Three Escambia County Commissioners Sworn Into Office
November 21, 2012
Three commissioners — two newly elected and one returning — were sworn into office Tuesday morning.
Newly elected District 5 Commissioner Steven Barry took office after a 70-percent to 30-percent win over Packy Mitchell in the general election and a narrow 41 to 38 percent primary win over Sam Archer in a five person race.
“I am very excited about the opportunity to serve the community that I love. I know that it comes with a great deal of responsibility as well, but I am prepared to face that and help the entire county move forward,” Barry said after taking the oath of office from Judge John Simon.
In District 3, newly elected Lumon May took office. He received 71 percent of the general election vote to Tiffany Washington’s 21 percent. He received 69 percent of the primary election vote.
“First, give it unto God who allowed for this opportunity to happen,” May said Tuesday morning, thanking family, campaign staff and supporters for his election. “I am humbled today to be in a position to serve, and I think service means humility…I will serve, advocate, for those who have not had a voice. Thank you for trusting me.”
Commissioner Wilson Robertson was sworn into the District 1 seat after winning re-election. His win was narrow — just 32 votes — in the primary election over Jesse Casey. In the general election, he took 65 percent of the vote to 35 percent for Bobby Spencer.
After being sworn into office by Judge Lacey Collier, Robertson offered typical appreciation to family and supporters as he launched a 10-minute speech in which he called the media the “worst enemy” of Escambia County and taking particular aim at the Pensacola News Journal. Also at Tuesday’s Installation Meeting, a new chairman and vice-chairman were named for the commission under a standing rotation policy. Gene Valentino was named commission chairman, and May was name vice-chairman.

I hope Mr.Barry thinks about the northern end of county when he gets the chance! Us paying for E-Cat, a higher gas tax, ect…We would like you go out in our area to see what we need and get out of Pensacole once in awhile. Most of us are friendly and will talk to you without the press.
If you think potholes are the main problem you are just blind public safety is very bad in dist 5 the closest ambulance to dist 5 is in Ensley then century big gap there but just worry about your potholes while houses burn and people die just because it don’t make the news don’t mean it’s not happening but most of the public don’t care until its there family or its to late but let’s fix those potholes Stupidity!!!!!!
Mr. Barry,
Please do what is best for our district. All of the other commissioners are investing in Pensacola.
Wilson, if you would do what’s right instead of what’s wrong, you wouldn’t care about our media. Shame on you! Enjoy your last 4.
Lets look for this new board to fire Touart before he can even get his grubby little fingers in the coffers and kill the gas tax!
I think and hope that Steve Barry will bring a fresh youthful perspective to the position of CC dist V. He and his wife make a nice couple and may help to serve as a template and inspiration for their peer/age group.
One of the greatest problems we face in district V is potholes. I would ask you Commissioner Barry to tour the roads of your district as there is much beautiful scenery and a lot of potholes.
Well maintained roadways will cove a multitude of sins and will keep us voters happy.
Don’t forget the reflectors on those dangerous curves, please sir.

Mr. Robertson…it appears the “worst enemy” of Escambia County….are the County Commissioners…
Go fricking figure!
So proud to have Steven Barry as my county commissioner. He will do a great job.
Nothing will change, at least not for the better.
This county has always been one of the most corrupt in the state. We need to vote them all out every time until they get the message. They have not brought a good paying job to this county in 60 years.
Drive across the Mobile bayway and look at their skyline, then look a pensacola.
All they can do is Tax. This has always been a one horse town.
It’s trickle down Socialism. From the Feds to the State to the County.
I eagerly await their vote to remove the new gas tax!!!
Let’s hope they have a better perspective on things than the old County Commissioners…a county-wide perspective and not just for Pensacola.
