Vehikle? Does Spelling Count In Bridge Work?

September 5, 2013

Does spelling count in bridge work? Several readers pointed out the “BIDGE” and “VEHIKLE” spelling errors to us Wednesday on electronic warning signs near a bridge undergoing work this week on Arthur Brown Road (above). We went by Wednesday night to see for ourselves, and we found the word “bridge” had been corrected. An attempt was made to correct the word “VEHIKLE”, but they still just didn’t get it quite right.

Escambia County is expected to continue work on the bridge again today and Friday from 8 a.m. until 8 p.m. on Arthur Brown Road at Boggy Creek, near the Walnut Hill Baptist Church. Drivers can expect lane closures and delays.

    REGARDING:
“It’s just phonics that is what is taught in schools now days.”

Nah, phonics is good even if we joke about it. Teaching people to spell based on sounds would include ph for the “f” sound so people learning via phonics wouldn’t call it foniks, it’s all part of the joke.

To be honest, though, many people aren’t bothering to learn to spell either because they don’t care or because their phones and computers are smart enough to clean up behind them.

David for careful writers and spellers

Good point, Molino Jim! Some of the comments have to be “decoded’.

Phonics has been taught for years, since the 1970’s, and actually makes spelling easier. This is just another sad commentary on the fall of our civilization.

Well it may have been bad spelling, but it obvioulsy got people to Notice the sign!

  9. Program Manager on September 5th, 2013 8:45 pm

Sorry folks but the Road Department did not place or program these signs.

    THANK GOD!

But it happens. Smile, laugh or cry but move on.

Don’t worry the state is working on it. If the school makes a F you give them a C and it makes it all right.

My auto correct messed me up. Should have been… painted

  12. Bammagirl on September 5th, 2013 5:10 pm

At least it wasn’t something paid Ted on the road…. Like SKOOL I stead of school… Or SPOT in stead of stop… Lol

” its one sign that blinks two messages. durrr.”

No, it was TWO signs blinking three messages. The words were spelled in the same incorrect manner on BOTH signs.

  14. Bronwynne Hollywood on September 5th, 2013 3:25 pm

To “speller”: You misspelled misspell. Twice! Sorry, I couldn’t resist. Lol

  15. observer on September 5th, 2013 2:57 pm

hey speller… its one sign that blinks two messages. durrr.

  16. molino jim on September 5th, 2013 2:44 pm

For those making some of the comments about “bad spelling”– look back on some of the comments William receives.

  17. Dennis on September 5th, 2013 2:25 pm

Even people who dont use those roads know that the work is happening now. Worked better than spelling correctly. Oh, btw, person wanting to give them pocket dictionaries-dont you need to know how to spell it to look it up-they knew what it meant , just couldnt spell it.. and yea I left all the apostrophes out.

Unfortunately this is not just confined to our area or even the South in general. While living in PA. decades ago some of the State park signs, the wooden engraved ones, were rife with simple spelling errors. I have lived or worked in many states east of the Mississippi for the last 35 years and this was a common thing everywhere. I guess you can never have enough edimucation.

Maby that was fodder for the perfect. That was a test for all the rite or right. Or maby a way to make you aware of the werk or work. Ha Ha

  23. Speller on September 5th, 2013 11:08 am

It’s one thing to mispell a word, or make a typo (don’t we all!). But when words are mispelled the same way on TWO DIFFERENT SIGNS, it’s obvious that someone can’t spell. And then to correct it incorrectly the same way on TWO DIFFERENT SIGNS?

Whoever programmed the signs was not asked to spell the name of some disease- — they were asked to spell bridge and vehicle — two words that should be in their vocabulary considering they are in the road/bridge industry.

Now, the question is can the person read well, or do they read on the level they spell? Will they follow the written instructions and plans for the bridge, or will they mess something up because of their reading level? That endangers all of us.

  24. Atmore G on September 5th, 2013 11:02 am

Anyone who claims to have never misspelled a word is probably not being entirely honest.. I know a lady who has a PHD in mathematics who has a problem with her spelling, but give her some math problems and she is great.. This poor guy or gal that programmed the sign has probably been joked about enough at work already..

  25. Molino resident on September 5th, 2013 10:55 am

Spelling does count…….just ask Alex Trebek.

  26. speed 313 on September 5th, 2013 10:48 am

  27. speed 313 on September 5th, 2013 10:46 am

at least everyone noticed the signs…..

  28. Just Plain Country on September 5th, 2013 9:52 am

At least the person who misspell these words is out WORKING and not living off your Tax dollars! Even Old McDonald was a bad speller and made it on TV.

  29. ammo22 on September 5th, 2013 9:40 am

I don’t git it….what’s rong with the sines!

  30. Vulcanrider on September 5th, 2013 9:37 am

Same thing happened during construction on Beal Parkway, the signs on both ends of the zone announced “Lane Clousers”….

Now THIS… just MADE my day!!!!

“An attempt was made to correct the word “VEHIKLE”, but they still just didn’t get it quite right.” …..ahahahahaha.

  33. Jacqueline on September 5th, 2013 8:15 am

Spelling may not count but Math (and engineering) sure does. ;)

  34. dnutjob1 on September 5th, 2013 7:10 am

They should do them all that way, then maybe people would actually pay attention to the sign instead of the phone or radio and actually drive. Now thats an idea! Thank you for the chuckle, it is good to laugh. By the way the road department employs heavy equipment operators not scholars. My grandpa always said not everyone can be a doctor or teacher, someone has to dig the ditch and build the roads they drive on. Life is good!!!

  35. what the? on September 5th, 2013 7:02 am

gob’t or steak werkers IT deaportmint progremers…

gotta love it…might make some run into the ditch trying to figir it all out.

This is what happens when ‘No Child Left Behind’ programs ruin our schools. Our schools have been dumbed down down to the point of no return. I remember as a child is you didn’t study you didn’t pass, and being kept a grade behind was enough to make you work harder, now they know that’s not going to happen so why bother?

  37. jeeperman on September 5th, 2013 6:17 am

You all missed the reason they spelled those words wrong.
They did it on purpose to get peoples attention.

This article proves it worked pretty durn good.

    Didn’t it?

  38. Jane on September 5th, 2013 6:03 am

Maybe whoever wrote this should stop using “spellchecker”…or get it put into the signs!

  39. David Huie Green on September 5th, 2013 5:43 am

    FONEKS WERKT FER ME

  40. Shannon on September 5th, 2013 3:44 am

Makes you wonder if the bridge will be repaired properly!!!

  41. Now that I think about it....... on September 5th, 2013 2:26 am

Considering all of the money wasted in Escambia Co.-can’t we at least give these folks a pocket dictionary to put in their trucks? I’m assuming that’s who’s responsible! WHOEVER PROGRAMS THESE SIGNS NEEDS A LITTLE HELP!! How embarrassing for them! & for all of us! It’s hard enough living in the north end of the county! We’re just a bunch of country hicks-MAYBE IT WAS DONE ON PURPOSE??!!

  42. Sarah Grace on September 5th, 2013 2:11 am

Well, of course, correct spelling does count. But, when in doubt, use common sense. Red or orange road signs are always a warning and the word NO thrown in should be enough of a clue to figure it out. Prayers for safety for us all as we drive.

  43. B on September 5th, 2013 1:45 am
