School Library Employee Arrested On Child Cruelty Charges

December 21, 2012

A part-time school library assistant was arrested Thursday on multiple child abuse charges.

Escambia County Sheriff’s investigators arrested Dorothea R. Vega, 59, for domestic violence charges including battery, torturing a child, caging a child and cruelty toward child act that could result in physical mental injury. She was booked into the Escambia County Jail without bond.

Investigators learned that the victim had been hit by numerous household objects and made to take prescription medications in an effort to control the child’s behavior. During the investigation deputies went to the home where they found alarms on the door of the child’s room. The child was made to stay in the room, unless she was doing chores. Deputies said if the alarm sounded the child was beaten by Vega.

The living conditions were found to be deplorable, investigators said. Deputies said the child was not always permitted to eat or take a bath and would sometimes use a school’s restroom to bathe in.

The Sheriff’s Office said Vega was arrested at Ensley Elementary School where she works as a library assistant.

So, I guess Barbara deserves a gun, even though she stated “She should be shot….period….end of story”. And I guess that this sex offender deserves a gun too, I mean it is our second amendment right. See how silly all this gun control talk sounds. Not everyone deserves or should they have the right to own a gun. Matt for gun control. And I know some of you will say, “It’s our right.” It is your right, to keep it in your house and defend your home. Not ride around killing other people just for the heck of it.

she is married. Is her husband going to charged? How could he not know what was going on in this house?

@Lin I’m sorry but you are wrong. I have personally witness people that grew up in loving homes, given every opportunity, and still turn out to be an abusive butt hole. Their parents never believed in “corporal punishment” (which is where “I” believe they went wrong) yet they couldn’t stop beating their own child!

Some people are just wired wrong.

It does not matter if she was abused as a kid. There is help out there for everyone. I hope she gets the max!

the underdog in this situation was the child, and the only one doing the kickin was miss vega… may she enjoy her time in lock up…and may jesus help this poor child through everything she has encountered..life is hard enough without more of this stuff!!!

@cantonment mom… if I could like your statement I would.. Why make up excuses for these people. If they had a bad childhood wouldn’t that make them want a better one for their own? Or if your going to treat a child this way, why have one? I in no way feel sorry for this women, she deserves everything that is coming to her. That poor child could have had a better life, if you can support a child put them up for adoption… so many people out in this world can’t have children themselves and could have given her a better life.. But yes some are too quick to judge, we don’t know the whole situation. We only know what we hear on the TV and on websites. Its still sad for this poor girl.

I for one am scared because this women worked at a school with other children.. what if she had acted out on one of them? I’m glad this has come to a end and no one else can be hurt by her.

#Lin…I think people are SICK AND TIRED of the excuses for people’s behavior. At some point people have to take responsibility for their actions and quit blaming everyone else for their sick behavior. Yes, abuse does cycle, but there are just as many people who were abused as children who do not abuse their own children. I am so sick of people blaming society, their parents, drugs, or the government for their behavior. NO MORE! She has been arrested, and if the charges are true, as I suspect they are, I hope she is locked up for years! Unfortunately, she will be given much better treatment than she ever gave that child.

Doesn’t anyone ever wonder what would make this women behave this way? she was probably very abused as a young person, this is a repetitive behavior for generations, she just doesn’t start that out of pure meanness. People please think, you are so quick to kick the underdog without knowing her history.I feel sorry for all involved.

    Wow….just wow…

Some people should not be allowed to have children, or be NEAR children.

Just pure mean !!!! I hope the judge gives her the max and finds this child a loving home where they can never be hurt again ! Sick and cruel lady just pure evil.

  16. Devoted Mom on December 21st, 2012 5:54 am

Was this ‘her’ child she was abusing? Her flesh and blood or not, she needs to be punished to the full extent. It’s just that the article didn’t say.

This low life should be done the same way in prison. I am praying for the child and hope she finds the love and compassion she deserves right here at Christmas.

Jail is too nice of a place for this woman.

  19. 429SCJ on December 21st, 2012 2:50 am

She needs help at the hands of a professional.

Hopefully that child will have a better Christmas with this evil locked away for the holidays.

Why are there so many people who abuse children in the school system or that care for children? Is it a mental thing?
She should be shot…..period…end of story…..
