will call animal Shelter.

Just another ridiculous example of govt attempting to control our lives.
