Bill Nelson Changes Position On Gay Marriage

April 8, 2013

U.S. Sen. Bill Nelson is changing his position on gay marriage. Nelson said last month that he didn’t favor marriage for gay couples, but on Thursday he sent out a statement changing his position.

Nelson said he believes in the constitutional protection of unalienable rights for all.

“The civil rights and responsibilities for one must pertain to all,” Nelson wrote in a piece he sent to the Tampa Bay Times. “If we are endowed by our Creator with rights, then why shouldn’t those be attainable by gays and lesbians?” Nelson wrote.

“Simply put, if the Lord made homosexuals as well as heterosexuals, why should I discriminate against their civil marriage? I shouldn’t, and I won’t. So I will add my name to the petition of senators asking the Supreme Court to declare the law that prohibits gay marriage unconstitutional.”

Nelson had been one of only a handful of Democrats in the Senate who had opposed gay marriage.

    James,
Polygamy and age of consent are both religious concepts as are the others listed. Maybe you and Senator Nelson don’t agree they are but history says they are.

The goals stated can all be achieved under contract law but insisting on a particular name shows a desire for greater social and religious acceptance by legal decree. It might even work; people have come to accept even murder by declaring it legal.

David Green, I just accept we have opposite views on this issue. But some people do use ridiculous scare tactics to say why they don’t believe in marriage equality. Outside of religious beliefs that justify the opposition.

    CONSIDERING:
“I think it is just a way to frighten people that gays and lesbians will want to marry animals and trees because these objects will be given legal standing.”

No, no, no. The duke didn’t say anything about those wishing to do such things being gay or lesbian. He just pointed out the same reasoning would apply to those as well. I’m reasonably certain those in jail for such violations would prefer to be free. I remember NAMBLA wanted to be included.

    David for logical extrapolation

  4. James Broel on April 11th, 2013 8:15 am

Duke of Wabeek, I believe these other groups you mention haven’t been pushing for marriage equality. Gay men and lesbian women are requesting legal recognition of their living arrangements in the eyes of the law. You shouldn’t compare this request to something totally different. I think it is just a way to frighten people that gays and lesbians will want to marry animals and trees because these objects will be given legal standing.

  5. Duke of Wawbeek on April 11th, 2013 1:30 am

If we are going to recongnize the rights of gay people, what about the other groups seeking freedom for sexual gratification. When do they get to step into the sunshine?

As Senator Nelson so graciously pointed out, did God not create perderast, necrophiliacs, beastialist ect. What about their right to be recongnized? Are they no less in God’s eyes?

  6. David Huie Green on April 10th, 2013 6:27 am

    Up to you.

You’re a free moral agent. You decide how to act, what you do. All are sinners, all are tempted by one thing or another. Either ultimately you pay the penalty for your sins or Christ does. No single sin condemns you worse than some other sin even though most think THEIR sin isn’t as bad as the other person’s sin. Of course, until they realize otherwise, they are still lost in their sins.

    David off subject of law

Hey you were right. I read it and found that ” The wages of SIN is death” so go ahead and sin I guess ??

  8. David Huie Green on April 9th, 2013 1:18 pm

    REGARDING:
“the Creator never gave anybody the right to sin.”

    Sure He did.

    There are just consequences.
HE even paid the penalty for those consequences if any will repent and trust him.

Yes, God does give everyone FREE choice; HE also gave us rules to live by, if you’re in doubt, just read the BIBLE. No matter the vote, when the time comes, we’re all going to be judged (whatever man may say), God is the ultimate decision maker. I go along with HIS word. Our society has really gone to the DOGS. Our country was founded on CHRISTIAN principals, but the leaders of our country have gone the opposite way so long, I’M just surprised GOD hasn’t destroyed the U.S.A. There has always been unbelievers, those wanting to go the opposite of what the BIBLE says. What ever happen to the morals the older folks were taught when young, there are very few who believe in morals or even our LORD & SAVIOR. It’s a SAD SAD WORLD that we live in!

  10. Don on April 8th, 2013 9:01 pm

    Facts are not Judgement.
Some of you don’t know the God of the Bible.
Please read it for yourself, the answer can be found in Romans chapter 1. God is NOT and never will BE for homosexuality no matter how you try and twist the truth.
As for Bill, the Creator never gave anybody the right to sin.

  12. James Broel on April 8th, 2013 7:24 pm

Bigbill1961, I agree it’s his chance to show that he’s different than others that don’t believe in equal rights for all. He’s got my vote next term!! Not all of us follow the same paths in life…

  13. bigbill1961 on April 8th, 2013 5:42 pm

It is not my place to judge Mr. Nelson. The undeniable fact is that God WILL judge him. My humble opinion regarding his position change is that it is not a personal position, but rather a political one. In other words, a ploy to get future votes.

  14. Mickey Cee on April 8th, 2013 5:41 pm

I wonder what happened during the last week to make him change his belief on Gay Marriage? Do you think his office was overworked answering phones and emails? So much for his “beliefs”!

  15. James Broel on April 8th, 2013 4:26 pm

I am glad to know gays and lesbians have a friend in Bill Nelson. It’s tough to be gay as it is but I’m glad there are others who support equal protection under the law. The tide is changing…

You are right Dan. In lockstep with Obama.
I have never voted for this Liberal Joke. Although a Bad joke. I have never voted for a liberal and never will.
We have a few more in northwest Fla that vote the popular way when they know their vote won’t matter anyway. A they just change directions in midstream to get re elected. Most of our senators who say they are conservative are not. Mccain among them.

It’s always nice to hear a politician support those parts of the Constitution that he agrees with.

  18. No Excuses on April 8th, 2013 3:42 pm

    @ Sue Ellen,

I do care – and I’d like for you to quote the scripture that says what you say about judging others since you judged me as well. Also, tell the other readers the context in which that scripture was used. I just want to see if I understand exactly what you mean by that.

I stated that Bill Nelson did not have the intestinal fortitude to stick to one stand on something. He has demonstrated that very clearly. I am not judging, merely stating the facts.

  19. Tired of watching our society decay on April 8th, 2013 3:03 pm

    To quote Mr. Nelson:
“Simply put, if the Lord made homosexuals as well as heterosexuals, why should I discriminate against their civil marriage?”

I guess Mr. Nelson thinks the Lord made thieves and rapists and child predators and murderers, too. Well, He made people. He would be right there. BUT He did not make people turn into thieves and rapists and child predators and murderers. As David Green indicated in his post, should we throw out all the laws because they don’t allow everyone to do anything they want?? We all have a choice to make of how we live our lives. We can go the way that our Creator set out for us to go, or we can turn our backs on God. Just remember, God will have the ultimate choice in the end as to where our soul will go.

  20. Jeff on April 8th, 2013 1:40 pm

Nelson has always been an abomination to everything decent and good.

@ Adam and Eve- Here’s some more for you. Lev 11:10 Lev19:27 Lev 19:19
    Exodus 21:7
    Exodus 35:2
All are abominations. You can’t cherry pick which ones you go by.

Right in lock step with Obama.

  24. Sue Ellen on April 8th, 2013 11:08 am

    What do you people CARE?

1-You’d hate Bill Nelson if he stood on a street corner and gave out $100 bills because he has that dreaded, evil “D” by his name.

2-It’s really NONE OF YOUR business who somebody loves and wants to spend their lives with…

3-If gay marriage is approved by the Supreme Court, nobody’s going to force you into one.

Oh, and while you’re using Scripture (out of context) to back up your opinions, find the passage that says “Judge not, lest ye be judged.”

  25. EMD on April 8th, 2013 10:27 am

A wrong is NOT a right. And, now you have blasphemed God. He did NOT make anyone a homosexual. It is of the sins of the fathers passed down a few generations. God can deliver anyone IF they believe and turn to Him. There is in all of us a bent towards evil. THAT is why Jesus died….to deliver us from that. To me, this is like spitting in His Face.

“If we are endowed by our Creator with rights, then why shouldn’t those be attainable by gays and lesbians?” Nelson wrote.

IF, Mr. Nelson believes in a Creator, HE SHOULD ALSO KNOW, THAT CREATOR, IS ALSO HIS JUDGE!

    GOD HAVE MERCY ON AMERICA!

I will not vote for Bill Nelson.

  28. No Excuses on April 8th, 2013 9:34 am

  29. Walnut Hill Roy on April 8th, 2013 7:49 am

Well said Yeah Right, it appears that you know the political game also.

Bill Nelson is a fool and needs to be replaced, his stand on the Second Amendment shows that he has never even read the Federalist Papers. A free thinker he is not, he merely asks those in charge of his party what he should think and say.

  30. Adam and Eve. NOT, Adam and Steve! on April 8th, 2013 7:48 am

So I will add my name to the petition of senators asking the Supreme Court to declare the law that prohibits gay marriage unconstitutional.”
This change is bought and paid for or threatened by this administration. You do not spend your entire 70 plus years of life believing marriage is one man and one woman, then all of a sudden change your mind.

  32. whodat on April 8th, 2013 7:10 am

Just like the rest of the Democrat fish. Changing direction in midstream

  33. David Huie Green on April 8th, 2013 6:50 am

Who does he want to marry?

Really, though, shouldn’t we also declare unconstitutional laws requiring a marriage license, setting minimum ages for marriage, limiting marriages to just two humans of whatever gender? Let’s go ahead and get it over with.

    David contemplating logical extrapolations
    in my usual nonjudgmental manner

  34. Charles on April 8th, 2013 5:48 am

Very Pleased to hear Sen. Nelson is also in support of the US Citizen’s protection and unalienable rights to an unrestricted and unmodified Second Amendment to the Constitution.
Thank you, Senator, for supporting the People’s Rights to Bear Arms…..oh, and our right to have a plentiful supply of ammunition for hunting and sporting too.
