Deputy Pursuit Ends With Crash, Two Injured

February 15, 2013

A high speed chase involving Escambia County Sheriff’s deputies ended with a crash on Michigan Avenue Thursday afternoon.

The Florida Highway Patrol said 28-year old Antonio Emmanuel Moorer fled from Escambia County deputies at a high rate of speed for several miles. As he approached Memphis Avenue, he veered to the right from the inside lanes and appeared to be turning right when he struck another vehicle driven by 47-year old Tonya G. Madarena of Pensacola.

Madarena was transported to Sacred Heart Hospital in serious condition.

Moorer fled the accident scene on foot but was arrested a short time later at a nearby Tom Thumb. After being treated for his injuries at Sacred Heart, Moorer was arrested and transported to the Escambia County Jail.

Moorer was charged by the FHP with fleeing and eluding law enforcement resulting in a crash with serious bodily harm, driving while license suspended habitual traffic offender and driving with no license. He was charged by the Escambia County Sheriff’s Office with failure to appear in a felony drug case.

Pcola is a scary place right now.. People are starving in the 850 so naturally it’s going to be full of crimes… I got me and my family out of der.. I went to school wit Antonio… I’m prayin for pcola.. I did not know he was the person that shot the law..

I hope Antonio Moorer gets put away forever, never to be set free on us again. BUT, the brave law enforcement people are to serve and protect us. I don’t think the speeding police vehicles going down Michigan Ave with traffic in all four lanes was very protective.
Also the correlation to alcohol makers is quite a stretch.

I am a strong advocate of crime prevention, though our current system does not make provision for it, not yet anyway.

Yes, let the professionals (ECSO) handle the problem. It’s surprising how people who are unwilling to put on the uniform and put their lives on the line are so quick to critique the decisions that the people who protect us make.

Thank God no one died in this incident. That being said, it’s also surprising how people scream “SUE SUE SUE” because the lady was injured in the accident, yet no one screams “SUE SUE SUE alcohol manufacturers” becuase of the thousands of DUI deaths in the country.

Antonio Moorer is the convicted felon with multiple drug charges and a habitual traffic offender (also a felony). Antonio Moorer is the one who chose to flee in a vehicle. Antonio Moorer is the one who put the public at risk. Antonio Moorer is the one who lost control of his vehicle. Antonio Moorer is the one who injured the lady. Antonio Moorer is the bad guy… ECSO are the good guys and did the job that no one else wants to do. They do it so we don’t have to!

    Think people, think.

seems like they tried to stop him when they realized he was wanted for failure to appear in a felony drug case, which usually means, he ain’t gonna be so easy to find, I have a feeling there is going to be another charge pending, because if I remember right Escambia’s policy still has to be a violent felony to chase

I am amazed at the callousness of some people. Have you ever been driving and could not pin point where the sirens were coming from. What if they are coming up behind you at around 90 mph. The poor woman never had a chance.

If he was being chased for a minor traffic offense, it was dangerously wrong to pursue him. If they knew who he was before the chase, get backup and stop him. Or they probably knew how to find him anyway. Now, who do you think is going to pay for all this. Mostly the Escambia county property owners. The county will probably be sued. Some fancy downtown lawyer will get another condo or Porsche out of it.

puddin how stupid can you be. That lady as you called her was just sitting at a light waiting for it to change. So how do you suggest she get out of the way. No excuses are good enough for this low life. Maybe his momma ought to share a jail cell with him.

  8. paul on February 15th, 2013 3:45 pm

Why bother risking innocent lives in a chase scene when the judges just slap them on the wrist and let them go?

  9. puddin on February 15th, 2013 2:00 pm

I knew this young man, along with his brother and a sister. They were not raised right. Mom would put the brother on the bus with a bag of chips for breakfast. Antonio was a sweet natured kid who really didnt have much of a chance to be a decent citizen because his role models were less than upstanding members of society. All of that doesnt come close to excusing what he did though. Why were they chasing his THIS TIME? Who cares. Im really sorry that lady got hurt but if there were 20 cop cars youd think she would have heard the sirens and got out of the way. Hope she is ok. To Antonio, I told you over and over “you are smart. you are better than your raising, you can achieve greatness if you only try” Too bad he didnt try. :-( Now he will rot in prison, a burden on society just like his worthless parents. Wish I had tried harder to reach this kid. Wondering how his sibs are doing? Hope they dont let him out of prison yet again. Epic fail on our court system!

Does anyone know why the chase began? Probably just speeding.

  11. Adam on February 15th, 2013 12:26 pm

Mike, if that was your mother, wife or daughter, would you still say “great choice”.

Bobby, the felon hit the poor lady, not a cop. No one is sympathizing with the stinking criminal. We are sympathizing with the absolutely innocent woman that will probably suffer the rest of her life. I ask you the same question I asked Mike. If that was your mother, wife or daughter, would you still say she was stupid?

    REGARDING:
“isn’t this the guy who shot the deputy in the stomach last year at oak wood apt??? Why was he even out of jail after that???”

    Yep, he was charged anyway.
    http://www.northescambia.com/2012/07/escambia-deputy-shooting-suspect-arrested
Also charged first degree premeditated murder last year but charge dropped — unlike the stolen vehicle and weapons charges which were filed but the record says no trial even though they weren‘t dropped. Most confusing. Many charges for drugs and reckless driving over the years, burglary, possession of weapon by convicted felon, same old same old.

As to why he’s out, that’s a very good question but instead, we feel the need to wonder at the law enforcement officers who tried to stop him.

    David in an interesting world

Would it have been any safer to let him go and he commits more violent crimes? Pursuits are dangerous but they are sometimes justified. Look up his court history and you will see that this one was justified.

  14. No Excuses on February 15th, 2013 10:56 am

Darn – for all of you who think that the chase should be discontinued if it’s “busy”, how long do you think it would take the criminals to figure out they won’t be chased if they commit their crimes at the height of a busy work day? Most criminals know as much about the law as the LEO’s do and probably more than you or I because it affects them more. AND, they share that information with each other.

Too bad we can’t train our criminals to misbehave when it’s not busy on the roads so our LEO’s can chase them down unimpeded.

  15. Kellie Jones on February 15th, 2013 9:52 am

Perfectly said Bobby. People have no clue how to handle Law Enforcement issues, but LEO. @ Marie-unfortunately LEO can not pick and choose when the “bad guys”
will be out committing crimes, so this time just happened to be on a busier street when they needed to get this one. Don’t talk about stuff you don’t know about.

  16. EJ on February 15th, 2013 9:45 am

BOBBY……What a great, logical, intelligent post. There are far too many criminal sympathizers in and out of the judicial system. Keep your beliefs, someday things will return to an AMERICA that used to be.

  17. Fran Frank on February 15th, 2013 9:34 am

I was there yesterday on Michigan Ave. when all hell broke loose!!! I was terrified by all the cops blue lights high speed, that guy blew past me as if i was sitting still,I knew that someone innocent was going to be injured ! Really did we need that many police officers chasing one bad guy on this busy highway, prayers for the innocent person.

  18. Bobby on February 15th, 2013 9:27 am

Let the experts handle it. None of you know what was the best thing to do. The deputies are the experts NOT YOU! If there are 20 deputies with lights and sirens on racing down a road and you are too stupid to get out of the way and hide then you probably need to get hurt so you can learn a lesson. Also funny is that it is nearly always the people who know the criminal saying “They shouldn’t have chased him. He didn’t deserve it.” You are what is wrong with the world. when you can sympothize with a stinking criminal.

  19. City Resident on February 15th, 2013 8:38 am

The high speed chase should have been terminated. The ESCO seems to enjoy the chases, how many officers have wrecked in these chases not alone how many have caused innocent people to be injured. The sheriff needs to take a look at his policy. Tonya didn’t deserve this. She was just leaving her moms house.

Also why was this guy out on bond on a drug charge with his record. How about it judges.

  20. Adam on February 15th, 2013 8:31 am

There were at least twenty ESO vehicles that raced down Michigan Ave with their lights and sirens on. This went on for five minutes at the very least. It was a very dangerous place to be.

  22. MARIE on February 15th, 2013 8:18 am

Bad choice to be chasing down this guy at such a busy time of day. He should be in jail no question on that but this is a busy road and more people could have been hurt or killed. They would have gotten him sooner or later. I hope the lady that he seriously injured is going to be ok.

  23. Mike O. on February 15th, 2013 7:42 am

I agree! It was a great choice. The guy was wanted in connection with a FELONY.

  24. sniper on February 15th, 2013 7:22 am

Great idea! Let’s chase a man through a busy neighborhood in a car speeding out of control until he crashes into someone….
