Gilmores Named Escambia County Farm Family Of The Year

Jacob and Carla Gilmore of Molino, along with their twin daughters, have been named as the Escambia County Farm Family of the Year.
They are part owners of Gizmo Angus Farm, a purebred Angus cattle operation in Molino. The farms takes pride in using the latest technologies in the industry to raise the highest quality beef.
Jacob grew up in agriculture participating in 4-H and FFA while attending Tate High School. He was honored by receiving the Star Green Hand, Star Farmer, Outstanding Agriculture Technology student, Who’s Who Among American High School Students and was a state finalist in beef production entrepreneurship.
Jacob participated in the Escambia County Interstate Fair Livestock Show andSale from the age of 8 until he was 19. In two different years, he had the Grand Champion Steer. He also won awards for showmanship. Additionally he had the Grand Champion laying hens when he showed in the poultry division.
Carla married into the farming life seven years ago, and has become a strong advocate of agriculture. She supports Jacob’s work and is already planning for their daughters to be involved in the farm.
Jacob and Carla have become very active in the Young Farmers and Ranchers program, helping promote agriculture in Escambia County and across the state.
Gilmore twins Syndey and Ella and already curious about the Angus cattle, own their own cowboy boots and love joining their dad on the farm.

One Injured In Single Vehicle Crash Near Bratt

One person was injured in a single vehicle crash near Bratt Wednesday night.
The 23-year old female driver of a Lincoln Navigator lost control on Breastworks Road at intersection of Pine Barren Road about 10:15 p.m. The vehicle left the roadway, ran into a brushy area and hit a tree.
The driver was transported by Escambia County EMS to Jay Hospital with non life-threatening injuries. The accident is under investigation by the Florida Highway Patrol. The McDavid Station of Escambia Fire Rescue also responded to the crash.

Log Truck Driver Runs Off Road, Into Wooded Area

A log truck driver escaped injury when he plowed into wood area Wednesday night in McDavid.
The driver of the 18-wheeler was northbound on Highway 29 north of Main Street when he ran off the roadway, struck a guardrail and ran into wooded area, taking down several small trees. He was evaluated on scene and refused to be transported to the hospital.
The 8:47 p.m. accident is under investigation by the Florida Highway Patrol. The McDavid Station of Escambia Fire Rescue and Escambia County EMS also responded to the crash.

Homeless Man Charged With Stabbing 13-Year Old

A homeless man has been arrested for stabbing a 13-year old.
Wendell D. Suggs, 23, was charged with battery, aggravated battery, sexual assault with weapon and petit theft following the incident in the 200 block of Edison Drive in the Mayfair community, according to the Escambia County Sheriff’s Office.
The juvenile was transported to a local hospital with non-life threatening injuries. After an intense search by deputies and a K-9 unit, Suggs were taken into custody in the block of Edison Drive.
He remains in the Escambia County jail without bond.
Free Drive-Thru Flu Shots Friday In Atmore

There will be a free drive-thru flu clinic at Tom Byrne Park in Atmore on Friday from 7:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m.
Escambia County, Alabama, residents can receive a free (flu) shot without leaving their automobile. In addition to providing flu shots to residents, the clinic will serve as an exercise to test emergency protocols for events that would require mass vaccination.
Flu outbreaks generally occur from November to March in Alabama. The symptoms can include fever, cough, sore throat, headache, and fatigue. For most people the flu lasts only a few days, but for others it can lead to pneumonia and other breathing problems. It can cause fever and seizures in children.
In addition to getting a flu shot, the public is reminded to follow basic infection control measures. These include covering the mouth when coughing and frequent hand washing.
The flu clinic is being held by the Escambia County Health Department with support from the City of Atmore, the Atmore office of the American Red Cross, the Escambia County (AL) EMA and other local organizations.

Century Correctional ‘Grows’ Outdoor Decor For Century Library

New “homegrown” fall decorations are on display at the Century Branch Library. Most of the items in the display were grown by inmates at Century Correctional Institute.
“We at the library really appreciate their thoughts and hard work to decorate,” said Pat Rigel, Century Branch librarian.
The Century Branch Library will host a story time and Halloween party on Thursday, October 25 at 4 pm.. for children of all ages.

Linda Lee Cofield Peacock

Mrs. Linda Lee Cofield Peacock, 70, passed away on Tuesday, October 9, 2012, in Mobile.
Mrs. Peacock was a native of Flomaton, a former resident of Byrneville and a resident of Grand Bay for the past 27 years. Mrs. Peacock was an employee of Landis Flag Car Service with 28 years of service, where she was better known as “BlueJean”. She was a bus driver for the Escambia County Florida School Board with 13 years of service.
She is preceded in death by a daughter, Tayna Marie Cox.
Survivors include her son, Greg (JoAnn) Peacock of Spanish Fort; daughter, Jeralynn Rene Scott of Mobile; four brothers, Gerald (Flo) Cofield of Flomaton, Kenny Slater of Grand Bay, Nicki Cofield of Flomaton and Lee Cofield of Kingsland, GA; one sister, Clara (Jack) Bonner of Needham, AL; ten grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be Saturday, October 13, 2012, at 2 p.m. at the Petty-Eastside Chapel Funeral Home with the Rev. Bill Thompson and Rev. James Bonner officiating.
Burial will follow at Traveler’s Rest Cemetery.
Visitation will be Saturday, October 13, 2012, from 12:30 p.m. until funeral time at the Petty-Eastside Chapel Funeral Home.
Pallbearers will be Billy Bonner, David Bonner, Chris Slater, Daniel Scott, Michael Powell and Dan Harrelson.
Student Info Compromised In Large Data Breach

An identity theft case at Northwest Florida State College is growing in scope.
Personal identifying information about students from around Florida who were eligible for Bright Futures scholarships several years ago – including social security numbers in some cases – has been either stolen or accidentally released, state officials said Wednesday. The 200,000 records from 2005-2007 were part of an “information security breach” reported by Northwest Florida State College in Niceville.
The Department of Education said Wednesday that the breach also involved more than 3,000 employee records from the school, some of which contained confidential financial records and about 76,000 student records from the college.
Several agencies were investigating and trying to determine the extent of the breach and who may have gotten access to the information.
“While some of the contact information is dated, we will be trying to reach every student whose records may have been captured,” said Florida College System Chancellor Randy Hanna.

Dennis Len Vickery, 55 of Poarch, passed away Tuesday October 09, 2012, at his residence. He was a carpenter born in Atmore on March 05, 1955 to the late William W. and Larncile McGhee Vickery.
Survivors include four brothers, William L. (Leslie) Vickery, Ernest (Evelyn) Vickery, both of Poarch, Arnold (Jeannie) Vickery of Dadeville, AL, and Bruce Glen Vickery of Poarch; one sister, Connie F. Vickery of Poarch; nieces and nephews, Randal, Jennifer, Ashley, Ariel, Dawn, Justin, Victoria and many other relatives and friends.
Services will be Friday, October 12, 2012, at 3 p.m. from the Atmore Memorial Chapel with Rev. Leo Luker, Jr officiating.
Interment will follow in New Home Cemetery.
Active pallbearers are Danny Jackson, Jimmy Campbell, David McGhee, Chris Blackburn, Ronnie Rolin and Paul Pearson.
Honorary Pallbearers are Don Wayne Rolin, Elvis Presley and Hubert “Bubba” Rolin.
Johnson-Quimby Funeral Home and Atmore Memorial Chapel are in charge of all arrangements.
Green Thumb Festival Planned

The 14th Annual Green Thumb Festival will be held this Saturday at the Escambia County Extension Service.
Escambia County Master Gardeners will be on hand with lots of expert advice, plants for sale and educational programs. Children can create a bug jar, birdseed hand prints to feed garden birds and plant a seed to take home.
Participants can learn how to build a raised bed for growing fall and winter vegetables, how to build a compost bin from recycled wooden pallets, and how to make a living herb wreath.
The program will take place Saturday, October 13, from 8 a.m. until noon at 3740 Stefani Road. For more information, call (850) 475-5230.
