November 27, 2012

Police say an Atmore mother was drinking and passed out, dropping her 8-month old into a fire.

The Atmore Police Department said 26-year old Amanda Pugh of Atmore was drinking and standing by a fire outside her home in the 600 block of Bream Street just before 1 a.m. Saturday. Witnesses told police Pugh passed out, dropping her daughter into the fire.

The 8-month old suffered burns to both of her legs. She was transported by Atmore Ambulance to Atmore Community Hospital. She was transferred to the burn center at the USA Medical Center in Mobile by LifeFlight.

Pugh was arrested at the scene and charged with first degree assault and endangering the welfare of a child. She was booked into the Escambia County Detention Center in Brewton with bond set at $15,000.  The case is also under investigation by the Escambia County Department of Human Resources.

And people wonder why we don’t call CPS. Because CPS doesn’t do anything. I would go into that line of work if it weren’t for the people would didn’t do their jobs. I can’t doit because I know I would beat the living bejeebus out people like this. I wouldn’t wait for the Law.

    Puddin,

Call the police if its as serious as you say. If they see marks or bruises, they will remove the child. I don’t trust CPS either. Too many innocent families are tormented and not enough legitimate complaints are investigated.

  8. chris1 on November 28th, 2012 7:04 pm

    Bail should be $150,000
Take the child away for a month.

  9. Kelly Garrett on November 28th, 2012 2:01 pm

Who is the judge who set the bond at $15,000?? He should be removed. What a joke. This evil woman should be locked up for a long time.

I have never been able to understand why these party girls decide to have children in the first place? You would think that a baby would impede upon such a lifestyle. I guess when you are hungover it is difficult to remember to take you contraceptive.
Hope the baby gets better real soon and a good home finds it. Incredible.

Its a shame what some parents do these days. Why in the world was an 8 month old bababy awake and outside at 1am if the mother was drinking? She should have found someone to watch thr child b4 she started drinking if the child was awake!! Irresponsible people dont deserve children!

  13. Jane on November 28th, 2012 3:01 am

This is what happens when Child Services doesn’t have the authority to remove a small helpless child from a bad situation…there are many many cases like this out there. And many many people who are adopting children from overseas because they can’t have children and it takes so very long and so much paperwork to get one here! Something needs to change.

  14. mercyme on November 27th, 2012 8:05 pm

Where is the baby’s daddy? Maybe DHR can find the child a loving and SAFE home with both parents present. Even if it is becoming increasingly unpopular and considered old-fashioned, a baby still needs a Mama AND a Daddy.

  15. Jonathan on November 27th, 2012 7:57 pm

This is why they should test you (IQ testing that is) before allowing you to reproduce.I mean what parent thinks 1 am baby outside near a fire while drinking is a good idea..

  16. Astounded on November 27th, 2012 7:24 pm

And I bet she knew how to prevent pregnancy. I’m praying for the baby. All these bad things – they’re not just on the news anymore – bad things are happening right here at home. So, so, sad. I hope they take this child away from her and I wish the mother could be sterilized. Women like this one – they don’t deserve to the honor of being a mother!

  17. puddin on November 27th, 2012 7:05 pm

That poor baby. Prayers for her and for her mom to get straight. Swift kick aimed at the backsides of the witnesses for not seeing this situation and putting a stop to it before this happened. Child protective services are a joke. I know a couple who were beating a 2, then 3, then 4 year old and allowed an adult male to molest the child. CPS was called repeatedly by me, and several others. I saw the tear in the childs behind, and the welts from the switch personally. CPS investigated and decided that the parent should go to anger management classes. Period. Didnt make him go, didnt follow up. I have the womans name and plan to hold her criminally liable if anything else happens to this sweet boy. I would be ashamed to cash my paycheck if I acted like this. CPS needs a major overhaul, starting with the director. Oh, wont put me real name on here because I know I would sufder retaliation through my family members.

Human kind never cease to amaze me.

  19. Val on November 27th, 2012 5:57 pm

I agree with so many of you! These children are our future! I understand this is the SECOND time children services have been involved? Reminds me of the poor children that burned in the fire after children services were already called out a few days before their death! These so called people that work for children services should be charged as well in my opinion! Such a horrible story! Praying for this innocent child!

It is obvious the mother has a problem..pray for the baby…but she needs prayer too
that she will turn from her ways and look to our LORD Jesus….only he can give her the help she really needs…he can also forgive her of her past

Careless, Reckless, and drunk, having a small baby out at 0100 hours, Sad for the little baby that a mother would be so reckless, drunk she probally did not know the baby was even burned. This baby will suffer these scars for life. I have seen this happen on one other occasion. The mother needs help. The baby will get the best care available.

  22. 429SCJ on November 27th, 2012 4:23 pm

This is a bad thing to happen to a child. I pray this child makes a full speedy recovery and is not badly scarred.

For those of you that are concerned for this child’s future safety I say, no Judge in her/his right mind is going to return custody of a child to a mother, who in a drunken condition, passes out and drops her baby in a fire. It is just not going to happen, even in this day and age.

  23. gus on November 27th, 2012 3:15 pm

Everyone knows what the mother should not have been doing. I just have one question. There were witnesses, so there were other people outside around the fire. Why/How did these witnesses/people let her hold the baby if she was that drunk and why did they let her get that close to the fire with her baby?

  24. a ellis on November 27th, 2012 2:31 pm

This is a shame. Once again our children are the ones without the protection. This poor child had already gone through one hurtful event and yet she was placed once again with the mother, to have another horrific experience happen. Our world is clearly messed up. Our children are our future and yet they seem to have the least protection from our government. Even our animals are protected more. It just makes me sick to death at what some of these children go through and yet their abusers either get a slap on the wrist or less.

  25. praying for baby and mother on November 27th, 2012 12:22 pm

Yesss…pray for the mother too…i believe the child will be cared for..(scar)ed and scared im sure but thx GOD she’s still alive..this mother on the other hand needs JESUS.He is the only answer that can change this woman..for her to consume that much alchol..she was trying to forget something..my heart bleeds for this woman..she needs help..where are the churches and pastors…this monster needs to be delt with..so stop all the finger pointing and lets pray that GOD heal this woman..when did we get perfect (no mistakes)..judge not lest thee be judged ..

  26. JF on November 27th, 2012 12:17 pm

The baby is no longer with the mother…..praying for this sweet angel!!

  27. horrified on November 27th, 2012 11:05 am

The baby was 6 months old and DHR let her keep the baby after the first time she recklessly hurt her when she was 2 months old. Maybe this time they won’t make the same mistake.

  28. LeeAnna McCall on November 27th, 2012 10:55 am

I dont understand how or why the charges are not more… That baby is a victim twice in my opinion… Sad!!!

SERIOUSLY?!?! this should have never happened!! if you are gona drink dont drink to that point!! be a mother and take care of your baby first! this poor baby is gona suffer for a long time because of stupidity.. anothe thing it has been cold for a wwek or more why have a child in that weather? this person can not be defended for what she did..it may have been an “accident” but it was because of her stupidity.. poor baby i pray she never has to be with this careless person ever again!! dear god help this baby recover!!

  32. klt on November 27th, 2012 10:16 am

OMG! This is sooo sad! I hope and pray that baby gets better soon and that God eases her pain! what kind of mama does something like this?! this is soo sad! poor baby!!

  33. Toni on November 27th, 2012 10:07 am

Who drinks like that while holding their baby?!?! Especially by a fire?? That is just ridiculous. 26 years old? She should know better.

It’s one thing to have a glass a wine or a beer at dinner or once the baby is put to bed, but why would one even considering binge drinking while their child is in their care? Be responsible, people.

As a new mom, I would never even CONSIDER doing anything like that. Partying is just not that important now that there is a little one for me to love and care for. I can’t even fathom.

  34. heavydutydug on November 27th, 2012 10:06 am

THIS WOMAN SHOULD HAVE HER CHILD TAKEN FROM HER! AND THEN, DROPPED INTO A FIRE, SO THAT SHE CAN EXPERIENCE WHAT SHE DONE TO HER ON CHILD.

  35. River on November 27th, 2012 10:06 am

OMG! Why didn’t she put the baby to bed first and of course have someone watch them if she was going to be drinking?? NO EXCUSE!!

  36. Proud mommy on November 27th, 2012 10:04 am

This horriable….what kind of mother would drink & while taking care of a infinite… Praying for that set baby
