Man Allegedly Beats Brother With Bat, Threatens To Kill Him

August 8, 2013

A Jay man is behind bars for allegedly beating his brother with a bat and leaving him lying in a driveway along a rural road outside Century.

The Escambia County Sheriff’s Office found the victim beaten and lying in the middle of a driveway in the 2900 block of Highway 4A just east of Killam Road The victim told deputies that his brother, 53-year old Steven Douglas Andrews, struck him repeatedly with a baseball bat and said he would break his knees and kill him.

The victim told deputies that he is homosexual and Andrews does not like him for that reason, according to a Sheriff’s Office report.

The mother of the brothers told deputies Andrews  had also placed a phone call to her saying that he was going to beat the victim with a baseball bat, teach him a lesson and kill him.  The mother said she tried to stop Andrews from visiting, but heard him pull into the driveway and the altercation start.

The victim was transported to Baptist Hospital by Escambia County EMS for treatment of his injuries.

Andrews fled the scene before deputies arrived but was later taken into custody by the Santa Rosa County Sheriff’s Office at an address on Highway 4 in Jay.

Andrews was charged with second degree felony aggravated battery on a person using a deadly weapon. He remained in the Escambia County Jail with bond set at $50,000.

I know this family and I am so sad for all of them. I know there must be so many mixed emotions for all of the siblings and their mother. I pray God’s best for all of you. Many of God’s miracles started with a problem. I know Steve to be the kind of person who would give you the shirt off of his back if you needed it. I know Johnny to be the same kind of person. But we (and they) all have problems. May the Lord give this family grace and mercey and peace and hope in this difficult time. And he who is blameless of any sin can cast the first stone.

    REGARDING:
“He needs to be charged with a hate crime as well.”

    Probably not.

Hurting people just because you don’t like members of that group is considered a hate crime. In this case, the brother admits his brother does not like him and has not liked him for a long time. (It happens.) His sexual orientation MAY be part of why he doesn’t like him, but we don’t KNOW it is the ONLY reason. If it were the only reason, then yes, it would likely be treated as a hate crime if he were convicted.

He may have had reasons to attack completely separate from dislike of a group of people of which his brother claims to be a member.

That brings us to the other thing. Quite often sentencing is harsher for hate crimes but conviction for the crime itself is needed first. A hate crime didn’t occur if a crime didn’t occur.

    AND
“How is a “hate crime” worse than the “ordinary” crime of beating someone with a baseball bat?

It is a matter of motive.

If someone attacks you because you are obnoxious, it is at least somewhat understandable and you may have even provoked the attack. If they attack you because you are a Smurf and they hate all Smurfs, the attack is for something you haven’t done and which you can’t change. Further, it means all Smurfs everywhere are in danger from that person. Therefore he is more dangerous to people everywhere.

He might be charged with a slew of more serious charges by the SA.
The police just charge him with what they think will keep him in jail.
Then the SA reviews the charges to see if they are appropriate and they may be changed up or down.

    @please explain…

If the reasoning behind Andrews attacking his brother was due to the fact the he was homosexual, then it is a hate crime. I’m more irritated that he wasn’t charged attempted murder and put in jail on no bond!

There are obviously other factors involved, likely alcohol. But this most definetly is NOT in Steve’s character, or at least not the Steve I know. With that said, it is certainly wrong to do what he did no matter who the victim is. He’s known the victims sexual orientation for many years now, so why this explosion now?
I’m just going to pray for everyone involved!

The “hate crime” tag is such nonsense in my my opinion…dead is dead no matter what you call it.

“Lord, it scares me to death knowing I have my own grandchildren growing up in this crazy cruel world.
What are we going to do?”

Console yourself with the understanding this is the best generation on record. Less killing, less crime, more honest law enforcement than what history tells us previous generations faced. Okay, maybe not THAT much of a consolation but add the fact that our ancestors at least survived long enough to produce us and there is still hope.

Do the best you can and trust in the Lord.

He needs to be charge with a hate crime as well.

Of course he could be charged with a hate crime. He is male, white and straight.

  11. Marie on August 8th, 2013 9:27 am

Couldn’t he also be charged with a hate crime?

What in the world is going on these days?
I honestly believe this world is slowly coming to an end!
Brother against brother, neighbor against neighbor…….
    People killing parents and grandparents……..
Lord, it scares me to death knowing I have my own grandchildren growing up in this crazy cruel world.
What are we going to do?

  13. hmmm on August 8th, 2013 6:46 am

Second degree aggravated battery with a deadly weapon? $50000 bond? Really? How about attempted murder, or even possibly a hate crime. He said he was going to beat him with a baseball bat, break his knee caps and then kill him. Premeditation? Our justice system is set up for the criminals not the victims.

Anyone who can’t control themselves is a threat to others. If he did that to his brother, what if he got mad at someone…he might do the same or worse to them. Get this guy off the streets!
