Nancy Louise Darby

Mrs. Nancy Louise Darby, age 66, of McDavid, passed away on Sunday, November 11, 2012, at her home.

Mrs. Darby was a native of Flomaton and had been a resident of McDavid for three years coming from Bryneville. She was a homemaker and a member of the First Baptist Church of Bratt. She was preceded in death by her grandson, Danny Ray Darby.

Mrs. Darby is survived by her husband of 50 years, Roy B. Darby, Sr. of McDavid; son, Roy B. (Pam) Darby, Jr. of Pace; daughters, Vicki (James) Elliot of East Brewton, and Barbeline Ann McCaw of Century; brother, Curtis Kennedy of Flomaton; eight grandchildren and five great grandchildren.

Visitation will be held on Wednesday, November 14, 2012, at Flomaton Funeral Home Chapel from 6 until 9 p.m.

Funeral services will be held on Thursday, November 15, 2012, at 2 p.m. at Flomaton Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Jerry Caylor officiating.

Internment will follow in Crary Memorial Cemetery in Century.

Pallbearers will be Casey Kennedy, Charlie McCaw, Kenneth Washington, Bobby Chancery, Mickey Carburn and Curt Kennedy.

Sharon McGhee Peebles

Mrs. Sharon McGhee Peebles, 58, passed away on Saturday, November 10, 2012, in Atmore.

Mrs. Peebles was a native of Atmore and resided in Atmore for most of her life. Mrs. Peebles attended the Friendly Holiness Church. She was a member of the Poarch Creek Indians; she was a foster mother and grandmother to many children and was affectionately known as Grannie Sharon.

Survivors include her husband, Lester C. Peebles of Atmore; two sons, Lawrence (Chastity) Peebles of Poarch and Anthony Gaines (Bridgett) Peebles of Canoe; one brother, Tony Walker of Atmore; four sisters, Darlene (Sam) Hitchcock of Bratt,  JoAnn Nellums of Perdido, Donna Sue (Rudy) Marquette of Apachy Junction, AZ, and Carol Jean Mercer of Pensacola; and seven grandchildren.

Funeral services will be Wednesday, November 14, 2012, at 2 p.m. at the Petty-Eastside Chapel Funeral Home with Rev. William Rolin officiating.

Burial will follow at the Judson/Creek Indian Cemetery.

Visitation will be Tuesday, November 13, 2012m from 6 until 9 p.m. at the Petty-Eastside Chapel Funeral Home in

Petty-Eastside Chapel Funeral Homes is in charge of all arrangements.

Century Correctional, Forest Service Hold Trail Ride For Special Olympics

Century Correctional Institute and the Florida’s Forestry Service partnered for a recent trail ride to benefit Florida Special Olympics.

Riders with about 65 horses and five wagons with teams turned out for the first annual trail ride, which was followed by an auction. The event raised a total of $2,350 for Special Olympics. Organizers said a bigger and better event is being planned for next year.

Donations for the event included: one free shoulder mount from Cooper Taxidermy in Pace, a rifle scope from Mike’s Gun Shop in Jay, gift certificates from Circle J Western Wear in Chumuckla and Penton’s Farm Supply, halters and harnesses from Cantonment Feed, and handheld radios from S&K Communications in Century.’

Walnut Hill Fire Honors Firemen, Community Members During Fish Fry

The Walnut Hill Volunteer Fire Department honored members of the community and the department during their 43rd annual fish fry Saturday.

Diann Stewart was named Firefighter of the Year, an award chosen by her fellow firefighters. Dennis Rigby was named Officer of the Year and recognized for his 32 years of service to the department.

Escambia Grain received the Walnut Hill Volunteer Fire Department’s Community  Service Award, and former chief Al Bradley was named an honorary member.

Hundreds of people enjoyed fried catfish or grilled chicken plates during the event, with proceeds to be used to provide assistance to displaced fire victims in the area. The Northwest Florida Blood Center Bloodmobile was also on hand for a blood drive.

Cross Country: Jay Lady Royals Headed To State, Boys Place 12th

The Jay Lady Royals cross country team is state bound after a number four showing at the Region 1-1A meet Saturday in Tallahassee.

The Royals were the only public school from the regional that advanced to state with a 4th out of 13 team finish. Two Jay runners also advanced not only as part of the team, but also as individuals. Sophomore Jessica Thornton placed 5th overall with a time of 20:28.  Eighth grader Jorja Agrait placed 13th overall with a time of 21:10.

The Jay boys team did not fair as well overall, finishing 12th out of 15 teams. but improving their 1A District 1 standings to 2nd behind PCA. Sophomore Micah Kemp was the lead runner for Jay as he advances to the State meet for the Royals. Kemp finished 13th overall with a time of 17:26 for his fourth trip to state.

The state finals will be held next Saturday, November 17 at the Apalachee State Park in Tallahassee.

Worker Hit By Truck In Construction Zone

November 11, 2012

A 56-year old man was critically injured Saturday morning when he was struck by a vehicle in a construction zone.

The man was reportedly setting up traffic cones on Highway 31 at Industrial Drive in Atmore about 7 a.m. when he was hit by a full-size Ford pickup truck estimated to be traveling at least 45 mph. The force of the impact threw the man about 35 feet.

He was airlifted to Baptist Hospital in Pensacola as a “trauma alert”.  The man’s name has not been released; the accident remains under investigation.

Brewton Man Killed In Highway 31 Wreck

November 11, 2012

A Brewton man was killed in single vehicle wreck early Saturday morning in Canoe, Ala., just east of Atmore.

The accident happened just before 5 a.m. on Highway 31 at Arthur Hall Road. Edward White, 33, apparently lost control and flipped his vintage Mercury Cougar multiple times. White was pronounced deceased on the scene. There were no passengers in the vehicle.

The accident remains under investigation by the Alabama State Troopers.
