Escambia Man Arrested In Fatal Chemstrand Road Stabbing

March 14, 2013

An Escambia County man is behind bars  charged with a fatal stabbing last night.

Just after 8 p.m. Wednesday, the Escambia County Sheriff’s Office responded to a disturbance in the 8000 block of Chemstrand Road, just south of Nine Mile Road. Deputies said 58-year old Leonard A. Brown was in an altercation with 43-year old John James Turberville.

Turberville was stabbed twice during the altercation and transported to an area hospital were he was pronounced deceased.

Brown was arrested at the scene and charged with manslaughter with a weapon and use of a weapon during a felony. He is being held without bond in the Escambia County Jail.

Escambia County Sheriff David Morgan said Thursday morning that investigators do not believe the homicide was drug related.

Tuberville was in front of his home, having gone out to check his mail, as Brown was walking down the street when the altercation began for unknown reasons.  Morgan said Tuberville was able to identify Brown has his assailant.

Julie & family. I am so sorry about John. A beautiful life cute short too soon. I’ll always remember all of you living behind me on Caswell and the times I spent with your Mom & Dad in Dogwood Park.

I have wonderful memories of growing up with John. I believe he was 6 and I was 8 when we moved into Dogwood Park. We were like brothers growing up. We went everywhere together on bikes, go carts and his motorcycle. When we were little we would go fishing down in Saint Regis at a little bridge. He had a toy fishin rod and I had a real one and he caught the biggiest Bull Blue Gill that day. We would sit on top of his barn at night in the summertime and watch the heat lightening out in the distance. There was no place I remember going that John wasn’t by my side. I remember his family had a pool put in and Julie his sister would act like she was drowning and John would rescue her. Funny all the things you remember. John was the guy that would do anything for anybody. Me and his Daddy Bill went camping together many times. John and I got a little rowdy on weekends but we kept each other in check. John I will always miss your friendship and your great smile and fun loving laughter always. You will be missed but I know you and I will see each other in heaven again. I love and miss you MY FRIEND! God Bless.

I don’t mean to be insensitive to his family by focusing on if he was the same person I knew in elementary school. He was a great person when I knew him then and I know he didn’t change. My deepest sympathy to his parents and wife and children.

John was my first boyfriend and such a big part of my childhood. My heart is broken for his family. Every memory I have of John is a positive one. I can still see his smile and here his laugh. May you rest in peace my friend.

I am so sorry for your loss. The neighborhood on Chemstrand/Ensley is not what it used to be, I’m sorry to say. There are all kinds of people that walk up and down the street. Some good and some bad.

To your previous questions, yes is was from Dogwood Park. I pray for strength for his family and friends and I know God will wrap his loving hands around all those who need comfort. He has served his purpose here on Earth; now he gets to enjoy a different kind of peace.

I am so sorry to hear about your cousin loss. I hope she understands I’m not being cruel or rude just realize that he is in a better place and that our God needed him more than his family did. At least they got the killer and don’t have to prolong this tragic any longer. Mercedes and Will I will keep all of y’all in my prayers. I am so glad that my Lil Bill introduce me to y’all. I love all of your family.
