Man Charged With Shooting Into Cottage Hill Home

June 26, 2012

A Pensacola man is facing several charges after allegedly firing a 9mm round into a Cottage Hill home last weekend.

Jarred Louis  Morgan, 27, was charged with firing a deadly missile into a dwelling, discharging a firearm in a public place, improper exhibition of a firearm, criminal mischief and possession of a firearm with an altered serial number. He was released from the Escambia County Jail on a $14,000 bond.

Deputies responded to a home in the 1800 block of North Highway 95A where multiple people reported hearing gunfire and that a round had struck the side of a house. Deputies found a bullet in the home outside a room where a female and a child were inside during the incident.

Deputies began to canvas a nearby neighborhood on McKenzie Road where a resident told them that a white male he knew only as “Jarred” had been in the backyard firing a 9mm handgun.

From a description provided, deputies were able to name Morgan as their suspect, according to an Escambia County Sheriff’s Office arrest report.

When deputies confronted Morgan at his residence in a trailer park on Ten Mile Road, he admitted to firing the handgun.

“I was just shootin’ stump to try and clear the jam in my gun. My wife bought me the gun so I can protect my family,” Morgan said, according to the arrest report. “I f you give me a cigarette, I will show you where the gun is. I didn’t mean to shoot the house.”

The 9mm gun, a 9mm magazine and a box of ammunition were located at another person’s residence. Deputies discovered that someone had attempted to scratch the serial number off the gun, the report states.

Power Back On At Jail; A/C Repairs To Total $2.55 Million

June 26, 2012

The price tag is in at $2.55 million for repairs to the air conditioning systems at the Escambia County Central Booking and Detention Center that were destroyed during a June 9 flood.

Power has been restored to the facility, but it air conditioning continues to be provided by chiller units mounted on 18-wheelers outside the facility.

The total price tag is $2,548,861 to restore the mechanical systems that serve the Central Booking and Detention and the Central Energy Plant, which also provides chilled water for the cooling systems at Sheriff’s administration building, the jail complex and Juvenile Justice Center.

A portion of the total cost — $392,210 — was an initial purchase order to provide the emergency services and rental equipment necessary to restore services on a temporary basis.

The proposal by Engineered Cooling Services is expected to be approved Thursday by the Escambia County Commission. The BOCC will not accept bids on the project; the no-bid purchases are allowed under state law because Escambia County was under a state of emergency when the losses occurred.

June 26, 2012

Trial has been delayed for an Atmore man facing capital murder charges in Escambia County, Ala.

The jury trial of Cedric Jerome Floyd was expected to get underway this week, but a continuance has been granted in the case.

Floyd is accused of shooting Tina Roshell Jones, 43, inside her 5th Avenue residence in Atmore.  Jones called 911 at 12:46 Sunday morning, January 2 to report that Floyd was breaking into her home. Two minutes later, Atmore Police officers arrived and found Jones lying in the floor of the home with what appeared to be several gunshot wounds, according to Atmore Police. She was transported to Atmore Community Hospital where she was later pronounced dead.

“Witnesses at the scene said they were asleep, but were waken by Floyd demanding keys to a vehicle.  After several moments, Floyd fled the scene on foot,” said Jason Dean, Atmore Police chief, said shortly after the crime.

“While officers were at the residence, the Escambia County Sheriff’s Office received a 911 call from Cedric Jerome Floyd, 28 years of age,  the boyfriend of Jones, stating he wanted to turn himself in.  Deputies responded to Freemanville Drive where Floyd met officers.  Floyd was then taken into custody,” said Dean.

Police said Floyd made forcible entry into the home through Jones’ bedroom window in the rear of the home.

Betty Jo Fuller

June 26, 2012

Betty Jo Fuller, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt and friend, went to be with her Lord on Sunday, June 24.

Born the youngest of seven children on Oct. 23, 1938, in Jay and raised in Jay and Century, Betty married Dan Fuller at the age of 15 and the two went on to grow a family of seven children. Betty lived most of her life in and around Pensacola, but spent the 1960s in St. Louis, MO, when her husband’s job as a train engineer took the family there.

She was happy to return to her extended family in Florida, but kept a piece of St. Louis with her, remaining a devoted Cardinals fan for life. Until her health made her fragile, she loved to travel, and particularly enjoyed spending time in the mountains of Tennessee.

She had many jobs during her life, including managing the cafeteria at Santa Rosa Christian Academy and later training as a florist and hair stylist. Her creative talents were undeniable and perhaps best displayed in her amazing cooking. No family reunion was complete without her fried chicken or one of her delicious – sometimes experimental – cakes. After retiring from her last job in the hair salon at Azalea Trace, Betty stayed busy, often caring for grandchildren, spending hours talking with them and cooking their favorite meals.

Known simply as “Aunt Bea” to dozens of nieces and nephews and “Grandmamma” to her adoring grandchildren, Betty was a force of nature – the glue that held her family together – and a fighter for those she loved.

She was a tiny person, but loved with such fierceness and boundlessness that, to her family, she was bigger than life.

She was a devoted member of Smyrna Baptist Church and she loved and served her Lord and her church family.

She will be greatly missed by her family and friends, but there is comfort in the knowledge that she is with her Savior in a world free of pain and limitations, awaiting reunion with those left behind.

Betty is preceded in death by her parents, Andrew and Lillie Mae Dunsford; sister Cammie Simmons, and brothers Dewy, Rudolph and Cleon Dunsford. She is survived by her husband Daniel S. Fuller of Pensacola; three sons, Danny Fuller, wife Lisa and children Leah, Ashley and Devon; Paul Fuller, wife Donna and children Blaine, Caleb and Grace; and Marc Fuller, wife Kelli, children Branden, Abigail and Olivia; four daughters, Cindy Ford, husband Rick; Becky Fore, husband Tony and children Rachael, Tony and Angie; Lisa Trinkle, husband Mark and daughter Lily; and Allison Carter, husband Richie and sons Drew and Justin. She is also survived by her sister and best friend Vonnie LaCoste and brother A.T. Dunsford; 11 great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be held Wednesday from 6-8 p.m. and funeral services will be Thursday at 2 p.m. at Faith Chapel Funeral Home North.
