The Ernest Ward Middle School Eagles beat the Panthers of Excel Thursday night, 42-30.

Ernest Ward will travel to Foley on October 8 before ending their season with a 6 p.m. home game in Walnut Hill against T.R. Miller.

Lady Chiefs Earn District Win Over Freeport

The Northview Lady Chiefs earned another district volleyball win Thursday over Freeport.

Meeting on neutral ground in Jay, Northview beat Freeport 25-18, 14-25, 25-14, 15-25, 15-7. Lily Townson had two kills, 13 assists and 15 digs.  Danielle Steadham had one ace, eight kills, five blocks and 18 digs.

The Lady Chiefs will host Baker at home on Tuesday.

Sheriff’s Office Unveils ‘Take Back Your Streets’ Video

“Take Back Your Streets” is the title of a new public outreach campaign launched Thursday by the Escambia County Sheriff’s Office in response to ongoing acts of gun violence in the county. The campaign is aimed at encouraging community involvement in reporting crimes and combating gun violence.

Sheriff David Morgan, School Superintendent Malcolm Thomas, FBI Resident Agent in Charge James Stewart, Pensacola Police Department Chief Chip Simmons, Mayor Ashton Hayward, ATF Resident Agent in Charge Randy Beach,Commissioner Lumon May and Pastor Rodney Jones presented the first of three public service announcements at Thursday’s meeting. Two more videos will follow over the coming months.

The videos encourage members of the community to work actively with law enforcement to solve and prevent crime.

Two Alarm Fire At Pine Forest Road Business

The cause of a two-alarm commercial building fire on Pine Forest Road Thursday night is under investigation.

Firefighters at the Bellview Fire Station looked almost directly across the street from their station about 9:30 p.m. and noticed the heavy smoke coming from Southern Floor Systems at 7012 Pine Forest Road, just north of Longleaf Drive. Smoke and flames were visible from the 50,000 square foot warehouse building.

There were reports that possibly explosive materials were stored in one part of the building, but there were no explosions reported. By 10:10 p.m., firefighters reported that they believed the fire was out.

There were no reports of injuries.

The State Fire Marshal’s Office was called to the scene to investigate the cause of the fire.

No Injuries In Bratt Crash

There were no injuries in an accident when a pickup and its load hit the Beaver Dam Bridge in Bratt Thursday afternoon.

The driver of a pickup truck hauling a second pickup on a vehicle trailer lost control and slammed into the guardrail on the West Highway 4 Bridge about 4  p.m.. The driver and his two passengers were not injured. The accident did slow traffic for a period, with one lane of West Highway 4 blocked.

The Walnut Hill Station of Escambia Fire Rescue, Atmore Ambulance and the Florida Highway Patrol responded to the crash.

Tuesday night, a pickup truck ended up in Beaver Dam Creek during an accident at the same location. Click here for that story and photos.

Investigators Locate Persons Wanted For Questioning In Murder

The Escambia County Sheriff’s Office said Thursday morning that investigators are no longer seeking to question several individuals  in connection with the September 19 murder of 14-year old Kenteyonna Anderson.

Investigators said they are no longer looking for Juvonte Huff, Javonte Pope, Christianna Jones, Qiusjhinee Miller, Jaquest Norris and Zachary Brooks.

Anderson, 14, was outside with friends when a fight erupted nearby and shots rang out, according family members. She was reportedly struck multiple times in the chest. She was transported by ambulance to Baptist Hospital where she was pronounced dead a short time later.

Anyone with information on the murder is asked to call Crime Stoppers at (850) 433-STOP or the Escambia County Sheriff’s Office at (850) 436-9620. Callers are not required to provide their name and may be eligible for a cash reward.

Century Man Sentenced For Burglary, Copper Theft At Town Building

A Century man has been sentenced in connection with a burglary and copper theft at vacant town-owned industrial building in Century.

Jonathan Devon Andrews, 29, was convicted of felony burglary, grand theft and criminal mischief with property damage. He was sentenced to 180 days in jail, with credit for 90 days served, plus five years probation by Judge Jan Shackelford. He was also ordered to pay restitution of $16,221 at $150 per month minimum to the Town of Century and seek gainful employment.

Andrews burglarized the former Van Nevel Helicopters building on Industrial Boulevard in Century in late January. He forcibly removed sections of industrial size copper tubing from eight outdoor air conditioning condensing units, according to an arrest report, and removed a garbage can from the building that contained three paint gun spray heads. The air conditioning units were not opened or damaged.

According to investigators, Andrews was positively identified as the suspect by a fingerprint removed from broken glass where entry was made into the front of the building.

Traffic Delays Today On Highway 29 In Century

Southbound drivers can expect traffic delays today in Century.

Southbound traffic on North Century Boulevard (Highway 29) will be restricted to one lane from the Alabama state line to East Highway 4 from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m.  Crews will be working to repair storm inlets.

Maintenance activities are weather dependent and may be delayed or re-scheduled in the event of inclement weather. Motorists are reminded to watch for traffic flaggers, pay attention to the speed limit when traveling through the construction area, and to use caution when driving in work zones, according to the Florida Department of Transportation.

Escambia Man Gets 15 Years For One Day Robbery Spree

An Escambia County man has been sentenced to a decade and a half in prison for a one-day crime spree last New Year’s Eve.

Robert Tomas Ward, 25, pleaded no contest to three counts of robbery with a weapon, one count of resisting an officer without violence and two counts of attempted robbery without a weapon. Following the plea, Circuit Judge Joel W. Boles sentenced Ward to 15 years in state prison.

On December 31, 2012, Ward robbed, or attempted to rob, five separate businesses in the New Warrington Road area, including Subway, Dollar General, Family Dollar and two Circle K stores. When Ward entered each store, he indicated that he had a weapon and demanded the clerk empty the cash register. In both the Subway and Family Dollar robberies, store clerks refused to hand over any cash.

No weapon was seen by any of the store clerks, and law enforcement was unable to locate a weapon.
