Health Alert Lifted After Cove Landfill Fire Extinguished

January 29, 2013

The Escambia County Health Department has lifted the health advisory that was issued last week for health risks associated with smoke from the Cove Landfill fire.

Health officials said they have been informed that the debris fire has been extinguished and environmental health inspectors have confirmed that the resultant smoke has dissipated. The landfill is located in the Ensley area behind Pine Meadow Elementary.

Persons who believe they are experiencing residual health problems or symptoms related to the smoke should contact their primary care physician, according to the health department.

Malcom Thomas has frequented our campus the last several days. He is taking measures to stop this landfill’s right to take additional debris. But, it is sad take it was allowed to be located next to our school in the first place.
The teachers and students were very happy the health alert was lifted and outside activities can resume!

The photo above appears to have been taken from the steps that lead to my child’s portable classroom at Pine Meadow. A landfill next to an elementary school. Whose brilliant idea was that? Luckily this fire began on a Saturday, what about the next one?

I’m glad the fire is out, but I can only hope our elected officials and governent entities which oversee our safety will continue to delve into the operation at this landffill.

As has been said quite a few times…this landfill emits a smell even when it’s not on fire. The smell is especially evident at night.
