Heavy Rains Cause Flooding, Damage

September 25, 2013

Thunderstorms brought heavy rainfall and flooding to the North Escambia area Tuesday evening.

According to the National Weather Service in Mobile, Doppler radar estimated up to four inches of rain fell in just over an hour. The Atmore Police Department reported extensive flooding in their city, particularly in the downtown area.

Several downtown Atmore businesses and residents reported minor damage from flooding.

In Florida, minor street and creek flooding occurred, but there was no damage reported.

It could have been standing 12-15″ at places due to runoff…but standing and rainfall amount is not the same thing.

    >>Why conflicting reports on the amount of rainfall ? was it 4″ or was it 12″ like NWS said

The National Weather Service (NWS) did not say 12″ of rain. Their statements issued last night said 3-4 inches, and I just verified with the head of the Mobile forecast office that 3-4 inches is correct per Doppler radar estimates, just like our story says.

Why conflicting reports on the amount of rainfall ? was it 4″ or was it 12″ like NWS said..Dec 2009 was the last time we saw such an enormous amount of water fall like this…it was 12-15″( +/- ) in a 4 hour span..it was tough in Atmore..I know of a few homes that were flooded this time around..AGAIN ! There are 3 important factors when buying a home 1) DRAINAGE 2) DRAINAGE 3) you guessed it
