Hospital Employee Named A ‘Legend’

March 16, 2013

An Atmore Community Hospital employee has been named a Baptist Health Care Legend, the organization’s highest honor.

When a recurring transfusion patient returned to live in the more rural area of Atmore, he was no longer able to drive. He lives alone with no family members nearby. Often, he paid for the services of public transportation to bring him to the hospital for blood draws and transfusions.

Patrice Smith noticed that the man needed a helping hand, so she offered to help. She used her own resources to make sure he made it to his health care appointments.

Recently, he was admitted to another facility for a temporary rehabilitation, and on her day off, Patrice drove him from the hospital to the facility. She also helped him complete admission paperwork. She checked on him often and visited him during his stay.

Patrice’s kindness didn’t stop there. She recognized that he could benefit from the Meals on Wheels program and contacted the program coordinators to expedite the enrollment process.

Patrice continues to check on the patient often and drives him to his physician appointments and other places where he needs to go

Atmores hospital and staff don’t always get the credit they deserve. They have always taken exceptional care of both myself and my family. Atmore has its share of problems but the hospital/staff is not one of them! Congrats

This does my heart so much good. Most people are just concerned with themselves today – they don’t want to get involved – they’re afraid they might miss a favorite tv program or they won’t have as much money to buy booze or gamble with. (or other things)

God bless you, Patrice. God has a mansion waiting for you.

Thanks for covering a story like this, and thanks for people like Patricia. If we all looked out for others, the world would not be in the condition it is in. Thanks Patricia!

“The King will reply, ‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.’

    God Bless you Patrice Smith

I just want to thank this lady from the bottom of my heart. I am not related to the patient, nor do I know the nurse. But as a nurse myself, but I had to get out the field of nursing because it took me emotionally down if something happened to my patients. But that is getting off the subject. I wish there was more nurses like this one that love their job and not there to get a paycheck. This nurse has went beyond her need and I know that his family and himself are very thankful and very glad that she is one of the nurses that have a heart and care for their patients. Thank you Miss. Smith for the great job that you do for others. And just know that god will give u something in return when u least except it. Thank you for this man’s Angel ( that is you Miss Smith) because I know that is how he feels.
