One Person Injured, Three Horses Killed In Wreck

August 3, 2012

One person received minor injuries when she slammed into three horses Thursday night in Davisville.

Delores A. Milam, age 27 of Atmore, was eastbound on West Highway 4 just west of Sandy Hollow Road about 9:30 p.m. when three horses ran into the path of her 2003 Chevrolet Trailblazer. The front of the SUV struck all three horses.

Milam was transported by ambulance to Atmore Community Hospital.

Two of the animals came to rest across West Highway 4. One horse was killed when it went over the hood of the SUV, crushing the windshield and roof the vehicle.  A second horse was euthanized due to the severity of injuries. The third horse managed to walk off the roadway but was also euthanized due to critical injuries.

The owner of the horses is unknown, according to the Florida Highway Patrol. The FHP is continuing their investigation into the accident.

The Walnut Hill Station of Escambia Fire Rescue, Atmore Ambulance and the Escambia County Sheriff’s Office also responded to the crash.

    >>>Has anyone considered that the owner has called the Sheriffs Department and that the authorities do know who owned them and that this article has not been updated?

This is a Florida Highway Patrol investigation (not Sheriff’s Office), and the article would be updated if the FHP provided updated info. They are not, however, likely to update the info unless they were to file charges.

I heard the one that went over the truck was over a 1,000 lbs. Horses don’t stay that heavy running wild. I hope whoever owns them comes forward (or is outed). Poor Dee doesn’t need anymore burdens. I’m glad you’re OK Dee, sorry all 3 horses were killed, and even more sorry that you’re having nightmares. :(

good point sean, and besides thats how my luck goes anyways, i seriously didnt expect anyone to own up to them even tho everyone has an idea whose they were, and they now no longer have any horses out front, only two little ones int he back. and i see her every sunday morning, but it is what it is, and i will pick myself up.

someone knows who owns the horses. any interested party can contact crime stoppers and collect the reward if they know who owns them!!!

Only “wild” horses are hit by cars just like only “stray” dogs bite people. Nobody is gonna own up to those animals

Just for everyones info, those were three wild horses out of the Byrneville band of wild horses that roam the countryside. No one owns wild horses, so maybe the government will stand good for it. LOL GLAD YOU ARE OKAY

Yes the horse owners are responsible for any damage done. Someone was trying to steal my horse, cut and removed fence and he got away and was hit by a truck. I had to pay the truck owner the value of the truck. Doesn’t matter how the horse got in the roadway I was told and I couldn’t prove who was trying to steal him even know I’m sure I know who it is. Good luck and I hope you have a speedy recovery.

Years ago in another state, my husband hit a show horse that was in the middle of the road at night. Although it was a VERY expensive horse and was euthanized, the owner had to replace our car due to a fencing law for animals in that state. Is there such a law in Alabama/Florida? If so, I hope you can locate the owner of the horses.
It’s very sad that these animals had to be euthanized, but you’ve lost your truck and suffered emotional damage through no fault of your own. The owner of the horses needs to be responsible at least for the physical damage they caused. The emotional damage you’ve suffered can only be repaired with time. Wishing better days ahead for you.

thanks buddy, you have no clue. this was the scariest accident ever tho. it breaks my heart bout those horses, and i know i am lucky to be alive but this is one night i dont wish on anyone. i am hurting, without a way of going, and at a complete loss. i cried more for the horses then anything, to the pain and the realization that i had totaled my truck kicked in! but our volunteer firemen are amazing, and the emts were great!
