Molino Man Charged With DUI After Wreck Near Highway 29, Highway 97

September 25, 2012

A Molino man was jailed for DUI following a mid-afternoon wreck Monday at the Tom Thumb in Molino.

Willie Dave McQueen, age 58 of Cedartown Road, was charged by the Florida Highway Patrol with DUI with property damage. He remained in the Escambia County Jail Monday night with bond set at $1,000.

McQueen was the driver of a Buick Park Avenue that apparently pulled into the path of a Honda in front of the Tom Thumb near the intersection of Highway 29 and Highway 97. The accident remains under investigation by the Florida Highway Patrol; their full report has not yet been released.

Escambia County EMS, the Molino Station of Escambia Fire Rescue and the Escambia County Sheriff’s Office also responded to the 2:15 p.m. crash.

doesn;t matter what you do. we are north of 9 mile road and it doesn’t matter to the south what happens this way. more dead better off for some thinkers.

    To JSCS:

“Saying that people will not obey the light is just not true. There are lights everywhere and mostly people do obey them.”

Most people follow the law at the intersection of 97 and 29 now too, that’s why there’s only an occasional accident. What would we gain with a traffic light that only “most” people would obey.

Never mind about the light and all the accidents……..drunk at 2:15 on a Monday afternoon????

“What happens when a 45 or 50 mph driver is at the head of the pack of cars waiting to make the left turn onto 97? I’ll tell you what will happen, for the 20+ miles to Atmore you are going to have cars passing cars at all legal spots and in some that aren’t.”

Not much different than it is now… ever wonder why there are so many wrecks on 97? Everyone says it’s the people going 90 trying to pass on curves but they always leave out the fact that they’re buried 6 deep in a line of 14+ cars going 43mph from Molino to Atmore (or vice versa.)

Start the petition, let us know where it is so we can begin signing it and MAYBE get some action started to get a redlight.
There have been too many accidents there and it will not get better until the traffic is controlled at this intersection.
Saying that people will not obey the light is just not true. There are lights everywhere and mostly people do obey them.
We have seen fatal accidents there and many, many ones not fatal but it will never get better until changes are made. The new turn lane is just one more distraction. Wasted money that will not help the accident problem.

Doesnt matter if there is a light or not if you are dealing with a drunk driver. This was the exact time that all the school buses and parents picked the kids up from Molino Park.

The intersection is bad bc not only are people in the intersection turning and going across, many cars going north turn left and do a u turn to get in the store which causes one more person sitting in the middle. It is a horrible intersection. Just takes people slowing down, watching all traffic all ways and NOT DRINKING AND DRIVING!!

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: all that a traffic light at that intersection would do is move the accidents further up route 97. What happens when a 45 or 50 mph driver is at the head of the pack of cars waiting to make the left turn onto 97? I’ll tell you what will happen, for the 20+ miles to Atmore you are going to have cars passing cars at all legal spots and in some that aren’t. The amount of accidents that a light would cause would be horrific.

All of this is not to mention that you pick the worst case accidents to further your misguided cause, when has a light ever stopped someone charged with DUI from running it???

My money is on your logic Richard.

Maybe a red light would at least slow some people down. There are always accidents at that intersection. Yes, I have talked to FDOT…they didn’t even know there was a school near there and they tried to tell me there had only been 27 accidents in a year there. We all know that there have been a lot more than that. Talk to any LEO who works at this end of the county. We are working our way up the line…have to start somewhere.

How is getting a red light going to stop people from drinking and driving?

  11. richard on September 25th, 2012 1:27 am

Yes, all of you calling for a traffic light at this intersection are correct.
Because every one knows that an intersection that has a traffic light has never seen an acident or and injury. And NO ONE has ever ran a traffic light. There is a 1000 foot on ramp to HW 29 south there that very few use. face it most people go through drivers ED in high School and never get any further driver education.
they are on ther cell phones or texting or eatting or a thousand other things.
a traffic light will not change complacency. and all the lights in the world will not stop some people from driving like they are walking through Walmart.
Drive defensively watch around you and pay attention to driving and nothing else.

Actually the people to talk to would be the FDOT. They handle the installation of red lights. But they’d have to spend at least $150K to do a study and even then it would still be a few years before anything happened. But I agree there needs to be one there. Good luck in trying, although I’m sure it’s been tried before.

Contact the county commissioner and have him tell everyone to stop at the stop sign. Will that work, yes! If you do not stop at the stop sign will you stop at the red light? NO!!!

  14. Wrong Way Driver on September 24th, 2012 4:22 pm

    >>Contact our new County Commissioner and ask for a light at this intersection.

That would be (1) impossible until after the November election and (2) a waste of time even then.

    (1) We have not elected a new county commissioner yet. Can’t count your chickens before they hatch.

    (2) Both Hwy 29 and Hwy 97 are state roads (really 29 is a federal hwy, but it’s “managed” by the state). Your county commissioner has no decision making power, so you are wasting your time talking to him.

  15. Jane on September 24th, 2012 4:13 pm

Contact our new County Commissioner and ask for a light at this intersection. Attend the Mid County Neighborhood Watch at 6:30pm at Aldersgate Church every 4th Monday of the month (yes, that is tonight)…they are trying to get a red light there. Make your voice heard!

  16. Jane on September 24th, 2012 4:10 pm

There are too many accidents at this intersection. We need a traffic light, especially since there is a school close by. What good is a turn lane if you have to watch 5 ways at once and there are people who speed through here at 70mph+.???

  17. t2 on September 24th, 2012 3:58 pm

Whenever I approach this intersection I slow down below the speed limit just because I fear someone t-boning me, while others are going well over 10 mph over the speed limit. It’s just a bad place no matter which way you are approaching either. And not sure a red light would actually solve anything, I believe most people would just run the red light. Drivers are getting way more crazy out there these days.

  18. grandjoy on September 24th, 2012 3:40 pm

When…when…what does it take to get a redlight put up at this intersection?
Deaths and numerous wrecks makes no difference to the County,State or who is in charge for needed redlights? Molino Park School is located just down the road, not counting thousands of people who travel this road, this is not a simple reason for a redlight? Come on tax payers get together, sign petitions what ever it takes, we need a redlight. We love our children and families who are in danger! So, do we just protest with signs at this corner until we get a redlight? What is the answer? Stop giving the excuse of unresponsible drivers!! WE NEED A RED LIGHT. This is the first major intersection with a school, entering Escambia County, with high speeders coming from the North! Flashing light is no help. RED means STOP!
