Tuff Times: Burglars Strike Thrift Store That Benefits Homeless Animals

August 17, 2013

A burglary is under investigation at a Cantonment thrift store that benefits homeless and orphaned animals.

The burglary was discovered Friday morning at the Tuff Times Thrift Store on Neal Road, just off Highway 29. Owner Amanda Gifford said hundreds of dollars worth of items were stolen and the store was damaged by thieves. The thieves ransacked an area until they found, and stole, the video surveillance equipment.

She said the thieves entered the store by busting out a window air conditioning unit.

“I work extremely had to keep my prices very low to give the community a little place to shop that’s inexpensive, and I also use the funds to turn around and help homeless and orphaned animals in the community. It’s just a shame that there are people out there that would even steal from a second-hand store,” Gifford said.

The burglary is under investigation by the Escambia County Sheriff’s Office.  Anyone with information on the burglary is asked to call the Escambia County Sheriff’s Office at (850) 436-9620 or Crime Stoppers at (850) 433-STOP.

I’m so sorry this happened to you Amanda. I know how hard you work, cause I am a small rescue myself. It’s not cheap trying to rescue animals when you have to pay for everything out of your own pocket, like I do, and like you do. If there is anything I can do for you sweetie, just let me know.

Lowlife will do anything from stealing flowers from a gravesite, stealing from elderly and family, animal abuse and more. Keep living like that and I promise you, what goes around, comes around. May karma bite them in the butt…

On top of everything else, whom ever broke in knew to hunt for the surveillance equipment and took it also– so no video of the scum bags.

We love shopping at this store. The lady here is super nice and works hard for a good cause. This establishment has been broken into many times. Sometimes there is cooperation from the police department, and sometimes I think it get a bit lax.

I hope someone will come forward with information so the thieves can be caught. I also hope the police department works super hard to bring these criminals to light and justice.

I would really hate to see this store have to close down.

It’s really scraping the bottom to do this! You have someone that tries to help the helpless animals out there that end up in the hands of irresponsible people, then end up breeding or homeless. Animals are a not a necessity, but actually a luxury to become a family friend, not a guard dog for a drug house or a fighter for a status symbol! Sure hope When they get caught, the sentencing requires community service at the animal shelter, with a pooper scooper! Next time I come by your shop, I will stop by and give you a donation to help get back where you need to be and hope others follow suite.

Despicable!! There is no excuse for this kind of crime. With all the social give-away programs and entitlements in place, nobody has to steal and burglarize out of desperation to survive, .

If anyone saw anything, please speak up…or call Crimestoppers with a tip! First a school, now a thrift store that benefits animals…really, really wrong! Let’s turn this into a positive…donate your items to the store that was robbed!

It is a real shame that people don’t respect other people’s things. It doesn’t matter that the things were for sale, the owner had to pay for it. I hope the law gets the people who did this and throw the book at them. Sorry for your loss!!!

Maybe it,s the same ones that broke into Molino Elementary school, hopefully the cameras at the thrift store will help identify them .

Maybe because if it’s location, just wonder why this place has been broken into sooo many times. Hopefully they will find out who did this. Sad.

It’s a shame that a hard working honest person can’t have anything without some low life stealing from them.

People are getting stupid. I know that’s where I did my community service at but that’s the worst I have gotten in trouble and I learned after that. Hope you find out who did it Mrs. Gifford!
