Don’t Want A $456 Ticket? Slow Down In School Zones

August 19, 2013

Zoom through the Ernest Ward Middle or Molino Park Elementary school zone at 45 mph and it will cost you … $456 to be exact. Make it 50 miles an hour, and you’ll be talking to a judge.

It’s back to school week in Escambia County, and that means slowing down in school zones. And whether it is Ernest Ward, Molino Park or one of dozens of other schools, law enforcement will be out in force enforcing school zone speed limits. Escambia Fire Rescue and Escambia County EMS will also be in several school zones in an attempt to slow drivers down.

If you are caught speeding in a school zone, be prepared for a big hit on your wallet, not mention your vehicle insurance rates.

Here is a list of fines if motorists are caught speeding in school zones in Escambia County:

  • 1 – 9 mph over the speed limit: $156.
  • 10 – 14 mph over the speed limit: $306.
  • 15 to 19 mph over the speed limit: $406.
  • 20 – 29 mph over the speed limit: $456.
  • 30 plus mph over the speed limit: Mandatory court appearance.

And if you fail to stop for a school bus that is loading or unloading students, that a $271 fine.

Sometimes it depends on who you are. Several years ago my first-grade daughter was hit by a car in a school crossing zone. It was slow speed impact and she wasn’t hurt much, just rolled over the hood. The next day the owner of the car (a well connected member of the local VFD) called to see what I planned to do about his bent hood.

Yo CLINT…School Zones are not that long…they don’t take that much of your precious time…just slow down or go another way!!! Speeding through a school zone…be it 1 or 20…you should get ticketed!

And I agree with MB about the Tate area, especially Tate School Road. They did not have a school zone there until a few years ago, when working with Larry Newsome got one installed…BUT…It has NEVER been enforced. Don’t understand why the Tate Resource Officer can not enforce the zone…but that don’t happen either. It is like a drag race…daily!

I saw a group of children getting off the bus on Airport Blvd. These children had to cross the busy street and walk into another lane, with traffic going towards the bus. Children should NEVER have to cross the road. Tax money is wasted on so much crap. Why not spend it on making the bus process safer as a whole.

I have been tailgated many times in the school zone by Beulah Elem. and one time was even passed during the school zone time when the lights were flashing. I will not speed up until I pass the “End Zone” sign. However, a few years ago I had noticed the lights were not working for two days when they should have been so I stopped at the school and told the office people who said they would fix it. I don’t have kids in that school, but I stopped anyway for the children. We should all put the childrern ahead of our schedule. They are the most precious resource.

Hold on for just a thought! 20-29 mph over the limit @ a school zone, 6′ fence… $456? Over that ya have a mandatory face to face with your local court house! Hummm, my grand babies getting on & off the bus w/out that 6′ fence, traffic going crazy on hwy 97, & the fine for failing to stop for a school bus loading or unloading our children, the hurried speeders only get a $271 fine!!! Is this speed zone more important $$$ than the safety of our children exposed getting on & off the buses?? I don’t get it!! Time we start asking questions to our elected officials!

I forgot to add….thank you LEO for patroling the Atmore speedway. I’m fixin to get a helmet to wear when I drive hy97. According to FHP veterans, It’s like fishin in a barrel catching speeders up here”. Well, the barrel is needing emtying, I’m getting tired of you stupid drivers trying to kill us up here. Slow down & drive like you have at least a little sense even though you have none.

  7. Biscuit on August 19th, 2013 10:29 pm

To Molino Jim: the reason they all speed in school zones……they’re stupid!!!!! But you knew that anyway! Retired LEO…..we all know that!

First day of school last year my daughter did not pay attention and went 50mph in a school zone…… Total cost with the ticket, court fees and everything else came to $1,200.. plus one weekend picking up trash on the side of the road.

I hate to say it from the perspective of the wallet but these penalties are worth it to save lives.

  9. Concerned Grandparent on August 19th, 2013 1:38 pm

The speeding fines seem reasonable to me. I just think they need to make the fine for not stopping for a school bus that is loading and unloading students much higher than $271.00. That seems much worse to me than going 10 miles over the speed limit. Let’s all watch out for our kids and grandkids as they go off to school. They are irreplaceable and depend on us to protect them.

  10. jeeperman on August 19th, 2013 12:14 pm

The fines are not extreme at all, nada one bit.
Bump them up to $1000 minimum at 1 mph over.
Does not bother me a bit because I won’t be breaking the speed limit.
As the saying goes….”Speed cost money”.
In better equipment AND speeding fines.

The trees need cut back from the flashing light so you can see it in advance going south on Hwy 97. That would help us alot

  12. David on August 19th, 2013 10:15 am

Joe Bagofdoughnuts , if it comes down to money in your opinion is “what it comes down to as you say- (which is sad) how much do you figure a child’s life is worth Joe ?Mine are priceless.

  13. clint on August 19th, 2013 10:02 am

At David hit a kid 1mph under the speed limit.. whats the difference. you missed my point.

  14. Maria on August 19th, 2013 9:40 am

Also stop talking and driving very Dangerous.
If you’re driving and talking you will forget about your speed .

  15. Joe Bagofdoughnuts on August 19th, 2013 9:02 am

It always comes down to money.

  16. molino jim on August 19th, 2013 9:00 am

I understand the speed zones and the needs. At Molino Park the annoying thing is to be driving the posted 20mph and have a driver get into the marked area, speed up to get into the turn lane and pass other cars speeding, so they can drop of a kid at the school. If I can slow down why can’t the parent dropping off their kid slow down also?

  17. mom on August 19th, 2013 8:50 am

Just to say…someone hits one of my children because they are speeding and in a hurry, the fine they pay would be the least of worries. People know when buses are out and they know when school is in so leave early enough to be able to abide by limits. I say Thank you to the Sherriff’s Dept. for having deputies monitor our schools.

  18. comnsense on August 19th, 2013 8:25 am

If you kill a kid going 1 mph over the limit then you’d kill him going 5 under the limit. Just saying…..

  19. MB on August 19th, 2013 8:02 am

They need to “police” around Tate HS. Those kids are out of control!! Someone is going to get hurt bad or worse!!!

  20. Greg on August 19th, 2013 7:49 am

Anybody know what time the School Zone will be active at Molino Park?

  21. David on August 19th, 2013 7:15 am

Some think 1 mph is extreme and scoff.
Hit a kid and injure or kill them @ 1 mph over and I hope you spend the rest of your life in prison. A limited mentality to justify speeding is extreme. Killing a kid is extreme and its final. A limited I.Q. person always trys to justify speeding.

  22. GOOD on August 19th, 2013 7:03 am

GOOD !!!!!!!!! People need to slow down period. If you think you have to speed to make it on time you need to leave earlier. And too I think some people need to look up the definition of “LIMIT” in the dictionary “speed LIMIT” is not a suggestion

  23. clint on August 19th, 2013 6:26 am

Just a little extreme. maybe 20 and over is justified, but 1mph over 156, ridiculous.
