Second Time: Century Man Charged With Strangulation Of Girlfriend
January 21, 2013
For the second time in seven months, a Century man has been charged in connection with an alleged attempt to strangle one of the mothers of his children.
Maurice Austin, 24, was charged with battery by strangulation and remains in the Escambia County Jail with bond set at $5,000.
The victim told Escambia County Sheriff’s deputies that she was driving near Cottage and Zion and was forced to stop when Austin jumped in front of her car. She said Austin forced his way into the driver’s seat, drove to Zion Street and parked the vehicle at a friend’s house.
The victim claimed Austin hit her with closed fists, pulled her from the vehicle by the hair and strangled her until she passed out. Deputies noted bruising on the victim’s legs, shoulders, chest and arms.
Austin faced similar allegations back in July 2012 when another victim, then pregnant with his child, told deputies that she was walking down Jefferson Avenue near East Street in Century to catch a ride with friends alongside Highway 29. She said Austin was standing in the road.
The victim claimed Austin grabbed her by the neck, pushed her into the ditch and began fighting with her. The victim told deputies she broke free and continued walking toward her destination. She said that Austin’s girlfriend pulled off to the side of the road and ran over her foot. The two women — Austin’s girlfriend and the mother of his child — tried to fight, but Austin kept them apart briefly before saying he was going to step back and watch them fight, according to an Escambia County Sheriff’s Office report.
A third party drove by, broke up the fight and transported the victim to the Escambia County Sheriff’s Office Century Substation, the report states. The victim reportedly suffered cuts, bruises and swelling. Her flip-flop was broken on the foot she claimed was ran over, but she told deputies that there was no pain and she could move all her toes.
When questioned by deputies, Austin’s girlfriend denied knowledge of the alleged events.
Charges against Austin were dropped in the July 2012 incident after the victim refused to testify against Austin.

REGARDING:
“he is just a child that need help ”
24 year old child
AND
“has no one to turn to and take his angry out on :
Sure he does — the assorted mothers of his assorted children.
AND
“I don’t agree with him hitting on women but hey who is perfect”
Justifications like that are the reason some people never learn the difference between good and evil.
“I don’t agree with him killing all those children but hey who is perfect?”
“I don’t agree with him robbing banks but hey who is perfect?”
“I don’t agree with him burning down houses with people in them but hey who is perfect?”
Nobody requires perfection but is it so wrong to require people to not hurt others?

I know this young man he isn’t a monster he is just a child that need help this young man has no one to turn to and take his angry out on people he doesn’t mean it he doesn’t know how to express his self if you walk a mile in his shoes and see what he is going through then u will see no I don’t agree with him hitting on women but hey who is perfect
I know this young man and not the monster that people r trying to make him be what he need is help this man has been on his on all his life no one to show him the right way maybe if you lock him up he mite can get the help he needs
@someone – You said… “I was in state prison with this guy. hes very very very very violent. he ran aroudn thinking he owned everyone and everything. very violent person definately needs help or off the street”
I agree with you. A guy this is a violent batterer who does not care about anyone or anything. He doesn’t care who he hurts and he will never change! He will end up back in prison, this time I hope for a long, long time! But a $5000 bond? Come on!

“This time there was a witness”
And that is good but it is not good to set up a system in which anybody could accuse anybody of anything at all and they would be punished as if guilty even though there were no evidence. And of course we still need a jury to agree the witness is credible.

This time there was a witness….When officers arrive at a DV scene and the victim has sustained injuries the aggressor si charged by the officers responding and an arrest is made.
Why didn’t the state pick up the charges in the first girl he done this to? They had the statement from the girl!!
As far as the second victim if he jumps in front if your car again to they you to stop, run over his ass and hope it kills him before he kills someone!!
And $5,000.00 bond??? What the heck is going on?
***“The victim claimed Austin hit her with closed fists, pulled her from the vehicle by the hair and strangled her until she passed out.” Is that not attempted murder?
Sounds like he is an animal and needs to be caged as such!!
I was in state prison with this guy. hes very very very very violent. he ran aroudn thinking he owned everyone and everything. very violent person definately needs help or off the street

Well, you can’t jail people just because you believe they are guilty. If the witnesses against him don’t exist, he should not be jailed. If a jury doesn’t hear evidence making it reasonable to convict him, he should not be in jail.
We’re all in this together. What injustice you could do him can be done to you.

This was not the same person as the first incident that girl was stupid to drop the charges but my daughter Hannah won’t. I hope he spends the Max the judge can give him. Hes a coward to put his hands on a girl I hope his fellow inmates show him what a man does and I hope he rots in prison.
Dan-o 2 different women. Hopefully this one Will testify
in some places, once the police are involved, it does not matter if the victim wants to press charges or not. it is taken completely out of the victim’s hands and the police press charges. these dangerous types need to be taken out of society. too bad money and resources for mental health and rehab is dwindling away down to nothing. he obviously needs it with his anger issues and low impulse control. sad for everyone, all of us actually…
Unfortunately, our justice system will not stop letting him out until he kills.
Hannah isnt going to drop the charges shes doing great working and soon getting her apartment shes not going to let him or nenody else hold her back
Isn’t 5,00.00 bond a little too LOW?!?!
So she needs to testify/get a restraining order and move! Unfortunate but sometimes that is the only solution unless she wants to continue being hurt or maybe killed.
she must have fought back. The young mans eyebrows are all scratched up!
These were two different girls hopefully he does time so this nut will be off the streets hes an animal.
Obvious she didn’t learn the first. dan-o hit it right the head..
“Charges against Austin were dropped in the July 2012 incident after the victim refused to testify against Austin.”
If she refuses to testify this time, he may be successful the third time around.
