Third Of Four Homicide Suspects Arrested
June 6, 2013
The third of four suspects involved in a December 2012 homicide has been arrested.
Deontrez Levon Kitt, 27, was taken into custody without incident around 2:30 p.m. Wednesday at a residence in the 5300 block of North Blue Angel Parkway. He was charged with capital murder on a grand jury indictment.
Meanwhile, police continue searching for Anthony L. Wilson Jr., 29, address unknown. He also is wanted on a grand jury indictment for capital murder.
Two other males – Deavis Saulsberry, 24, and Trevon Nelson, 28, both of Pensacola – have already been arrested and charged with capital murder for the December 24, 2012, kidnapping and murder of Torrance Hackworth, 32, of 1321 North J St., Pensacola. Around 2:45 a.m. on December 24, the suspects approached Hackworth when he arrived at his residence. They then forced him into the apartment, bound him with duct tape and held him in the apartment.
One of the males awakened Hackworth’s 36-year-old girlfriend and their four children, ranging in age from four to 10, and ordered them at gunpoint into the living room. As all six residents were held hostage, the suspects ransacked the house, demanded money and stole various items.
When Hackworth insisted he didn’t have any money because he had bought Christmas presents for the children, the suspects said they were going to kill him. The suspects then beat and struck Hackworth several times with a firearm in front of the woman and children before dragging him outside and putting him into the truck of the woman’s vehicle, which they used to flee the scene.
Approximately two to three hours after the abduction, the woman’s vehicle was found partially submerged at the Sanders Beach boat launch. Hackworth was shot several times and his body was found December 26 in a vacant lot in the 1600 block of North S Street. The incident is believed to have been drug related.
Agencies that assisted the Pensacola Police Department with the investigation were the Escambia County Sheriff’s Office, Gun Crime Response Team, Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms, and State Attorney’s Office.
Anyone having information on Wilson’s location is asked to contact the Pensacola Police Department at (850) 435- 1900.

June 6, 2013

The Biscuits held on for a 4-2 win. The Biscuits had runners at first and second with one our when Mark Thomas tripled to the left-centerfield gap giving a Biscuits a 3-2 lead. A batter later, Thomas scored on a sacrifice fly to make it a 4-2 Biscuits lead.
C.J. Riefenhauser slammed the door on the Wahoos in the ninth inning to preserve the lead. He earned his seventh save of the season. Wilkin De La Rosa (L, 1-3) took the loss for Pensacola. Both runners on base were his even though Brian Pearl took the mound when the game resumed. Merrill Kelly (W, 5-5) earned the win for Montgomery after allowing two runs over seven innings before the game was suspended on Tuesday.

The Blue Wahoos are expected to send RHP Josh Smith (4-5, 3.79) to the mound in game one against LHP Enny Romero (4-1, 3.09). In game two Pensacola will go with RHP Shaun Ellis (1-1, 3.50) against the Biscuits RHP Victor Mateo (2-6, 6.35)

Criminal Investigation Prompted By Commissioner’s Comments
June 5, 2013
Escambia County Sheriff David Morgan said Tuesday in a letter that he is directing his investigators to interview Escambia Commission Chairman Gene Valentino, and the Sheriff is asking Valentino to recuse himself from a Department of Justice Working Group.
Last week during an interview with WEAR 3, Valentino referenced “correctional officers playing video games on laptop computers and ignoring prisoners” and said “let’s address these issues before you come to me asking for money”. And the following day, he told two radio stations, including NewsRadio 1620, that the sheriff was holding a gun to the head of the county commission and that the commission will look for further efficiencies in the jail operations before agreeing to funding, according to the sheriff’s letter.
“For you or I to attempt to deflect our responsibilities by name calling, finger pointing and nitpicking managerial capabilities (or lack thereof) is an area I strongly encourage you not to venture into,” Morgan wrote in Tuesday’s letter to Valentino.
Morgan said he has opened a criminal investigation based upon Valentino’s “statements as a material witness” regarding correctional officers playing video games on laptops — a third degree felony offense. He said Valentino will be asked to speak to an investigator under oath.
The sheriff also asked Valentino to recuse himself from the Department of Justice Working Group. The group is working, with a deadline just over a month away, to address problems in a Department of Justice report on the Escambia County Jail that found prisoners’ rights were routinely violated, inadequate mental health services and other problems.
Valentino is currently on an economic trade trip to Panama.
Sacred Heart Health System Cutting Up To 150 Jobs
June 5, 2013
Changes are underway at Sacred Heart Health System that could cost between 125 and 150 people their jobs.
About three percent of the hospital’s 5,000 employees will be laid off from facilities in Pensacola, Miramar Beach and Port St. Joe. The layoffs are because the hospital is “facing daunting challenges because of a decline in revenues caused by government cuts in Medicare and Medicaid reimbursement” and a drop in admissions.
“To sustain our mission in the face of current trends, we must undertake a wide range of actions to reduce costs and restructure our system for the future,” Sacred Heart President and CEO Susan Davis said. “We are looking at all ways to reduce expenses and our plans include a reduction of supply costs and a reduction in the size of our workforce.”
