Gulf Breeze Downs Northview

September 29, 2012

The 1A Northview Chiefs were outsized, outnumbered and outscored Friday night as they took on the 5A Gulf Breeze Dolphins. The Dolphins defeated the Chiefs 44-20 in Gulf Breeze, but Northview head coach Sid Wheatley said his Chiefs were never really outdone.

“I appreciate the way our kids fought; they fought to the end. They were a good football team tonight.” he said.

In the end, the outright advantages for the Dolphins proved to be just a little too much for the Chiefs.

“They controlled the line of scrimmage. They are big, and they are physical too. We knew they were, and we knew that we had our hands full,” he said.

The Northview Chiefs, ranked number one in the state in 1A, were the first to score with 10:11 on the clock in the first quarter. Stetson Nash returned an interception 40 yards and Kevin Vaughan split the uprights on the kick for a 7-0 lead for the Chiefs.

Gulf Breeze then scored in the first with a 10-yard run from Chandler Foxworth and a good kick, 7-7 headed into the second quarter.

The Dolphins increased their advantage to 21-7, but the Chiefs were not done in the first half. Northview made it 21-14 Gulf Breeze on a one yard touchdown from Roderick Woods and a good Vaughan kick headed into halftime.

Woods added a one-yard touchdown in the third. A missed kick from Vaughan left the Chiefs down by one, 21-20.

But the Dolphins found their momentum, cruising to a 44-20 win with touchdowns of 63 and 11 yards, a quarterback sack in the end zone and a recovered fumble in the end zone.

“I thought we fought; I don’t think we packed it in at all. We went 21-14 at half time and we nearly tied in the third quarter,” Wheatley said. “They got their momentum back, and we were not able to answer from there.”

The Northview Chiefs (2-2) will play their first district game of the season next Friday night as they host the Jay Royals.

Century Set To Approve New Law To Scale Back Fence Heights

September 29, 2012

The Town of Century is set to approve a plan Monday for cutting back the height of fences allowed in front yards around the town — a plan that is a mix of Century’s current code and regulations that are already in place in the unincorporated areas of Escambia County.

The Century Town Council will hold a final public hearing and vote on an ordinance Monday night that would adopt Escambia County’s current standards that limit the height of a solid fence in front of a single family residence to three feet and a chain link or other transparent fence to a four foot height. The fence height for a corner lot would be limited to two feet as to not obstruct the view of traffic. For the purposes of the ordinance, the height of a hedge or shrubbery will be regulated as a solid fence.

Fences in the side, or rear yard of a home may not exceed eight feet, which is no change from Century’s current restrictions.

If adopted, the new fence law becomes effective immediately. To read the complete proposed ordinance, click here.

Mayor Freddie McCall said residents with existing fences that violate the new ordinance, if passed, can ask the town council for a variance.

“We need to make sure we treat everybody fairly,” council members Sandra McMurray Jackson said at a recent council meeting. “We’ve just got be sure that we don’t have anything to come back and slap us in the face…everybody that has got a high fence in front of their house is going to think that my fence is just like his (the one approved for a variance).”

September 29, 2012

An Escambia County woman has been sentenced to death for the 2010 fatal beating and burning of a 19-year old woman.

Tina Lasonya Brown, 42, was convicted in June for the death of Audreanna Zimmerman, 19, in March 2010. Zimmerman was beaten and burned in an Ensley field; she died 16 days after the attack.

Judge Gary Bergosh sentenced Brown to death. In June, it took a jury only about an hour to return a first degree murder conviction against Brown and recommend the death penalty.

Brown’s 19-year old daughter, Britnee Miller, has also pleaded guilty to first degree murder and is awaiting sentencing. Miller was a minor at the time of the murder cannot be sentenced to life in prison under a recent ruling from the Supreme Court.

Heather Lee, another co-defendant, was sentenced to 25 years in prison for her part in Zimmerman’s murder.

Rabid Raccoon Found Near Atmore

September 28, 2012

A raccoon in Escambia County, Ala., has tested positive for rabies.

The discovery of the rabid raccoon in Escambia County has prompted health department officials to warn area residents to have their pets immunized and to avoid handling wildlife and stray animals.

“Vaccination of domestic dogs and cats against rabies remains the best method of providing a protective buffer between wildlife rabies and humans.  State law requires that dogs and cats three months of age and older be vaccinated for rabies annually,” said Environmentalist Jason Gurganus of the Escambia County (Ala.) Health Department.

The health department said rccoons, bats, foxes and skunks are most often responsible for transmitting the virus to domesticated animals and humans. The public should report any known or suspected exposure to wildlife to the Escambia County (Ala.) Health Department at (251) 368-9188.
