Free Food For 500 Families, School Supplies Saturday In Century

August 23, 2013

Several groups are joining forces for a food, school supply and clothing giveaway this Saturday in Century.

Catholic Charities of Northwest Florida, the Florida Department of Children and Families and Americorp will present the “Back to School Bash” at Showalter Park on Hecker Road from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m.

Vendors from Escambia County will provide information and resources in the park, and Vineyard Hands Ministries will provide free school supplies. There will also be free health screenings and free hot dogs and chips.

Beginning at 11 a.m. Farm Share will hold a free food distribution in the park for up to 500 families. The food — including kids’ snacks, yogurt, water, crackers and cereal — is only available with a valid form of Florida identification to residents of  Century and the North Escambia area. There are no other eligibility requirements.

Alabama residents are ineligible for the food giveaway.

In the event of rain, the event will be rescheduled for Sunday.

I don’t ever get this stuff because of certain people commenting about handouts, my husband works 2 jobs, we have kids in school, they get free meals @ school, we do get WIC & I almost decide it’s not worth it when I get in line @ grocery stores & the slack doesn’t just come from other customers, although some people think they should cut that program out because they never got help. I never applied for food stamps, don’t smoke, drink, etc., I feel there’s always people worse off besides, I still care what people think of me & I really don’t want anybody thinking I’m there for handouts, I do know of people going there just to get stuff when both man & woman work & they don’t have any dependents unless it’s married kids & their kids living with them @ times mooching, but I’m not trying to complain it’s just aggravating

I’m with molino mom. Thanks to all the volunteers and charities that are making this happen.
May all who need some help receive it.
Although it did not mention giving away brains and basic human kindness for some commenting here.

Just because we live off of food stamps we are both disabled me and my husband he is on peritoneal dialysis for 4 years now he is still waiting on a kidney transplant. Because his kidneys are shutting down. I don’t ask for handouts or anything for free. it helps when it’s needed to help us. you cannot judge peo and get food stampsple just .because they cannot work. and get food stamps. you go and try to do everything on your own. and see how fast it takes you to actually speak up and say I need the help

    >So, the food is given away in Century, but Century residents are not eligible?

No sure how you come up with that. From the story:

The food..is only available with a valid form of Florida identification to residents of Century and the North Escambia area. There are no other eligibility requirements.

Alabama residents are ineligible for the food giveaway.

Feeding the people, awesome! Feeding those wanting a handout, NOT awesome.

I’d say bring your last four paystubs and last year’s tax form and let’s just see who is working their butt off just to get by and then feed them.

I hope these programs target the working poor families that make ends meet without EBT cards and foodstamps. These are the ones that look for bargains and generic brands all year long!!!.
