Teen Cited By FHP Following Bratt Wreck

June 20, 2013

A Century teen was injured in a single vehicle accident Wednesday morning in Bratt.

The Florida Highway Patrol said 16-year old Autumn Ates of Century was traveling northbound on Pine Barren Road just south of Bratt Road at a high rate of speed. She failed to negotiate a curve in the road and traveled onto the shoulder of the roadway. Her 1997 Lincoln Town Car then began to slide sideways on the shoulder and the left side struck a culvert.

The Town Car began to overturn and came to rest on its left side of the shoulder of Pine Barren Road. Ates was wearing her seatbelt at the time of the crash.

Ates was transported by Atmore Ambulance  to Sacred Heart Hospital in Pensacola where she was treated and released.

According to the Florida Highway Patrol, Ates was cited for driving too fast for conditions. The Walnut Hill Station of Escambia Fire Rescue also responded to the call.

Best wishes to Ms Ates & her family. People will think I am crazy but this is the best thing that could have happened to this young driver. My daughter had a wreck that made her the safest driver on the road because it made a believer out of her. The officer was standing by the pick-up she had been driving and was holding her license when I got there. He said he couldn’t believe it, she hadn’t had the license 24 hours! She hit another car with a family inside leaving a church so I knew the Lord had protected all of them. Accidents are a nightmare for the driver and are never forgotten.

Many of us were in accidents when we were young, even some of us old fools too, because we were simply not driving safely, which covers a multitude of bad decisions and actions.

I pray for this young ladies recovery and may she benefit from the lesson. Us too.

I understand totally defending your daughter but you’ve also got to teach her… Enabling her to think that this was not her fault only causes more issues in the future. Be thankful she wasn’t seriously injured and consider not letting her drive for a while.

I would like to say that our entire family is so thankful to God for seeing Autumn through her wreck. I personally wrecked my own car several years ago and it is a
terrible feeling. Things happen so fast and anyone of us can have an accident at anytime. The fact that she is sixteen makes no difference that it would if she was 25 and accident is still just that an accident. God has been good to us and if the only problem that comes from this accident is a slight increase in ins. than we will take that. We could be having to make funeral plans today instead, we are just praying that her wounds heal quickly.

I’m sorry Mom, but I have agree with LISA, it takes some effort to flip a1997 Lincoln Town Car, not a “safe driver”. I’m glad you appreciate the fact that she survived and thank God for it, but, hopefully high insurance rates will keep her of the road till she matures some. It’s obvious you love your daughter, but, don’t overestimate her abilities or responsibilities!

Your daughter flipped a car while driving @ a high rate of speed, she’s only 16, where did you find in a dictionary that she was a safe driver, lets see if that safe driver gets you a discount on your ins. Lol

@ Rhonda Currie, you can rant all you want about that driver not flying down the road, however, she was speeding in the true sense of proper driving. A driver should not be driving in excess of the conditions, regardless of any posted limit. A driver must remain diligent and in due control of the vehicle at all times. If this were to be the case then the so called accident would not take place.
Yes she should be cited for not maintaining due control of her vehicle and not driving at a proper speed for the conditions.
It is good that she was wearing her seat belt and was not seriously injured. She will be a more cautious driver from this lesson.

@mom – thanks for the update and I am truly glad your daughter will be ok. However, what information is posted on this website is public record released from police reports. Northescambia doesn’t just post things to be spiteful – they do it to release public info to the public. and if you don’t want to be upset about inane comments that people leave on comment feeds, it is usually best to not even open up the can of worms by visiting those feeds.

    REGARDING:
“it was an accident that could not be prevented ”

Not saying anything against anybody here, but would it have happened at ten miles per hour?
If not, then there was a way to prevent it.
    If so, then maybe.

    David for safe children

My phone went dead before I finished FYI my daughter was not flying down this road !!!!!!! The officer was NOT even going to cite her for anything and his superviser made him since conditions were wet she was supposed to slow down below the speed limit which she did not do however I don’t want anyone thinking she was FLYING because she was not and it was an accident that could not be prevented and it happened for a reason and she has learned from it seeing how she is scared to death could have died and has lost her vehicle so again if you don’t have anything nice to say don’t post on my daughters accident she has been through enough and I thank you northescambia for editing this and adding my daughters name to it after my husband specifically asked you not to !

    Glad to know she’s recovering.
Glad she was wearing her seatbelt.

Hard to believe she’s 16 already, why 4 years ago she was just 12.
Wait, I guess that makes sense.

David for not wrecking vehicles with Auburn tags on them

  13. Thank God on June 20th, 2013 8:21 am

@ MOM, thanks so much for the update! I will pray for total healing for your daughter. I am rejoicing with you that God protected her. Your post brought tears to my eyes because I am so thankful for divine intervention.

Speed kills please everyone slow down, thanks to god she will survive but and thanks to God she hit no one else. I travel that way at least twice a week, I refuse to allow other drivers to make me go faster than the posted speed limit, if there were a police Officer posted there or patrolling that area maybe some would slow down and drive according to conditions, I never see an officer , why so fast everyone, think about the jaws of Life having to cut you out of your car as onlookers pray for your survival, or worst yet killing someone else and possibly even yourself, or how would you like to loose your arm, leg, life? come on Peoples slow down, and God Bless!

  15. kim on June 20th, 2013 1:03 am

People fly down this road. Since they put the stop signs on the Bratt road side, it’s like a drag strip.

  16. Willene Bryan on June 19th, 2013 6:15 pm

    Praying for healing.

  18. MOM on June 19th, 2013 4:36 pm

This is my daughters car and I wanted to say thank you so much for any prayers and please keep them coming, my daughter is ok she has a closed head injury and a lot of lacerations and abrasions with bruising but she is very lucky to be alive her car went airborn after she slid off the wet road onto the side where she went into a very deep inbankment and went up and airborn and flipped twice ! My daughter is very blessed as we are for her to be alive this was nothing short of God lifting that car up in the air as if it would have stopped in the inbankment the impact alone would have killed her, I am thankful to our God he chose to let my daughter live and the inside of the drives roof caved in hitting her head she is very blessed !!! Just FYI she was NOT texting and driving and nobody else was in the vehicle with her she is an excellent driver and a very safe driver and did have her seatbelt on this was a accident and she is going through a LOT trying to deal with all that happened today again I thank everyone for there prayers as she will be needing them to recover a while . I love you sweet angel and I am just glad you are going to be ok! Cars come and go but there is only one you !!!! ❤

Prayers for the teen for a safe recovery, and for whoever’s poor car was totaled. Than God she was in a large sedan and not a little import!
