Alabama Man Critical After Chumuckla Highway Wreck

July 23, 2013

An Alabama man was critically injured in a single vehicle crash Monday night near Chumuckla.

Cory Lee Edward Fuston, age 24 of Robertsdale, was transported to Sacred Heart Hospital in Pensacola following the 7:24 p.m. crash on Chumuckla Road just north of Willard Norris Road.

According to the Florida Highway Patrol, Fuston was northbound on Chumuckla Highway in heavy rain when the right side tires on his 2005 Chevrolet Silverado traveled off the pavement and onto the grass shoulder. After traveling for about 180 feet, Fuston attempted to pull the vehicle back onto the roadway. He lost control and struck a tree.

The accident remains under investigation by the Florida Highway Patrol.

As Cory’s mom, I thank you from the very bottom of my heart Mr. Bailey, and all the emergency personnel who took care of my son. You will forever be in my heart and prayers.

Just FYI, Mr. Bailey was the first or second person on the scene after the accident. He stayed with the victim until the ambulance arrived. Also, yes, there was another accident around 5am the next morning in the exact same place. A cow wandered into the road from the pasture where the truck, hit the fence and knocked it down. Prayers for a complete recovery to all!

Just so everyone knows, we did not think anything badly of mr baileys statement. it was just a general statement. texting and driving are a horrible combination. Agreed, whole heartedly, however, cory didn’t even have a phone w/him, so that wasn’t the issue. we do appreciate the prayers and well wishes. and cory is recovering wonderfully. thank you and God Bless

Most won’t believe this but this morning around 5 am the fog was heavy and someone hit a full grown cow in the exact spot as the wreck yesterday with Cory. They was driving a pt cruiser and the cow had gotten out and was crossing the road.

@ Charles bailey: I have traveled Chumuckla highway quite a few years also and I am sure the right side of the road is not the only side that people wreck on. And I’m sure people who have wrecked on Chumuckla highway, including Cory, doesn’t mean to wreck in the first place. And since this incident in particular was due to heavy rain, I know that you weren’t referring to Cory when you said that people just run of the pavement in perfect weather or for no obvious reason. And I’m sure texting while driving or talking on the phone plays a big role in some wrecks I will go ahead and let the family of Cory know that you weren’t trying to insinuate that he was doing either of those things even though it sounds like maybe you were. And if this post doesn’t make sense to you then maybe you should read yours again.

I live close to where this accident happened and traveled chumuckla hwy. every day for the last thirty years. Every time I travel this road some one runs off the right side of the road on to the soft shoulder. I would estimate that one out of every five cars run off the side of the road or the right side wheels are nearly off the road and this is in perfect weather and there is no obvious reason. There has been many accidents and deaths on chumuckla hwy. caused by running off the right side of the road.

I suspect that talking or texting on the phone plays a part in some of it. I would like to ask every one that travels chumuckla hwy. to pay more attention to your driving and please stay on the pavement.

I pray that Mr. Fuston has a full recovery his injuries.
