Corrections Department Appeals Prison Health Ruling
December 12, 2012
The Florida Department of Corrections has moved forward quickly with an appeal of a circuit judge’s ruling last week that blocked a plan to privatize prison health services in the central and northern parts of the state.
The 1st District Court of Appeal received the department’s notice of appeal Thursday, two days after Leon County Circuit Judge John Cooper ruled that the Legislative Budget Commission overstepped its authority by approving the privatization plan, according to an online court docket.
The appeal is not a surprise — the department said it would challenge Cooper’s ruling. The prison-health privatization plan is highly controversial, with the American Federation of State County and Municipal Employees and the Florida Nursing Association leading a long-running legal fight to try to block it.

Sorry that happened to you Katherine, thankfully a decent officer stepped in! My son, a FL-DOC inmate, almost died when his gallbladder ruptured. He declared a medical emergency & the DOC nurse on duty gave him Pepto-Bismol & told him if he was going to have a belly ache he should have stayed home with his Mommy. The current system is atrocious and a shame to the medical professionals who take pride in their vocation.
the health care in doc really needs to be revamped. i almost died there last year thanx to the care right now. by the time i got to jacksonville [hospital] i needed 4 pints of blood from internal bleeding. your body only holds 8 pints. told them over and over i was losing blood but was turned away. 5 times before anofficer stepped in and got me to the dr.saw several people die tht should’nt have thanx to doc drs and nurses. the health care could be better if in other hands besides doc. i was there. i know.
