Gun Jams As Suspect Tries Twice To Shoot At Deputy

May 20, 2013

An Escambia County deputy is lucky to be alive following an incident this morning where a suspect tried — and failed — to fire a gun at him twice.

While on patrol in the 700 block of Truman Avenue, Deputy Michael Runge made contact with a suspicious person at the Oakwood Terrace Apartments. The suspect, later identified as 25-year old Ryan Lewis Toler, attempted to flee at which time Runge pursued him on foot.

Toler turned around and  aimed a 45-caliber semi-automatic pistol at  Runge and attempted to fire twice; however, the gun jammed both times. Toler was apprehended a short time later on Michael Street.  No shots were fired by deputies.

Toler was charged with first degree attempted homicide, possession of weapon by a convicted felon and resisting an officer with violence. He was booked into the Escambia County Jail with bond set at $1 million.

@Patriot,Your right Patriot, with the new pursuit policy in place no chase, even if it was Charlie Manson. It is going to get a lot worse before getting better.Look at the crime stats, then look at the neighboring counties we set between and how low their stats are,and this is only the 5th month of 2013 7 more to go,hope theirs enough sheep to go around to feed all these hungry wolves.

@ CLINT, I agree. I thank the lord for being with Deputy Runge that day. I hope he realizes how close he was to being planted 6 ft. under.

LEO’s make life or death choices in a fraction of a second. You can only hope that the choice was correct at the end. I have nothing but respect for this deputy and his profession. However, if that POS criminal had drew down on me, he would have been eating lead. If someone is willing to kill a cop, they will kill anyone.

BE SAFE OUT THERE LEO’s, YOU ARE IN MY PRAYERS. REMEMBER (1*)

    Henry,
Xpeecee’s complaint was that if convicted of trying to murder a law enforcement, he will not be killed under our system of justice. Surely you will agree it was not conservative justices who removed that option. Therefor blaming liberal justices isn’t totally unreasonable.

Personally, I wish the gentleman didn’t go around trying to murder people; but I doubt he cares what I want, just what he wants.

    David for fewer living killers
    and would-be killers

Did not know how to show sarcasm in my first post. Gentleman was not the word I wanted to use……but did not want to get something started right off the bat.

I think the Lord still has plans for Michael Runge! One cool headed deputy…we need more of these.

  6. wesley on May 21st, 2013 9:07 am

They will let him out again, and he will continue doing the same thing…when he kills someone, they will look back at his record and scratch there heads and say look at all The Red Flags…..Why is he still out in our community???

I bet that .45 was not a Colt.

When John Moses Browning demonstrated his .45 automatic to the war department back around 1910, it thundered through a 5000 round test firing without a single jam.

The Lord was certainly looking out for the officer.

    >>William, would like to know if this occurred in Escambia County Florida or Alabama?

Florida. Any of our stories that only say Escambia County area always Florida since that’s our primary coverage area. If it’s north of the state line, the story will notate Alabama.

Just google this man’s name and you will be amazed as all his arrest records. Why is he being let out of jail when they should be keeping him in and throwing away the key? He is not a asset to our community of any other community and neither is his motorcycle gang. Google also states that DBD stands for The Death Before Dishonour, gang. Never thought I’d see the day gangs such as this would set up in our part of the gulf coast.

Henry Coe…well said… a true voice of reason. Thank you!!

  12. Henry Coe on May 20th, 2013 9:37 pm

@xpeecee, He was charged with First Degree Attempted Homicide and the courts will convict and his Lawyer will dry to deal. It has nothing to do with anything in the political spectrum of Left vs Right.
Your smear toward Liberals, doesn’t make any sense and has absolutely no context to anything about this story.

  13. PSU1Earl on May 20th, 2013 9:37 pm

If he was trying to chamber a round by pulling the receiver back, it could jam without firing a shot…

  14. Patriot on May 20th, 2013 9:29 pm

The tattoo on his neck is not “DAD”. It’s “DBD”, which is a gang tattoo.

Good thing the dirtbag didn’t make it to a car, huh?

  15. William on May 20th, 2013 9:29 pm

    >>>A jam is usually after a shot.. I think misfire would be the right wording..

Jammed is the term used by the ECSO.

  16. paul on May 20th, 2013 9:20 pm

A jam is usually after a shot.. I think misfire would be the right wording..

  17. xpeecee on May 20th, 2013 8:52 pm

@ Working Man – I totally agree! Anyone who tries to shoot a deputy, deserves to be permanently removed from society. Liberals will save him and society will pay the price…… as usual.

  18. KRIZZZ on May 20th, 2013 7:36 pm

can you say DIRT BAGGGGG!!!!!! hopefully he will get what he deserves in jail!!!

  19. bill l on May 20th, 2013 6:39 pm

this was not luck but an act of God to have the gun jam, not sure why the suspect was not shot by the officer

  20. Oak Grove Bud on May 20th, 2013 6:36 pm

Well what do you know??? Possession of weapon (gun) by a convicted felon…..who would have thought this could be possible?? Wonder how much he knows about gun control? Thank the good Lord above this officer was not injured or killed. Working Man, you are CORRECT!!!! To all LEO’s out there, please be safe.

  21. susan on May 20th, 2013 6:20 pm

uh……bammagirl, this person isn’t a gentleman, this man is a criminal that needs to be put away for a very long time. That ’s what wrong with Escambia county now, its people like him.

  22. curious on May 20th, 2013 6:14 pm

please tell me that doesn’t say DAD on his neck!

  23. clint on May 20th, 2013 6:02 pm

Deputy missed a great opportunity to get rid of some trash..If trashes gun had’nt jammed we would be making comments on a dead deputy.

  24. Workin Man on May 20th, 2013 4:08 pm

@ big R. In a couple of years he’ll be living in government housing and on welfare shooting at under paid cops again!!!!!!

  25. big R on May 20th, 2013 3:54 pm

lets just hope the judge does not see fit to let this guy back out ever

  26. Mike on May 20th, 2013 3:22 pm

    @BammaGirl

I disagree with you calling this criminal a “gentleman.”

He is obviously very far from being a gentleman due to the fact that he ran, tried to kill a cop and is a convicted felon. This trash needs to be off the street and kudos to the law enforcement officers for following through and getting this guy behind bars.

  27. Ben Thar on May 20th, 2013 2:10 pm

Lucky he didn’t steal a better gun.

  28. BammaGirl on May 20th, 2013 2:09 pm

Mr. Toler is the one that is lucky to be alive not Officer Range. I bet that Officer Range’s gun would not have jammed if he had fired his!!!!

Officer Range, I am glad you are okay and also glad you did not feel the need to shoot this gentleman!!!
