Driver Critically Injured In Morning Cantonment Wreck

December 13, 2012

One person was seriously  injured in a single vehicle crash this morning in Cantonment.

The Florida Highway Patrol said 51-year old Shannon Muehe of Cantonment was eastbound on Muscogee Road about 8:10 a.m. when she traveled off the roadway and through a grassy area. Her 2007 Toyota Camry continued into a ditch and struck nearby railroad tracks. The Camry overturned and came to rest on an embankment on the opposite side of the railroad tracks. The vehicle was not struck by a train.

Muehe was trapped in the vehicle for about 15 minutes as firefighters used the Jaws of Life to free her. She was airlifted by LifeFlight to Sacred Heart Hospital in Pensacola.

The Florida Highway Patrol cited Muehe with careless driving.

The Cantonment, Molino and Ensley stations of Escambia Fire Rescue, Escambia County EMS and the Escambia County Sheriff’s Office also responded to the crash.

@Barbie, quit making assumptions. you do not know. from what she remembers, she was not speeding–she was looking for a road, which is an act that requires one to SLOW DOWN. and how about thanking the paramedics or firefighters who are the ones who ACTUALLY saved her? and whoever it was who called 911. i’m personally thankful to those people.

Yes Century I hope so too!

Well, I for one am waiting on a roll over right here in Century on Hecker Rd. and Mayo Street. The curve is banked wrong and I have seen many cars come around the small curve and be in the opposite lane when they get straight again. I have begged the deputy’s to sit in a drive way and watch how fast the cars come and go through Hecker. BUT they are always over on Front Street sitting at the drive way for the old plant at the railroad. I guess it will take a “ROLL OVER” on Hecker for them to believe anyone who lives in the area. There are small children in the neighbourhood also. I just hope it doesn’t come to a small child having to get hit by a car for them to do anything about it.

“It’s easier to roll vehicles like trucks and SUVs because they have high centers of gravity. (That’s why I was surprised when the Sheriff’s Department started buying them.)”

    David,
The Tahoe’s the Sheriff’s department is purchasing is a modified version of what you’re typical SUV driver owns. It has a special suspension package and a lower stance to accommodate for it’s high center of gravity found in normal production models. Actually, it handles quite well.

Ford killed the Crown Vic program in 2010. so that limited the availability for a full frame, rear wheel drive replacement. The FHP has adopted the new Dodge Chargers, and the County has went with the Chevy Tahoe’s because they are offered considerably cheaper than Chargers.
Escambia County decided to keep a full frame, rear wheel drive, V-8 powered platform.
The City of Pensacola, as well as Santa Rosa County has adopted the Chevy Impala, which is of uni-body construction, front wheel drive and V-6 powered for replacement of the beloved and common Crown Vic.

Yes, this is a bad situation. At this point she cannot even remember what happened. We do not have all of the facts. But let me assure you that my mother, a retired LCDR of the Navy, is not a “careless driver” (she’s not a “careless” anything). Please try to refrain from lumping this accident in with all of the teenagers who’ve driven off the road recently because they’re too selfish to put down their cellphones and act like responsible human beings.
And to those of you who expressed concern: Thank you, I believe she is going to be okay.

It’s easier to roll vehicles like trucks and SUVs because they have high centers of gravity. (That’s why I was surprised when the Sheriff’s Department started buying them.) 2007 model Camrys are wide bodied sedans so it looks like they would be harder to roll — harder but not impossible.

    David hoping she’s okay

sonors, what “you have come to believe” doesn’t negate simple physics. A 3-4000 lb vehicle moving at even a moderate speed can roll over very easily, particularly when it hits a ditch followed by a railroad track. Quite literally, “go figure”.

@tanya Hmmm, I couldn’t have said it better

I was GOING UNDER the speed limit on Foshee road and flipped my truck so yes it is possable to do so WHEN YOU REACT INCORRECTLY. I hope this young lady is going to be alright. This is a bad situation.

  12. sonors on December 13th, 2012 10:29 am

I have come to believe that it is impossible to have a wreck out here in our area WITHOUT rolling over. i tend to believe that if you are doing the speed limit and even 5 miles over it, that you probably dont have sufficient inertia to ” Roll over”, and yet,,,SO often, thats what we have out here….. ONE CAR ROLL OVERS,,,, go figure,,,,,,,,

…another one? hope she gets better soon…but like i said before, there sure seems like there are a lot of these types of accidents out there in that neck of the woods…
