Cell Phone Distraction Results In Wreck

December 13, 2012

Troopers say a Cantonment woman was distracted by her cell phone, resulting in single vehicle wreck this afternoon on Pine Forest Road.

The Florida Highway Patrol said 31-year old Devon White of Cantonment was southbound on Pine Forest Road approaching Graham Lane when her phone began to ring, and she attempted to answer it. White lost control, traveled across the center line and into a ditch where she collided with a fire hydrant, a stop sign and a small business sign. The accident resulted in about $8,000 in damage to her 1990 Buick, troopers said.

White received minor injuries and refused transported to the hospital. She was charged with careless driving, violation of a nonresident driver’s license and violation of a nonresident tag, according to the FHP.

Drivers license and tag fees have nothing to do with school taxes.

At $8,000 estimate repair. Consider that car totalled

About the $8,000 in damage to the 1990 sled.

That is the estaimated cost to repair it. All damaged vehicles will have repair costs. The estimate provided by the trooper was not an appraised value of the car — it was only an estimate to repair it.

Sounds to me like the state is trying to get as much money out of her as possible. The laws about her DL and tag are ridiculous.

We pay taxes in Fl. to support our schools ect! Come up to the state line area and see how many fl. residents go to Al. and get their tag, using some ones address or own a piece of property in al. They do not have the insurance in Al that they have to in Fl. Their is about as many al. tags coming to the schools in the north end as they are Fl tags. Are they paying school taxes?

    >>>Maybe she just moved here. Ever think of that? She’s NO criminal and accidents do happen. Mind your own business.

Hmm….maybe she *was* no criminal, but she was charged with three crimes today (of course, she’ll have her day in court, blah, blah).

And it is our business when she’s messing with a cell phone and causing her 3,500 pound car/lethal weapon to fly across and off the highway and destroy everything in its path. I live in the neighborhood, my child catches a bus near there. It’s very much my business.

$8000 damages probably include the damage to property; the fire hydrant, a stop sign and a small business sign.

    “The car isn’t worth $8000.”

    Well, maybe not NOW.

    $8000 damage to a 1990 Buick? The car isn’t worth $8000.

How do you do $8,000 worth of damage to a 1990 Buick? That’s a 22 year old vehicle. The whole car can’t be worth more than a couple thousand max.

Florida Statute 322 (Drivers License’s) reads as follows:

322.031 Nonresident; when license required.—(1) In every case in which a nonresident, except a nonresident migrant or seasonal farm worker as defined in s. 316.003(61), accepts employment or engages in any trade, profession, or occupation in this state or enters his or her children to be educated in the public schools of this state, such nonresident shall, within 30 days after the commencement of such employment or education, be required to obtain a Florida driver’s license if such nonresident operates a motor vehicle on the highways of this state. The spouse or dependent child of such nonresident shall also be required to obtain a Florida driver’s license within that 30-day period prior to operating a motor vehicle on the highways of this state.

If you work and live within the state of Florida following the 30th day you must get a Florida DL.

For those asking about the nonresident tag and DL charges — I don’t know the specifics in this incident, but that charge can result from living in Florida but using a tag and DL from another state. They are not traffic infractions — they are criminal offenses.

    Nonresident dl and tag?

  16. mick on December 13th, 2012 4:56 pm

Cellphones a necessary evil, think of the expense this has caused…injuries to the person, medical expenses, lost time at work, vehicle repair costs, possibly higher insurance rates, not t mention the mental anguish inflicted upon the victim and loved ones…use that brain that God gave you…the call can wait…

  17. Mike on December 13th, 2012 4:28 pm

VIolation of a nonresident driver’s license and violation of a nonresident tag, according to the FHP….

    What does that mean exactly?
