Two Injured In Hwy 95A Wreck That Trapped Driver

April 11, 2013

Two people were seriously injured in Wednesday night accident that left a man trapped in his vehicle for an extended period of time.

The accident happened about 9:10 p.m. on Highway 95A near Quintette Road. The Florida Highway Patrol said 52-year old Rex Hassell of Evergreen, AL, was northbound on Highway 95A in a 2005 Ford F150 when he attempted to pass another vehicle in a curve. James Tipton, 32, of Cantonment, swerved to onto the shoulder in an attempt to avoid a collision, but Hassell also swerved, causing the front of his pickup to collide with the side of Tipton’s truck on the shoulder.

Tipton was trapped for over 20 minutes as firefighters used the Jaws of Life to free him. He was transported by ambulance to Sacred Heart Hospital in critical condition. His passenger, 8-year old Jamie Tipton of Cantonment, was taken to Sacred Heart with minor injuries.

Charges against pending in the crash, according to FHP.

The Cantonment, Molino and Ensley stations of Escambia Fire Rescue, Escambia County EMS and the Escambia County Sheriff’s Office also responded to the crash.

Emilee is so right, we speed thru life way to fast. If everyone would slow down and take the time to as the saying goes to smell the roses, we would all be alot better off. I do not know James, but I do know the Aunts and Uncles and the Mother and my thoughts and Prayers are with you. People put the cell phone down, start stopping at the yellow light, not the red. we need to start showing some respect to each other……..next time it could be me or you……………….

Also you do not accidently pass on a curve. That was no mistake, I have made mistakes and I have probably acted stupid a few times in my life that doesn’t excuse me so you could say maybe he acted very stupidly instead of very selfish, but it was by no means an accident passing in a curve.

  8. curious on April 12th, 2013 4:36 pm

Sheila I understand yall wanting to take up for him but you were not in the truck either am I correct? Maybe you should also keep your comments to your self, because there was witnesses right? Are you trying to say that along with them and the fhp is also lying, wow your man must be 1 of a kind to be believed over all others.

  9. Sheila on April 12th, 2013 4:12 pm

First of all my prayers go out to the Tipton family. But you all don’t understand that yes it happened at the curve but theFHP don’t tell the whole story about how it ended up being on the curve and one thing dont tell my daughter to keep her comments to herself I keep yours to yourself because none of you no what happened you weren’t there either. Until you know exactly what caused this don’t throw stones At Rex . Yes he feels bad enough and like I said I know what happened and so does Haley , Rex is not selfish and it was an accident. If anyone of you have never accidentally did something they can throw stones but not one of you have never accidentally did something that they didn’t mean to doSo leave him alone and continue prayers for Mr Tipton

I have lived up the road from this curve for less than six months and have seen several wrecks with my own eyes. I went to school with James. My prayers go out to him and his family.

we all know what happens and im tellin u this james is my family and so is jaimie and all these comments yall are saying james was awake and told about what happened and he tried to avoid him and it was to late rex came onto his lane ….so on .. but if it wasnt for him thinking of his daughter and not have jumped on her and shielded her it would have been alot worse…he is still in very critical shape after going through 2 surgereis…very bad ones…and was not his fault at all… i love you all and praying hard for his successful recovery and healing…i love yall all,….

    >>Article says he lives in Alabama, but actually lives up the road from accident.

His address was listed as Alabama by the FHP, presumably because that’s his legal address in the DMV computers.

  13. david Lamb on April 12th, 2013 12:11 pm

I am one of Jamies uncles. My sister is his mother. It will be a long time before James brings in a paycheck, if he ever does again. He was pretty badly injured. He has a long, slow recovery. I want to lash out at the cause, but best to leave it alone for now.
Hope Mr Rex has good insurance, Article says he lives in Alabama, but actually lives up the road from accident. I pray that James friends will come to his aid and help the family in their long struggle back to some kind of normalcy!

  14. Emilee on April 12th, 2013 10:11 am

Hi everyone, This is James’ sister Emilee. I am writing as our family wishes to thank everyone for the outpouring of prayers, love and support from our community and our friends and family. It truly has been felt in our hearts and has lifted us all up. We know that God is the ultimate healer and physician and James is in great care under his hands. But there is still a long road ahead for James and all of us as we help piece his life back together and help him to recover and restore his body physically as well as spiritually/emotionally we can’t even know the full extent this event has taken on him or all of us. Again we thank everyone from the bottom of our hearts for their continued support and prayers, we can’t say that enough, we are blessed to have a community that pulls out all the stops to support their fellow neighbors and friends.

This incident has affected James first and foremost and has changed his life forever. He will never be the James he was at 9:09 PM. But I know he is a fighter and he WILL get through this, step by step, day by day, moment by moment, as we all will. But this has impacted our entire family as well, we have all been changed on this day. His wife and 6 children, his Mom, Dad and his two sisters and countless other family and friends have all been impacted by this. As well as our community who has witnessed these harrowing traffic incidents over and over again through the years.

So we ask that we all take a moment to reflect on our lives and how every move we make has the potential to affect someone else whether for good or bad. What choice will you make today? Driving impatiently, texting and driving, drinking and driving, acting a fool on the road trying to impress your buddies, backing your trailer into the road without taking enough time to truly investigate, not stopping for 10 seconds at the stop sign, running that yellow/red light? Is that 30 seconds of time you save getting home early after swerving and passing other people or running that light worth it? Is that text message THAT important? Is that extra beer or your pride/dignity in calling a cab or your mom to pick you up at the bar really worth it? Is my brother’s life worth it? Maybe today we will all slow down and be more cautious and aware that you are driving in a loaded weapon and that every move you make has the potential to cause a chain reaction that can never be taken back. These things happen in an INSTANT! Are your children and their carseats properly restrained? Are you wearing your seat belt? Are the steps you are taking right now going to impact your life and the life of others positively or negatively? Stop and think for a moment before reacting or responding. Those 5 or 30 seconds could mean a life, yours or theirs and could cause a ripple of effects that affect more than you know. Please take a few seconds and STOP, THINK!

Again, thank you all for your continued support. James is still in ICU and sedated and being monitored he is not critical but he still has a lot to overcome, he has had multiple surgeries to correct his injuries and so far everything is looking as positive as it can be at this time but he’s not out of the woods yet. He will need continued prayers and positive support and energy sent his way through the days and weeks ahead. His daughter Jamie Lynn is doing well and recovering with only very minor injuries, she’s a little trooper, his little shadow and mini-me.

See he is not the only one who has to deal with this, his wife will be dealing with this and worrying when they’re bills come due or when she buys food when she’s traveling back & forth to hospital & Dr appts. or when they have to get another vehicle or shuffling their kids around to be with him hopefully their families will help her by keeping their kids unless they work. I could go on & on, futhermore she could have a predicament like I had 1 x & my nil too me pretty much I could go when she could keep them she was gonna do what she wanted first let’s just say gladly I had family because when she did call I already had made arrangements for them to be shuffled here & there

Curious old friend there we’re eyewitnesses as well as physical proof at the crash scene that prove Rex was at fault. Dee I’m sure he does feel bad and will have to deal with it but at least he’s not in the hospital. But yes prayers for both families for sure.

  25. Darla McCartney on April 11th, 2013 4:02 pm

The Tipton family has been our good friends for many years and all I can say is God has this family in his hands. Sonya we are here for you and we love you. He and Rob will be back fishing before you know it.

  26. kh on April 11th, 2013 3:57 pm

we live right off of HWY 95a and I can tell you there have been many many “accidents” on this road. We moved here in in 1976 and at least 12 people have been killed between Chipper Rd. and Cottage Hill since then. I can’t speculate on how many have been seriously injured. What can be said is that we hear sirens more lately than in the past. My husband and I are getting older and we try to drive the speed limit (45) and almost always 2 or 3 cars or worse yet (paperwood trucks or big rigs that are trying to avoid DOT on Hwy 29) are either tailgating us or passing us like we are parked in the road. One has to wonder where in the world is everyone going in such a hurry. Further, I would like to address the children that may be in the cars. FROM THE BACK OF A VEHICLE NO ONE CAN SEE THE CARSEAT that the baby is in. Please people have a little respect for one another or just quit driving and putting everyone on the road in danger. I am not trying to throw stones or place blame for this incident (that is up to the FHP) We do not know James well but one of my kids went to school with him and we wish him a speedy recovery and also the other driver.

  27. dee on April 11th, 2013 3:37 pm

this was a bad decision, which im sure Rex is sorry.he is the one that has to deal with this.so why just jump out there with your comments.Pray for him and the Tipen family

  29. Old Friend on April 11th, 2013 1:51 pm

um just curious because there are a lot of accusations going around! Were any of you in the vehicle with him? and as far as FHP knowing what happened without being told, not at all true i was in a wreck and they were going to charge me with it, the other driver had to tell them it was his fault so before you throw opinions and accusations out there, find out the facts. Thanks

  30. Dana on April 11th, 2013 1:29 pm

Haley, people are commenting off the FHP report. Not your fathers personality. But to pass anyone on that road, whether its on a curve or you just plain cant see traffic coming is selfish. If it comes back that the FHP report is incorrect I will be the first to apologize. The young father he hit is going into another surgery soon. Please pray for peace for your father, but focus some of your anger towards the family that will be struggling with more then just guilt in the near future.

  31. Tracy on April 11th, 2013 12:53 pm

I do not think Haley is being disrespectful – she is just stating her opinion like everyone else!

The charges are still pending, so maybe the FHP is still looking into exactly what happened.

  38. Deborah Carmichael on April 11th, 2013 11:05 am

  39. curious on April 11th, 2013 10:35 am

Haley honey, I’m not being ugly in no way but if you were not in the vehicle I’d be quiet, because people can read, & fhp’s do investigations& they can pretty much tell what happened without being told, I know you probably think your dad can do no wrong, in a perfect world they can’t, but its not, no body is perfect not even my dad, and yes he makes mistakes, but we still love them, now if I was one of your parents you’d be getting a lesson on being disrespectful no matter how old you are, so take my advice & let it go because in the end you might have to eat crow & its not very good.

  41. Reader Fan on April 11th, 2013 10:01 am

So Haley, you don’t think it was wrong for your father to pass in curve? We do know what happened…we can read what the FHP said. Are you saying the FHP lied?

  42. Jodie on April 11th, 2013 9:55 am

I’m glad that all parties were ok.

But my first question is WHY was he passing on a curve….it’s illegal (check your driving manual)

Second….. Why is this road always having this problem? No matter what time of day, night, or weather. There is ALWAYS someone on this road that is passing on the curve.

LET’S START DRIVING LIKE WE WANT TO LIVE. DRIVE SMART AND BE OBEY THE LAW. THE LIFE YOU SAVE MAY BE YOUR OWN.

  43. Haley on April 11th, 2013 9:46 am

My father was not being selfish by any means or trying to pass on a curve until you know what exactly happened keep your comments to yourself!

  44. Mike on April 11th, 2013 9:45 am

Endangering the life of a child due to impatience is difficult to understand. Tailgating (following too close) and dangerous passing should not be tolerated at all, but when children are present, we should be extra careful. Sometimes it’s hard to see that there are children in the vehicle in front of you. But when you do, please put a clamp on your impatience and drive safely. When my children are in the car with me, I’m always watching other drivers in front and behind. If you are being tailgated by a vehicle that already has front-end body damage, then the driver obviously has not learned a lesson. The best action in that case is to get out of their way, even if you have to pull off the road for a minute.

  51. dana on April 11th, 2013 8:25 am

Im the first person to defend the accidents happen theory. The we all make bad choices that unintentionally hurt others. But to me this is no accident, this was someone being selfish. To try and pass on a curve…….on that road, is just plain stupid and selfish.
