Pedestrian Killed On Davis Highway

August 27, 2013

A pedestrian was struck and killed last night on North Davis Highway.

The Florida Highway Patrol said 17-year old Mason Lloyd Maines was northbound on Davis Highway as 53-year old Daniel David Ducker of Pensacola tried to cross the highway south of Northcross Lane at 10:24 p.m. Ducker failed to see Maines’ 2005 Toyota Tacoma and stepped into the path of the vehicle.

Ducker was transported to Sacred Heart Hospital by Escambia County EMS where he was pronounced deceased at 11:13 p.m.

Maines and his passenger, 20-year old Walter Devin Cheek of Pensacola, were not injured.

I am really shocked to hear about Danny Ducker. He use to stay at the hotel i was managing 11 years ago. He cared a lot about his daugthers. Danny went through a lot of problems but was a very cheerful person.

It is so inconceivable to know he is no longer in this world. May his soul rest in peace..

Danny was my Cousin and I read that he had accepted The Lord as his Savior? I pray that is true. I am praying for the young Man that hit Danny and ended Danny’s life. That would be such terrible burden to carry the rest of your life.

Mason people are praying for you that you will find peace in The Lord through this tragedy. Let something good come out of this tragedy.

May The Lord heal all involved in this tragedy.

I met Danny Ducker and his family as a new pub owner in the early 90’s. I have been on many carpenter jobs with Danny and knew him as well as his family very well. I spoke to Danny less than a month ago and he was experiencing difficult times but he never waivered from being the same Danny I knew. He spoke of love for his family. I will always love and remember him as my brother.

we loved danny and whenever we needed anything, we could call danny and he would be there to help.we know that he is in a better place and is at peace but we will greatly miss him. ,my heart also goes out to the young man driving the truck, something he will have to live with all his life, it was just an accident that happened and nobody knows why!!

I knew Danny Ducker personally and he was a good man and a good friend. We started church service for the people that live on the streets around Davis Highway and Danny provided a place for us to meet. He would get there early, mow the grass and set everything up. He would bring people to the service and would help anybody that he could. He had a big heart. He loved his family and talked about them all the time. He had a great sense of humor and kept everyone around him laughing. We will miss Danny. I know for a fact that his faith was in the right place and I know where he is right now. I was told that Danny is a fantastic carpenter. So he is in good company. I look forward to seeing him again soon.

Hay man being a homeless person for many years not once was i EVER called a vagrant or a bum alot of people are just misplaced in society. From what i understand mr ducker was not homeless. Before calling somebody a name walk a mile in their shoes. I sold the journal on davis highway for many a year and i do remember some crazy driving. I dont ever recall a speed limit sign on that road AT ALL. Maybe something needs to be done about that. HUM. im not homeless anymore as i found a wonderful man who helps me and loves me unconditionally. Although i never met you or knew of you. . Rip mr. Ducker. You are now pain free and dont have to worry about the things of this o world any more. To his family my heart goes out to you. MAY THE LOVE OF GOD BLESS YOU ALL

I personally knew mr.ducker and its sad to hear that he is no longer with us. But if davis highway had a speed limit maybe things like this would not happen. The cross walks are not always the safest place to cross either.i was using the cross walk and got hit by a car myself lucky enough i surived. To the family of mr.ducker my heart deeply goes out to u he is in a better place but will be greatly missed and loved

Sad to see anyone perish, the below commenter is correct. That area is flooded with tranisents and vagrants that do not cross at the crosswalk at all times of day. I don’t know wether its complacency of the vagrants or their judgement is impaired. due to years of drug use or being impaired at the time or both but they seem to take risks crossings uch a busy highway.

Using the crosswalks is risky enough as it is but darting across is even worse.

It all comes down to common sense folks. Your flesh and bones will be ripped apart against a 2,000 pound vehicle moving at 45 miles per hour. Its just logic.

I also cringe when I see bicyclists right next to moving traffic. I know its perfectly legal to ride but the risk is just not worth it these days. With the increasing number of distractions inside the vehicle, you couldn’t pay me to run or ride in anything but a vehicle in or close to traffic. Sad because I love to ride. I go to a closed course or trail to run and bike.

Some cities have the space and ability to not build the sidewalk so close to the road so biking and running can be done at a much safer distance away from traffic.

    Id rather live!

West Florida Hospital is no longer trauma center. It has not been for many years. Seriously injured people can not be taken there and must go to a hospital with a trauma center.

More curious: With West Florida Hospital literally 5 blocks up Davis, why did EMS take him to Sacred Heart over 3 miles away?

Most of the pedestrians fail to push the button to notify the walk/dont walk signal to change for them. These newer signs dont automatically give a “walk” signal.

Far to many chose to cross the street at whatever point they desire without weighing the consequences of not being seen by approaching traffic.

he was not using a cross-walk. at least 150′ from the nearest one. this area is FLOODED with vagrants and homeless people. i’m surprised accidents like this don’t happen more often.

LEO will not stop and write a ticket for “jaywalking”…

heck, they are too busy trying to track down real lawbreakers…

    it is …what it is…sad.

It doesn’t say whether he was using a crosswalk or not, but I have nearly hit people myself on Davis Highway at all times of the day.

People don’t use the crosswalks, or they don’t wait for the signal to Walk, and stuff like this happens.

If they started writing tickets to people for not using the crosswalks, we might see fewer people hit by cars all over the area.
