Frequently Incarcerated Century Man Arrested Again

October 2, 2012

A Century man with a lengthy arrest history was taken into custody again on new charges.

Ronald Berlan Newton, 51,  was charged with trespassing and released from the Escambia County Jail on a $2,000 bond.

A female victim told the Escambia County Sheriff’s Office that Newton had been following her, showing up at her work and at her house. When Newton arrived at her residence at the Camellia Garden Apartments on Freedom Road in Century, the victim called deputies.

Newton had previously been warned by law enforcement not to trespass on the property, according to an arrest report.

Newton was arrested on September 9 and charged with aggravated assault before being released from jail on a $25,000 bond.

He allegedly threatened his 41-year old brother with a steak knife after the brother asked him to turn down his stereo inside their mother’s home on North Century Boulevard. As the brother was speaking with an Escambia County Sheriff’s Office deputy, an irate Newton advanced toward the brother with the knife. The Sheriff’s deputy was forced to stand between the two before taking Newton into custody, according to an arrest report.

Newton was released from state prison in April 2012 after completing a 22 month sentence for stalking after being arrested more than a dozen times in a year. Newton was first found incompetent and remanded into the custody of the Florida Department of Children and Families for evaluation, but was later found competent to stand trial.

His arrests since 2007, according to court records, included a long list of charges that were dropped or dismissed included aggravated assault, criminal mischief, battery, lewd and lascivious behavior victim under 18, indecent exposure, disorderly conduct and contempt of court.

@Sane—Not to beat a dead horse, but his bond was $25,000.(sorry, I never studied rhetorics)

I just hope he can get his voter rights restored…:) Nothing will be done if they keep dropping the charges…somebody take a stand and either lock him up or commit him for mental illness. Just get him off the streets before he kills someone.

    REGARDING:
“Do you informed people know that a baker act only last 72 hours? “

The examination can only last up to 72 hours. The recommendation following that examination could have several outcomes:

1 “the release of the individual to the community (or other community placement),

2 “a petition for involuntary inpatient placement (what some call civil commitment),

3 “involuntary outpatient placement (what some call outpatient commitment or assisted treatment orders),

4 “or voluntary treatment (if the person is competent to consent to voluntary treatment and consents to voluntary treatment). ”

For his own safety, please give careful consideration to number 2 above.

    David for troubled souls
    and safe people

this case shows just how broken our system really is.
no one wants to address the real issue and treat the problem. someone is going to get seriously hurt or killed if nothing is done about this man.

Do you informed people know that a baker act only last 72 hours? This is a classic case of your government at work!. This happened to this man when he was in service. Now it is not their problem. The courts don’t care. Kick the problem to someone else and long as they don’t have to be bothered. VA is a joke. It does not take a rocket scientist to see that this man needs L-O-N-G term treatment. Unfortunately nothing will be done until someone get hurts. Then someone SHOULD have to pay. The Courts, VA. His family have tried everything that they possible could do. The answers they get is he is a grown adult. A sick grown man.

Someone made mention that this man isnt broke fat from it. Wondering why the family cannot baker act him his crazy record speaks for its self. What is wrong with the system we have people sitting in jail with less of a record than this man

    @Rick,
I’m betting the bond is cheaper than the meds. $2,000 bond = $200 to get out. Either way, it was a rhetorical statement.

This is just crazy. How can they keep letting this man out. Wonder how the judge who keeps letting him out is gonna feel when this man really hurts someone bad or even kills someone. They need to lock this man up and throw away the key. I understand he may not be mentally stable but if hes not lock him up in a mental hospital. Our government and judicial system is getting crazy. Makes you afraid to step out on the streets.

What are they waiting for a murder charge !

  11. fyi on October 2nd, 2012 8:20 am

The family has done all they can to get him commited its the system so when he either hurts someone or someone hurts him dont blame the family..he gets meds doesnt take them the system is messed up if it had been you or I we would have been locked up

Each time this is posted and each time i ask why isnt he in a government mental health program? Clearly he has mental issues and doesnt need jail, but mental help.

  14. Rick on October 2nd, 2012 7:44 am

@Sane American__ Can’t afford meds?? Who is posting his bond, then??

  15. Sane American on October 2nd, 2012 7:35 am

Crazy is the moron that found him competent to stand trial. This guy clearly needs some type of meds, but the state doesn’t want to pay for it and the family probably can’t afford it, and then who’s to say he’d remember to take them. Oh well, we’ll just keep seeing him regularly in the news.

  16. Janet on October 2nd, 2012 6:34 am

This is getting to be too much now! His face is in the news more then any politician campaining. What gives with this and why, WHY do they keep letting him run the streets. This is as crazy as he is!!!!
