Child’s Death Leads To Charges That Woman Beat Four Children Severely

September 23, 2012

An Escambia County woman was jailed  after one of her children died, leading police to discover that four of her children had been severely beaten.

Nicole Renee Henderson, 27, was arrested on four counts of aggravated child abuse after an investigation determined that she severely beat four children with a belt.

The investigation began after 3-year old  Markevion Hixon was taken by ambulance to Baptist Hospital Thursday night after he choked on a hot dog. Markevion died just after 7 p.m.

Henderson was Hixon’s legal guardian because his father, Demarcus Hixon, is in jail and his mother is deceased. Pensacola Police Department Detective Shannan Fortenberry said Henderson had been Markevion’s primary caregiver since September 3 when his father was arrested.

During an autopsy on Friday, a number of injuries unrelated to his death were found on Markevion’s body. The injuries were at various points of healing and were consistent with him being whipped with a belt or a cord, Fortenberry said.

Fortenberry said Markevion had injuries on his abdomen, legs, arms, chest, and back in addition to recent injuries on his backside that appeared to be friction type burns on both buttocks.

During an investigation Friday, it was determined three of four other children who live  with Henderson also had been beaten and had similar injuries to those found on Markevion. Henderson said she used a belt when disciplining the children.

Four children – ages two, four, five, and six – have been removed from the home by the Department of Children and Family Services. Police said the investigation is continuing, and more charges are possible.

Henderson remained in the Escambia County Jail Sunday without bond.

Just to let you know DCF presents the case to the court and the judge makes the decision as to who gets the custody of the children. If you want to blame someone blame the judge!

To me this is another example of Children and Family Services not doing their’
job. Why don’t they investigate these people before they place children or a handicapped person with them. I feel the whole system needs to be investigated, along with other agency’s here in the state of Fl.

Maybe she will get her tail severely whipped every day while in jail.

Very sad…but it happens too many times. I agree with Really Concerned. What a shame DCF is not “Really Concerned” about the ones in need.

Look her up on the Escambia County Clerk of Courts site. She has nine felony charges for violence and drugs since 2005. Some as recent as last year. She has a lengthy criminal record. What was she doing on the streets? And how the heck did she get custody of these kids with such a criminal history? What the heck is going on with the court system in Escambia County? This needs to be investigated.

For many many years, I have tried to have children and have never been able to have any. This story and other like it make me angry. (respectful word) My heart continue to break to think of the life that I could have given one or all five of these babies, if given the chance. I agree with M. Dixon. she should be beat every day with a belt, maybe and extention cord, since she is grown with a little tougher hide. I hope she get 25 to life for the little boy, 10-15 for each child not to be served concurrently. that should put her away for……EVER. And when she try to eat her hotdog everyday make sure she is abused so that she have to cry and can choke on it.

This is so sad for the children to go through. If the Dad will be out of jail soon, I’m sure him and the other children will be back together. DCSF is all about the parents (oops, I meant keeping the family together) even if it is NOT the best for the children and have been told by the rest of the family members. I wish they would really start listening and observing more, before we read more stories like this.

Didn’t anyone notice this was happening??? Neighbors….teachers??? This kind of senseless cruelty is something I would be up in somebody’s face about. This didn’t just start – it had to have been going on for awhile.

People, this kind of stuff IS your business – get involved – don’t turn away and say it isn’t any of your concern or that you don’t have time. Butt in, interfere, take responsibility. These dear little ones can’t defend themselves. I pray they will be ok.

This story is heartbreaking for the kids involved and really makes me angry at Ms. Henderson. As a former teacher of young children with severe emotional and behavior problems, I have seen the results of the type of living environment that these children are coming out of. They will need a lot of time, therapy and love to heal the emotional scars that this woman has caused. Therapy that, more than likely, the rest of society will be paying for. I hope for the children’s sake that they can find a safe home to go to. As for Ms. Henderson…I hope she lands in an overcrowded jail cell with aggressive, angry inmates who will treat her with the same “care” that she provided to the kids that she severely abused. May I please serve on her jury?

This is such a sad situation. This little boy is in a better place I am sure. But, the other children now will have to go through the system because of this woman. I believe her punishment should be, a whoopin’ with a belt everyday for 5 years at least.
I pray for these innocent children and the pain they suffered at this cruel woman’s hands.
