Highway 97 Driver Overturns In Cotton Field

September 10, 2013

An Atmore man found himself in high cotton late  Monday night after running off the road and overturning his vehicle into a field.

The man told first responders that he hit at least two deer on Highway 97 near Tungoil Road before losing control. His northbound Dodge Charger came to rest on its side in a cotton field. The man crawled out of the wreckage and walked about a third of a mile north along Highway 97 for help. The accident was reported about 11:25 p.m.

The man was transported by Atmore Ambulance to Atmore Community Hospital with minor injuries.

There was no obvious indications that the vehicle had struck a deer, and first responders were unable to local any sign of a deer along the highway. The accident is under investigation by the Florida Highway Patrol. Further details have not been released.

The Walnut Hill Station of Escambia Fire Rescue and the Escambia County Sheriff’s Office also responded to the accident.

Lisa, sounds like Pcola Paul has his insurance license. contact and damage to a vehicle with animals is covered by comprehensive coverage, whether it was a collision or not.

Lisa – acutally if you hit a deer it is covered by your comprehensive coverage, animals, tree limbs and the such are considered act of nature – from an insurance website the following is provided: The consequences for swerving to miss a deer can be significant in regards to your insurance policy too. Hitting an inanimate object with your vehicle is a collision. Collision accidents often come with higher deductibles and higher surcharges.

Swerving to miss a deer is a natural reaction. It takes focus to consider all the repercussions of swerving. A deer can cause major damage to your vehicle and cause injury, but the potential is much greater if you plow into a tree. Take your foot off the gas and keep a straight course to reduce damage and higher insurance rates.

Am I covered? Deer accidents are covered under the comprehensive coverage of your insurance policy. If you are unsure of your coverage, locate your declarations page to verify. A quick phone call to your agent or customer service representative can also clarify what coverage you have listed on your vehicle.

Sometimes after a deer accident, a tow may be required. If you have comprehensive coverage, the tow will automatically be covered as part of the claim. If you do not have comprehensive coverage, but have roadside assistance, your tow will be covered. No comprehensive coverage plus no roadside assistance, means you will be on your own for both the damage of your vehicle and the tow.

    1. Hit a cow in Iowa once, really tweaked the front of my vehicle. Hope the driver is okay….For the deer, probably ran off with internal injuries….

Pcola Paul, it would never count as comp. anyway, wreck is a wreck, comp. is when a rock hits your windshield, not a deer.

the driver is probably claiming the accident was because of Deer so that his insurance claim would go under his comprehensive coverage and not his collision coverage, I think the police report and lack of evidence of deer being involved will hurt his claim. glad he was able to walk away from the wreck.

Just because you hit a Deer doesn’t mean it killed it,
2 weeks ago in cantonment a deer ran out and hit the side
And left a good size dent , the deer fell and went crazy for
a sec and then ran. I can’t see the whole truck so maybe he
was hit . More people should not judge it’s not your job.

Hmmmm, I think I may have to agree with the cops, if he hit “at least” 2 deer, why is there NO damage to the front end of his car? You can see it very plainly in the photo here.
I’m not accusing him of any wrong doing-just pointing out a fact. Very happy that he only received minor injuries, could have been alot worse!

Poor ole deer always getting a bad rap.
    Although it is usually deserved.

By the way, it doe’s not look like a cotton patch provides a soft landing.

That curve gets them every time.

Angular Momentum is the key to getting past Tung Oil Road.

I am glad there were no serious injuries.

I feel bad for man. Me, I have hit small deer before and had a lot of damage to my vehicle. The best hope for man and deer.
