Gas was $ 1.87 when Bush left office alright, But that’s because it was $ 4.05 and the economy crashed and the price of gas plummeted to well below $ 2.00.!!! People around here of short memories….Gas prices are being manipulated by oil companies and stock investors to make huge profits off the backs of working people who have no choice, except to pay what ever the price is !! Gas jumps $.15 cents overnight and people whine about .04 cents for public transportation ?

No matter who’s to blame, we’re the ones that are screwed. Just have to try and use a little gasoline as possible. I know I’m dating myself, but man, I miss the days where going into a gas station and pumping $3 to $5 of gas was common!

    REGARDING:
“If they aren’t a monopoly then how can prices go up when we have an overabundance of gas and are having to sell it to foreign countries.”

More than one person can — by definition — NOT be a monopoly. Tens of thousands of people are also NOT a monopoly and the oil industry is owned by tens of thousands. For example, all the various national petroleum monopolies of OPEC put together provide around 40-44% of world production and dropping (and they cheat each other on production limits). Actually, it’s probably owned by millions since most retirement funds include stock in energy companies. You probably own part of several oil companies. (I know Florida owns a large amount of stock in BP for example.)

As to why anyone ever sells anything, they do it because the one paying is willing to pay and the one selling desires the money they are willing to pay.

As to selling to other nations, we import petroleum, refine it and our domestic production into its components and sell those components. It is a shame that lots of people are moving out of dirt floored shacks around the world and are willing to pay for things we want to keep for ourselves like running water, electricity, mechanical transportation (versus foot transportation) but that’s life.

We DO have an abundance of natural gas and it IS cheaper than gasoline or diesel so those who wish are free to convert.

Bill just who are these billionaires and speculators you speak of? It is just your
paranoid speculation that there is this vast cabal of international financiers who
reap the profits of this world at the expense of its populace. I would not be surprised one bit if you believe the Kennedy assassination was a conspiracy.

  6. kb on February 28th, 2013 4:10 pm

just got back from the west coast. Gas is over $4 a gallon there.

  7. bill on February 28th, 2013 3:09 pm

Gas might have been $1.87 when Bush, Jr. came into office but after he invaded Iraq the price doubled and it never came back down to that price again. Now they just put out a rumor that we might bomb Iran and the speculators drive the price of oil back up and reap billions in unjustified profits.

it was 3.87 at the quick stop “bubbas” @ the 4 way stop over in berrydale :/

  9. Some Lady on February 28th, 2013 3:05 pm

It is the tax that is expensive, gas itself is cheap.

  10. bill on February 28th, 2013 1:41 pm

When Teddy Roosevelt broke up Standard Oil, Rockefeller became richer because he owned parts of all of the new oil companies. Our glorius leaders have allowed the big three oil companies to buy up all the independents, so that now they have a virtual monopoly and can control price increases by shutting down a plant or changing from winter to summer blends, etc. or any other excuse they can come up with. If they aren’t a monopoly then how can prices go up when we have an overabundance of gas and are having to sell it to foreign countries. It’s obvious that there is a market manipulation going on by the billionaires who are in control.

  11. Duke of Wawbeek on February 28th, 2013 12:26 pm

Bill I find your unfounded allegations regarding a “Banking Mafia” and the Federal Reserve to be racist and offensive. No one is controlling the supply of money and
there is no evil lobby influncing our elected officals. There is only a limited supply
of oil in the world and demand increases each day. Your attempt to place a liable
on the matter is just plain silly.

  12. Mark on February 28th, 2013 10:42 am

    @Henry Coe

So OPEC setting the prices per barrel of crude has nothing to do with pricing?

If we drilled MORE in the US and lessened our dependence on foreign oil, WE CAN control the pricing of gasoline somewhat!

Alternative fuels are way off in the future. We rely on fossil fuels for too much because people don’t want nuclear power plants near them. Until we have the technology for alternative fuels that is cheap and plentiful, we are going to rely on fossil fuels, and “I” believe we should do everything we can to put the money in US pockets, and NOT OPEC’s!!

The BIG problem is, is that no one wants it in their back yard! Just like Ted Kennedy didn’t want the wind turbine farm off the coast of Massachusetts, because it would spoil his view when sailing on the weekends!!

Tell you what, if I knew for sure I had a oil deposit under my back yard, I’d drill!!

@ henry.. Im not complaining at all about gas prices .. Ive worked in many different countries & if you think gas is high in the US, most dont have a clue..Why should Floridians get fuel at the pump cheaper than Louisiana or any other State that promotes Drilling when most of our State is totally against it? Better yet, cut Florida off totally & thats fine by me..

  16. Jane on February 28th, 2013 8:45 am

If the gas keeps going up and the budget cuts happen the economy will tank again….simple economics. Lower pay, higher prices=less spending=hurts businesses=lower economy. Send emails to your senator…they are holding everything hostage.

  17. Fishhook240 on February 28th, 2013 8:43 am

GREED, GREED, GREED The oil companies are just a bunch of greedy lying people. Look around, theres a monopoly going on in this country. And you know when theres a monopoly then the price will go up. The oil companies know this and they know what they are doing. If anybody every lived in town you would have known about Citco fuel depot on Barrancas Ave. Well if you know about it then you know about the other fuel depot on Main Street RK Allen Oils. Well they bought out the Citco/Mocar on Baranncas and then torn it down to eliminate competition. They are the only fuel depot in Pensacola now (Yesterday they were out of gasolene). This is happening all accross the USA. The same goes with refinerys, They will not build any new ones because of supply and demand. They blame it in the EPA and maybe there is some truth about this but I believe its just smoking mirrors. They know they can’t drive the price up if theres a lot of supply. This is where the Government should step in and regulate this industry.

  18. Bob on February 28th, 2013 8:33 am

Obama wants to raise the minimum wage to $ 9.00 makes him look good in the eyes of some factions..He will be taking it all back with the other hand. In all reality most are just spinning their wheels, hoping for a better day and it is not going to happen until Washington D C has a thorough house cleaning.

  19. Henry Coe on February 28th, 2013 8:30 am

@Joe, You could open up 500 new wells on and off shore in Florida and it would have nothing to do with the price of gas.
Gas prices are set by Wall Street regulators and just because oil might be drilled closed to home has nothing to do with where oil companies decide to sell it.
People who don’t want drilling just don’t want the risk involved for pollution and want more achievements made with alternative fuels.
Prices probably should be higher, but hopefully, until the economy gets stronger it won’t go any higher.
Being someone who is poor, gas prices are kickin’ my butt in an extreme way. Not being able to afford to fill up is also really annoying.

  20. David Huie Green on February 28th, 2013 8:26 am

If oil companies are a monopoly, why can folks buy stock in hundreds of different companies?
    Is Norway in on it?
Is Hugo Chavez in on it?
    Is Mexico in on it?
    Are . . ?

    David thinking it doesn’t meet
    the standard definition of “monopoly”

  21. Henry Coe on February 28th, 2013 8:22 am

I’ve seen several stations at $3.79. It’s a shame Wall Street Speculators spike the price like this. Every time stock markets increase with the economy getting better, the gas prices start going up to keep everyone broke instead of staying where they are which would help other areas of the economy start to take off.
Between fuel prices being exploited, banks squeezing the poor with service fees and no budget deal bringing us to sequestration, not to mention Foldgers coffee almost doubling in price over the last 5 year, our economy just doesn’t get a break. We should be further ahead and might be except for private interest that are being greedy while stagnating economic growth.

  22. joe on February 28th, 2013 7:50 am

IMO , gas should be much higher in Florida than other states since Florida does not allow Offshore Drilling & very little land Drilling.. I live in NW Fla & will gladly pay more for fuel..It amazes me how the same people who complain about gas prices are the same ones protesting Drilling in our State.. Maybe one day people will wake up…

Rockefeller is dead but his monopoly lives own and still bleeds us dry. JP Morgan is dead but his banking mafia still controls the Fed and through the money supply chain, pulls the strings of politicians everywhere.

  26. just saying on February 28th, 2013 6:06 am

Add that .04 tax on gas for escambia county and look where we are heading. Well they say America is overweight I guess we will fix that with all the walking that some folks will have to end up doing.

  27. cheap on February 28th, 2013 4:52 am

Thats nothing, the county wants to put 4 cents on.

  28. Jane on February 28th, 2013 4:33 am

And our County Commissioners want to add a 4 cents gas tax to burden us even more.
