FHP Seeks To Identify Pedestrian Hit By Vehicle On Nine Mile Road

May 6, 2013

The Florida Highway Patrol is seeking the public’s help in identifying a pedestrian that was hit by a vehicle and critically injured early Sunday morning on Nine Mile Road.

The accident happened about 5 a.m. on Nine Mile at North Palafox Street. The FHP said 19-year old Richard D. Mumma of Pensacola was traveling east on Nine Mile Road when the unidentified pedestrian failed to cross in a marked crosswalk or yield to traffic when crossing the road. The pedestrian was pushing a shopping cart full of aluminum cans when he stepped into the path of Mumma’s 2006 Honda.

The pedestrian was transported to Sacred Heart Hospital in critical condition. Mumma and his passenger, 18-year old Lyndon E. Parmer of Pensacola, were not injured.

Anyone with information on a possible name for the pedestrian is asked to call Trooper Villalonga with the Florida Highway Patrol at (850) 484-5000 ext. 313. The pedestrian was described as a black male, about 60-years old.

That sounds like Mr. Green to me. He has been walking that area since I was a kid. I hope that he is ok. Bless him!

I have lived in Ensley since 1985, I beleive his name is Mr. Green. When my kids were young we collected cans to celebrate Earth Day in recycling, we met him at the recycling business on Hwy. 29. He was a Ensley icon.

He has been pushing cans as long as I have lived here. He used to come by my house once a week and pick up the cans me and my roommates had saved for him. He walks all over Pensacola looking for cans and never asking for money. He is great guy and I hope he will be ok, and also I hope they find some family of his. Everyone in Pensacola has seen him before, I am sure of it. He always wore a winter beanie, a jacket, and long pants no matter how hot or cold. He always wore the same set up. Just last week he came by my shop on Palafox and I filled his entire shopping cart of soda cans saved up by the guys in the shop. He came over with only 3 cans in his cart, and when he left, he was having a hard time keeping them from falling out. He had a big smile on his face and was always so appreciative to get cans. I wish I knew his name. He was never one to talk much. Just thankful and always smiling.

Please if he has someone please clam him he is not gonna want anything from you but maybe a voice he had a hard time being understood sometimes.

This sounds like the same man that walks Chemstrand between Johnson and 9 Mile. People leave cans out by the road for him. I have seen him multiple times but never actually met him.

Him and an older white man both collect cans and hang out in the bank parking lot in front of Publix at 9 mile/Pine Forrest a lot. They should try to locate him, perhaps he knows the man’s full name and if he has family anywhere.

I’m praying for him! He’s a sweet wonderful man! The ECSO on hood drive knows who he is or at least where he stays!

There is a very thin older black male that collects cans all up and down Hwy 29 and on that end of 9 Mile. If it’s the same man, he never asks for anything and sells his cans at Reynolds Recycling. He usually has on a sweater of some sort even when it’s warm. Hopefully, if it’s him, he will be ok and the people at Reynolds will have some sort of ID records for him. I’ve given him a few dollars here and there and thanked him for picking up cans and trash along the roads.

I can’t get the phone to answer in order to get to that extension for 484-5000.

Any way, a man fitting that description was in the Walmart parking lot around 2:10 am on 5/5/2013 digging through the trash cans in the parking rows close to Hood Drive(on the grocery side).
The Security Guard that worked that night didn’t seemed worried about him or his shopping cart, so he might be known to security if they have ever questioned him in the past.
