Flomaton Woman Dies Following Century Traffic Crash

October 10, 2012

One person had died as the result of a two vehicle wreck this morning in Century.

The Florida Highway Patrol said 50-year old Sara R. Daw of Flomaton was southbound on Highway 29 at Hudson Hill Road when she stopped for a school bus that stopped in the northbound lanes to pick up children.  James A. Richburg, 52,of Brewton was southbound  in a 2008 GMC Sierra pickup on Highway 29 when he failed to stop and rear-ended Daw’s 2001 Chevrolet  pickup.

Daw was transported by Escambia County EMS to Jay Hospital where she was later pronounced deceased. Richburg received only minor injuries.

Charges against Richburg are pending a traffic homicide investigation, according to the FHP.

@ Vance….. you should maybe apply to the Florida Highway Patrol, as it seems to me that you would not have to go thru the hundreds of hours of investigation tactics it takes for one to become a traffic homicide investigator. Certainly you should visit http://auto.howstuffworks.com/car-driving-safety/accidents-hazardous-conditions/crash-test2.htm
to take a look at the impacts and damage caused by (you guessed it) 35 mph vehicle crashes. In a recent study conducted by IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety) it is estimated that with a 33% increase in vehicle weight, it increases the likelyhood of death in the opposite vehicle 8 times that of a vehicle of the same weight.
So…. All that I am asking for everyone involved is for you to keep your assumptions to yourself because BOTH of these families are hurt. No one any worse that the Daw’s..

Woody, Nothing can stop the pain from the loss of a Mother. It is a pain like no other. Find strength in the Lord, family and friends. Find comfort knowing that she is free from pain and at peace. Your Mom will always be with you.

    God BLess all those involved….

This accident was terrible. I was heading north when I came upon the traffic stopage for the accident. There is absolutely no way that this kind of damage would have happened if the 2nd vehicle was observing the speed limit of 35 mph.

I am so sorry to have to read this and find out about such a tragedy.
Sara was a very caring and concerned even for the least of people. She could
never make a difference in the quality or class of people and she often showed much kindness to me. I will pray for the family and life is short, as a vapor the word says. May God be a comfort at this time as well as the strength of the future days.

Sara was like a second mom to my children! That was their maw maw and I am deeply hurt that she is gone! To the Daw family…I love every one of you and I am SO SORRY about Sara! My sons are both devastated! And it is wrong to get on here when people just lost a loved one and say that she was wrong to stop for OUR CHILDREN when they were getting on the bus!

    To Woody
What a great person (Child of Christ) you must be to respond to others in the way that you have in this terrible time. My prayers and thoughts go out to you and your family, as well as the other person involved. Remember only those that know Christ can respond to such situations with love and kindness as you have.Truly an example for other Christians to follow. Others must remember also that satan is the author of all evil and confusion. Bad things have always happened to good people and will continue untill Christ comes to take his children home.

Regarding your comment MOLINO JIM MY MOM IS GONE I DONT APPREICIATE YOU SPECULATING WHAT HAPPENED OR WHAT COULD HAVE BEEN DIFFERENT. BUT IT HAPPENED. ONLY GOD KNOWS WHAT HAPPENED AND I WILL NOT QUESTION HIS WORK. I THANK ALL OF YOU FOR YOUR THOUGHTS AND PRAYERS. ONLY GOD HIMSELF HAS THE ROLL CALL WHEN ITS OUR TIME. ALWAYS REMEMBER YOU NEVER KNOW WHAT YOU HAVE UNTIL ITS TAKEN AWAY FROM YOU.

It is a paved median/turn lane, so stopping would have been in accordance with the law:

Traffic to stop for school bus. —

    316.172(2)

The driver of a vehicle upon a divided highway with an unpaved space of at least 5 feet, a raised median, or a physical barrier is not required to stop when traveling in the opposite direction of a school bus which is stopped in accordance with the provisions of this section

Sorry for all involved. I have one question–does 29 have a median at that location? If so she should not have stopped in the south bound lane for a north bound school bus. I tend to slow down when I see a school bus stopped even if I know I do not have to (but that’s just me). I normally stop for funerals by pull onto the shoulder of the road. But I’ve seen cars stop in the middle of a traffic lane, which is nothing but an invitation for a wreck. Be it legal or not to have to stop for a funeral (different states have different laws on this) I do not want to be rear ended, so I move to the shoulder. May the family try to find peace.
