Escambia Special Olympics Held At Tate (With Gallery)

March 2, 2013

The track and field portion of the Escambia County Specials Olympics was held Friday at Tate High School.

Hundreds of athletes from over a dozen schools took part in Friday’s event. Hundreds of Tate High students also took part,  running events and serving as volunteer “buddies” for the athletes.

The day included track and field events, softball and tennis ball tosses, and other competitive events — plus fun events like fishing games, a petting zoo, face painting and more.

As a teacher, it did my heart good when one of my students’ buddies thanked me for allowing her to spend the time with one of my students. I love it when others see that the special needs students have something to offer them, too!

All the folks at Tate deserve a commendation for a great time was had by all!

I am one of the Adapted PE teachers for Escambia and would like to say THANK YOU to Tate High School and all the volunteers! I have had nothing but positive feedback from my students today after asking them about their time at the event. We all looked forward to this all year and it was a lot of fun for everyone. Great Job!

I would like to thank Tate High School for the great job that they did with these games. I’ve been the Coordinator for these games for the school district for the past 10 years, and Tate has far exceeded my expectations in their school support and assistance with these games. These games are staying at Tate for as long as I’m Coordinator. Unfortunately, we had to drop the name Special Olympics from these games.

My daughter was a “buddy” at the event yesterday and said it was one of the most best days she had ever had. She is so happy she was a volunteer and wants to do it again.
