Preteen Seriously Injured In Gonzalez Crash

July 26, 2012

A preteen was seriously injured in a single vehicle crash Thursday afternoon in Gonzalez.

According to the Florida Highway Patrol, 37-year old Melissa Ann Carver of Pensacola was eastbound on Old Chemstrand Road west of Mill Creek Trail in heavy rain when she lost control and ran off the road into the front yard of a home.  The right side of her 2002 GMC Envoy struck a large tree, seriously injuring backseat passenger Chance P. Durdan, 12.

Carver and a second passenger, 12-year old Steven R. Durdan, received minor injuries. All three were transported by ambulance to Sacred Heart Hospital in Pensacola.

Carver was cited for traveling too fast for conditions, according to the FHP.

The Cantonment, Molino and Ensley stations of Escambia Fire Rescue were dispatched to the accident, along with Escambia County EMS and the Escambia County Sheriff’s Office.

She did slow down. She was driving UNDER the speed limit. It was an accident. Hydroplaning happens in a flash and it’s hard, almost impossible, to control your car when it hydroplanes. All of her family and friends are praying for Chance to have a complete recovery.

I will be praying. I’m 36 now, but when I was 18 I hydroplaned and totaled a car. This is a scary experience. Trust in God what seems to bad God makes good. God bless this family and friends.

Please keep the family in your prayers, Chance is slowly getting better, Melissa is right by his side, she is a complete wreck over what has happen to her son, his twin brother Steven is a hero, he jumped out of the window and ran for help… Yes she hydroplaned the rain had stopped but the roads were still pretty wet from the down pour that had happened… She was going below the speed limit but still hydroplaned with the low profile tires its easy to do… And we all know you cant control your vehicle while hydroplaning….. This was an accident, and we have to keep our thoughts and prayers for the family that they all have no lasting issues, nightmares, or anything from this…. thank you to the neighbors, the off duty officers that came to help Melissa until the first responders and EMS got there….

I know this family, I have spent the last three days at the hospital. Chance is improving lil by lil, Melissa and Steven had minor injuries. And those low profile tires were on that vehicle when she bought it from frontier motors. So please dont judge a book by its cover especilly when your talking about my good friends who are watching their 12 yr old fight for his life. Only acceptable comments as post number one should have been “I’m praying for this family” Thanks- one really concerned friend.

My husband and I where the 1st two deputies on scene of the wreck. We where off duty and saw the people trapped in the vehicle so we jumped out to help. Mrs. Carver and I held her son’ s neck still until EMS got on scene. I would like to tell Mrs. Carver that she did a great job. She held her son’s hand and neck and we talked to him the whole time. Mrs. Carver, my husband and I are praying for Chance, thank you for your help!!

I personally know this family, she hit a water puddle && hydroplaned(she had absolutely no control over the vehicle.). Steven, the other preteen in the car, crawled out of the wreckage to get help! Chance is still in a coma but he is finally breathing on his own. His mother feels terrible for what has happened && the family is asking for prayers!

I’m just wondering…how can anyone claim that this lady was “speeding”?? Unless of course she stated that she was speeding in heavy rain with her two children with her? I DOUBT very seriously- a mother- would INTENTIONALLY drive fast in the rain KNOWING there is a possiblility she could wreck and harm her children. There have been SEVERAL careless wrecks recently and I have yet to hear of any other victims being given a citation for wreckless driving under certain driving conditions…come on lets get the REAL CRIMINALS out there go GREEN stop WASTING paper. #SHEESH

I went by this accident just after it happened. There was an officer that was already on the scene, he may be the officer that lives just down the road from where the accident happened.

But as I was traveling west on Old Chemstrand and then north on 29, I saw at least 5 cops that was traveling at extremely high rates of speed heading to the accident—–in the same conditions that she was cited for “driving too fast for conditions’

I know that if it was me or my family that was in an accident, I would want rescue workers to get there as quick as possible, but I would want them to make it there and not get in an accident themselves.

I’m glad the officers got there–wish it would have been safer– and hope the family recovers quickly

I live not too far from there and heard all the sirens. My grandparents saw all the emergency vehicles and called to check on my parents and I. I pray that that lil boy in serious condition will be okay. I try my best NOT to drive in the rain. If I have too I drive really slow sometimes ticking people off. But hey at least I am being safe.

Lord I pray that the 12 yr old and everyone else will be ok! Dear Heavenly Father please place your hand on them for a speedy recovery!

    When it rains SLOW DOWN!!!

Its obvious those are aftermarket wheels. I don’t think people realize how bad those low profile tires hydroplane, especially when they’re worn out.
