$1.5 Million Replacement Of Highway 97A Bridge Begins Next Week

May 1, 2013

The Florida Department of Transportation will begin replacement of a bridge on Highway 97A over Boggy Creek in theĀ  Bay Springs community the week of May 6. Crews are setting up work zone signage this week.

Weather permitting the $1.5 million project should take about eight months to complete. During construction, an on-site diversion will be built for local residents to continue to have access to the area.

The 121 foot bridge was constructed in 1969 and is supported on wooden timbers. The bridge is rated as “structurally deficient” and has a current weight limit of 15 tons. The bridge is located about one mile west of South Highway 99.

The speed limit will be reduced to 30 mph through the work zone. FDOT is advising motorists to use caution when traveling through the work area and to be aware that speeding violations will be doubled when workers are present.

*an on-site diversion will be built for local residents to continue to have access to the area* Hope they make an effort to enforce the “LOCAL” residents part! That would give the truly local residents 8 months of Peace & Quiet from the constant round the clock traffic of Night Hunters, Hot Rodders, Beer Drinking- Just Outside of Local people who believe “Runnin’ the Roads” between Enon & Bay Springs is like going to Disneyland!

Thank you for giving the local folks a temporary access,I don’t care how long it takes
to build a good bridge. That bridge has been a headache for years.
    Thanks Ronnie

    >>>Can someone explain why it takes 8 months and 1.5 million dollars to build a two lane 150 foot bridge over a creek when the I-10 bridge over Escambia Bay only took one year and 26 million dollars for bridge that has six lanes, four emergency lanes, and is 3 miles long?

It was $26.4 million to open two lanes of the bridge temporarily after Ivan by replacing a few spans. It was $245 million to replace the whole thing.

I was wondering if they were going to provide a go around for us. For me, its about 20 extra miles, each way, when they close the bridge. Thanks for letting us know.
