Walnut Hill Homeowner Shoots Burglar

May 18, 2013

A burglar was shot by a homeowner Friday afternoon in Walnut Hill.

About 4 p.m., the resident of the 3900 block of Rockaway Creek Road reported a burglary in progress at his home. The Escambia County Sheriff’s Office said he arrived home to find two intruders inside of the residence.

The homeowner held the suspects at gunpoint while he called the Sheriff’s Office. As he was speaking with dispatchers, one of the suspects, identified at 33-year old Ricky Dewayne Taylor, lunged toward him. The homeowner fired a .38 caliber revolver, striking Taylor in the leg. Taylor  was alert and conscious when he was transferred to LifeFlight to be airlifted to Baptist Hospital in Pensacola. His injuries did not appear life threatening.

The female suspect, identified as 35-year old Teresa Dianne Sunday,  received a minor injury on her face from a ricochet; she was taken into custody at the scene by the Escambia County Sheriff’s Office.

Taylor and Sunday were charged with burglary of a residence and grand theft of a dwelling. Sunday was being held with bond set at $12,500 Saturday night in the Escambia County Jail, while Taylor remained hospitalized.

The homeowner was not injured, and no charges have been filed against him.

    Re: Cream
The victim is the one with the bullet wound? Really? Actually, that’s not exactly true. The homeowner is the victim! I grew up with my whole family being in Law Enforcement. Walking into another man’s home, especially when he/she isn’t home is not something we were “taught” NOT to do, it is something we all just KNEW better than to do. We were taught “locks don’t keep theives out, they let honest people know your not home.” And believe me, my family believed in SYG long before Fl passed the law.

Think b4 u speak. this is a one sided story. the victim is the guy with the bullet in his knee. we r none perfect god is the true judge, hypocrice and passing judgement on others are sins and the lord will judge u. thats far worse than a court

Teach you to break into someones home, now won’t it. Good for home owner, protect what it yours at any expense.

To the friends and family the of the perps who are in jail for BURGLARY: if you don’t want to be offended, turn your computer off; I am offended that YOUR friend or family memeber thought it necessary to break and enter into a house that was not theirs; I am offended you’re up her being offended; this would not be happening if YOUR friend or family got arrested for BURGLARY; TOUGH if you do not like what people say; they’d say much worse if it was not being moderated; you’re welcome!

I went to school with Teresa. She was a great person & her parents were wonderful loving people. They raised their kids in a loving home. She has 4 kids now that her mom helps raise. Sometimes good people make bad mistakes. She was doing better & sometimes all it takes is 1 person to bring you back down. Teresa has a great heart and I am unsure what she was thinking. I am sure it is more to this story because she lives on or near this road it happened at.

BZ homeowner for protecting what is yours. 2nd Amendment used properly.

  11. Castle Doctrine on May 20th, 2013 6:08 am

    RE:mnon
Because the burglar isn’t dead and got shot by the home owner, watch in a few months the home owner will get sued by the burglar for getting shot. I’ve seen it happen… and the burglar win. So in the end he will get your money even though he failed the first time getting your possessions.

That is actually incorrect. The Castle Doctrine (Not “Stand Your Ground”) protects homeowners from liability in situations like this. Not too long ago your statement would have been correct – dirtbags suing homeowners for injury while committing a crime at victims’ residence and winning suits! No longer the case.

can’t reseit! What were they (robbers) thinking of. People in the country have guns for a reason. and its not to say “hey I own a gun” “isn’t it pretty”. We live in the country and protect what we own. I am not going to shoot in the leg in the military they show to shoot center mass, growing up in the country we are taught to kill it. Just the way I feel!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  13. me on May 19th, 2013 1:48 pm

Its not right for anyone to talk about someones family. Yeah, that woman has made a few mistakes in her past, But that does not mean that her children are going to follow in her foot steps. Her whole family isnt like her im sure! I know her kids and they are not bad at all. People should be ashamed that they say things like this about other people.

Anyway look our household isnt trouble my grandma and my siblings are nice and good people come by our house and see yourself

    to bob hudsen,
yes your in the country, and there is a lot of target practicing, but remember with guns and practicing there comes responsibility. I had a neighbor who was shooting into a pond and when I told him the bullets were richocetting towards my house his said bullets don’t richocet off water. make sure you have a good back stop and are safe with your shooting. use NRA safety rules

This incident is a one way story. A residence was burglarized and the owner took action to protect his life, family and property. This is not a place for LIBERALS to find pity for the wicked minded…

Ammunition is getting too rare, and too expensive, for warning shots. Center mass!

  20. doofus on May 18th, 2013 8:36 pm

Lawsuit, shmawsuit. The homeowner was in danger, and he diffused the danger the right way. No one died and friends, that’s what matters. The burglars might come out of this with a new lease on life.. a wake up call if you will.

    Sadly, you may be right.

However, those who would approach my home with such ideas may be considered trespassers or thieves and could be dealt with as such.

florid stand your ground law should protect him from any legal action, by the state, or the potential burglar.

more and more, crime is moving north to the country, everyone be careful, keep back, front doors locked, and yours gun in easy reach if no children are around. and children should be taught strict gun safety from a young age..and not to touch them under the fear of DAD…

  23. Sam Jones on May 18th, 2013 7:01 pm

Response back to Fred..Iam not saying giving them hard labor..This is every day jobs for some people….that are making a living for them selves. What about the victims that are affected, because of there stupidity. Jails are over crowed because laws protect the criminals more than the victims. If they had to get out and work while they was in jail, when they get out they would do everything they can not to go back in. That’s way you have so many repeat offenders….its free room and board for them ….and most of all ! Its free…I get up every day and work ….They are no better than me….

  25. Bob Hudsun on May 18th, 2013 4:19 pm

Glad the home owner is safe, he did the right thing. now as far as his aim goes, that totally depends on how mad you make me while you have broken in to my home and now you lunge at me, to do me more harm, would not have blamed him if he had kill the dude, And I agree, life fight should have not be called out. And on another note, as Concerned Neighbor mention, when the Jerks from the city move out in to the country, they take on the roles of social enforcer’s, and they do call the law,but you are still going to shoot your guns, and they are going to complain, now, when they do that , you shoot more often, louder, and longer, tell them to kiss your hiny, and blast away, Make sure you tell them to go back from where ever they are from, because, this is how we do it in the south, and in the panhandle. Good practice makes for good aim.

  26. chris1 on May 18th, 2013 3:30 pm

In other words if you don’t act/shoot like your life is in grave danger,
shooting to wound ,opens up to a lawsuit.

  27. chris1 on May 18th, 2013 3:29 pm

Use hollow-points and 2 shots to body mass.
Depending on the statement by the homeowner , some lawyer could come after the homeowner.
    .

  28. fred on May 18th, 2013 2:09 pm

    @wesley
I heartily agree with you, and another benefit is that hopefully the inmates would be too tired to get into trouble and share criminal scheme ideas while in jail. BUT, the ACLU thinks that hard labor is cruel and unusual punishment – I kinda doubt those guys ever had anything like this happen to them, or they wouldn’t feel so sorry for the bad guys.

  29. Concerned Neighbor on May 18th, 2013 1:04 pm

Wise up people! They call people in North Escambia, Rednecks for a reason. I know someone that moved from Pensacola to Molino and gave her neighbor a hard time for shooting his gun. She called the police on him. The officer told her Mam ,you are going to have to get use to it. Everyone out here owns a gun. The young man lived next to his parents, brother, uncle and both grandparents. Our whole family lives in Barrineau Park. She never let off of him . Rather than have trouble he sold his place and moved his family closer to town. Fine young man that was raised in the country. Of all people that I would want to be my neighbor ,he would be one. I want a gun with the little red light on it so the dude will know where the bullet in going to hit and where he will be hurting and it will not be above the waist. You can replace things but not your love ones.

  30. to the family of the crook on May 18th, 2013 12:40 pm

please know that most people do not think the family of the crook is bad. just because your daughter chose a life of crime doesn’t reflect on you at this time. once a child is grown, they make their own choices. somehow i feel if the mom/grandmom hadn’t been there, the children could have been dragged around with them. so good for grandma for being there for the kids!

  31. glad it worked out on May 18th, 2013 12:36 pm

Well, I for one am happy about the man with the gun. Maybe it will show some of these crooks they better be careful. If more people did this, or let it be known they will, it would deter some of these crooks. So many will “spot and steal” later, so you have to be careful of friends who bring people you don’t know to your home. I don’t let anyone but family and a few very close friends into my home. My place was broken into a year ago. They took all kinds of stuff including some things that didn’t even belong to me, but was my son’s friend’s guitar handed down to him by his uncle who died. Now that can never be replaced. We called the sheriff because they left some of the property in the yard. They didn’t even fingerprint the stuff. I feel if they had, they would have caught them. Now, I have a gun, camera’s set up all over, and will protect what ever I have that I have worked so hard for. So, to the homeowner…congratulations for doing the right thing!

Probably looking for drugs/money or something to sell to get drug money. Sad that ppl. get addicted & it seems there is no way out. That is no excuse however & if you commit a crime you should have to pay the consequences. What’s more sad is that the family of the addicted person(s) suffers too. Thankful the homeowner was able to protect his home & family & they were not hurt. Prayers for the victims as well as the criminals. Drugs are an awful vice where no one wins. If you or someone you know is addicted please have them contact the Waterfront Mission……they have a wonderful program. They do not play around though. The person has to be willing to do just as the program requires. They also need to have an advocate as well as that advocate or someone needs to be in charge of them completely. So if they are not willing to give control over to someone to make all decisions for them, then they might as well not waste their time applying.

  34. wesley on May 18th, 2013 9:53 am

I think if you go to jail, you should spent time working your sentence doing community work. Put them working in that area, painting, cutting grass, picking up trash, sweeping sidewalks, pulling up weeds….do this and repeat offenders ,will stop…and they will contribute something in there community ,instead of criminal activities….Give this one year trial….and you will see jail over crowding no problem.,ever again…just saying setting in jail we are paying for there up keep, lets get something good….from it????

I hate the homeowner had to be put in the position to shoot someone, but he made the right decision. We are all tired of being afraid to wave or smile or frown without someone thinking it means some else. Lets go back to the basics. If you smile it means your happy. Bad is not good, its bad, and if you do bad things you may be shot. I am in the country and I own a gun. I will also use it, so don’t put me in that position.

  42. kathy on May 18th, 2013 7:36 am

This is what our world is coming to, If someone wants what you have they will make every atempt to get it , Thes p eople need to get a job and stop robbing homeowners. I truely believe every home owner needs a gun to protect what they have , and there homes. That will give people a second thought about breaking in on others.I think these two got off lucky Because they could have been killed, I believe there is a law that if you feel your life is in danger, you can shoot to kill on your property.
