Corrections Department Appeals Prison Health Ruling

The Florida Department of Corrections has moved forward quickly with an appeal of a circuit judge’s ruling last week that blocked a plan to privatize prison health services in the central and northern parts of the state.
The 1st District Court of Appeal received the department’s notice of appeal Thursday, two days after Leon County Circuit Judge John Cooper ruled that the Legislative Budget Commission overstepped its authority by approving the privatization plan, according to an online court docket.
The appeal is not a surprise — the department said it would challenge Cooper’s ruling. The prison-health privatization plan is highly controversial, with the American Federation of State County and Municipal Employees and the Florida Nursing Association leading a long-running legal fight to try to block it.
Jessie Drew Criswell

Mrs. Jessie Drew Criswell of Molino, was born March 27, 1925, in Lottie, to Jim and Ettie Drew. She passed from this world on December 10, 2012. She is preceded in death by her husband of 41 years, James Marshall Criswell. While her primary role in life was a homemaker, she worked for the State of Alabama in the 1930’s & 40’s on many fire towers in Baldwin and Escambia Counties.
She is survived by her three sons, Milton (Carlyn) Criswell of Molino, Billy (Janie) Criswell of McDavid and Gary (Tammie) Criswell of Molino; ten grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren and 2 great-great grandchildren.
Jessie has resided in Molino for the past 55 years and was a member of Highland Baptist Church. Over the years, she touched many lives through her work with vacation bible school and many other activities with her church and her ladies Sunday School class. She also volunteered at the now closed Molino Elementary School in the library, a job that she truly loved. She loved being around the children and was “Granny” to all. She also worked as a volunteer with the Council On Aging caring for the elderly who could no longer care for themselves. She was also a recipient of this same care in her latter days.
Many thanks to Mrs. Mary and Mrs. Eleanor for the care they gave to our mother. Also, many thanks to the home health care nurses and Covenant Hospice who provided such comforting care.
Visitation will be held at Faith Chapel North on Wednesday, December 12, 2012, from 5 p.m. until 8 p.m.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, December 13, 2012, at Highland Baptist Church with visitation one hour prior to the service.
Faith Chapel Funeral Home North is in charge of arrangements.
Architect Picked To Design New $16.5 Million Ernest Ward Middle Campus

An architectural design firm has been picked to design a new state of the art, $16.5 million Ernest Ward Middle School in Walnut Hill.
The bid is set to be awarded to Sam Marshall Architects of Pensacola in the total amount of $1,389,002. The bid includes architectural and engineer fees of $826,800, plus just over half million for other items like interior design and consultants for a various parts of the project.
Four other companies submitted were considered for the project — DAG Architects, Quina Grundhoefer Architects, Bullock Tice Associates and Heffernan Holland Morgan.
A nine-member committee ranked the five firms in order of preference following presentations and interviews with each company. Sam Marshall Architects was the first choice of seven committee members and the second ranked choice from two members.
Once a contract is officially approved by the Escambia County School Board later this month, Sam Marshall Architects will go to work designing the 600-student building. That process will including meeting with an advisory committee at Ernest Ward that will provide input into the design process, down to the colors of walls and floors.
After the building design is approved, the next major phase of the project will be the selection of a builder.
Escambia County School Superintendent Malcolm Thomas said recently he expects the new Ernest Ward will open in August 2015.
Students will be on site during the construction of the new school. Once the new building is complete, most of the current building will be torn down, and portables and modular buildings currently on the campus will be removed. The current administration building is slated to become a maintenance facility.

Chiefs Plan State Championship Celebration

The Northview Chiefs are planning a state championship ceremony for Saturday night.
The public is invited to attend the event in the school gym beginning about 6 p.m. Certificates of appreciation will be presented, and the state champion Chiefs will sign t-shirts. At 7 p.m., the Class 1A state championship game will be played in the gym on a large inflatable screen.
Bleacher seating will be available. Those that wish to bring a lawn chair to watch the game from floor should bring a beach towel or mat to go under the chair as to prevent damage to the gym floor.
Tate High Student To Represent Florida In U.S. Senate Program

Tate High School senior Amy Sapp has been selected as one of only two students to represent Florida in the U.S. Senate Youth Program.
The program recognizes students for their academic, leadership and public service accomplishments. Sapp will receive a $5,000 scholarship and a trip to Washington D.C. as part of the Washington Week program.
In Washington, Sapp will meet with high level government officials and participate in a wide variety of experiences. She was selected as part of an interview process conducted by the Florida Law Related Education Association Inc. with the assistance of both U.S. Senate offices and the Florida Department of Education.
Sapp is also on the Mock Trial for Tate High School and was named as one of the top attorneys in the nation at the National Mock Trial Competition last May.

Molino Christmas Parade Set For Saturday

The 10th annual Molino Christmas Parade will be held this Saturday.
The parade will begin at 11 a.m. at the west end of Crabtree Church Road and will end at the Molino Ballpark where Santa will be waiting to visit with all the good little boys and girls.
Entry fees are $25 for vehicles’ $15 for motorcycles, tractors and golf carts; and $10 for horses. No 4-wheelers or go-carts are allowed. Preregister now at Fran’s Diner or on the day of the parade. Entrants need to be in line at the parade start by 10 a.m.
All proceeds will go directly toward helping needy children in the Molino community during the Christmas season. Donations such as toys and non-perishable food items can be dropped off at Fran’s Diner in advance of the parade.

Video: Northview Chiefs Say ‘Thank You’ For Support

It took the work — and financial contributions — of scores of individuals and businesses for the Northview Chiefs to travel to Orlando last Friday night in order to win the Class 1A state football championship.
