Perdido Man Dies In Flomaton Industrial Accident

September 26, 2012

A Perdido man was killed in an industrial accident this morning in Flomaton.

Authorities said 55-year old Joseph Wayne Odom was crushed by a piece of equipment while working at Advanced Recycling Center in the 27400 block of Highway 31 in Flomaton. He was pronounced deceased at the scene by Escambia County (Fla.) EMS.

The Escambia County (Ala.) Sheriff’s Office said Odom was working on a skid steer loader when hydraulic lines lost pressure causing the bucket to fall, pinning him underneath.

Odom was reportedly a longtime employee of the company.

The accident remains under investigation by the Escambia County (Ala.) Sheriff’s Office and the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA).

Th Friendship Volunteer Fire Department, Flomaton Fire Department and the Flomaton Police Department also responded.

My thoughts and prayers go out to his family. Unfortunately these kind of accidents occur frequently in the construction industry. I’ve been on a few jobs where it has happened. We get complacent, in a rush or simply just trust the equipment or operators, we have no control of. We are told on a regular basis ” don’t sit, stand, walk or drive under booms on cranes, loads, buckets, forks etc. I hate to hear or see tragic accidents like this. May God be with this family and comfort them.

This is just a freak accident. I know that he was doing his job the correct way. For some reason this accident was ment to happen and God is the only one to know why. I love you Joe and Im looking forward to see you in Heaven. Untill than keep you angle hands around all your family and protect us all. RIP JOE WITH ALL MY LOVE YOUR BABY BROTHER JERRY.

    REGARDING:
“hydraulic lines lost pressure causing the bucket to fall,”

Please remember to NOT get under loads in case of a failure. My father insisted we keep hands, feet and selves clear. It only saved our lives a few times, fingers several times.

    David wanting to avoid repeats
    and more loss and suffering
