Man That Ran From Wreck Arrested

July 26, 2012

An Atmore man has been arrested in connection with a wreck that led to manhunt last week near Flomaton.

Steven Michael Campbell, Jr. of Canoe Road, was charged with leaving the scene of an accident.

A manhunt followed a July 16 wreck in the 3600 block of Old Atmore Road near Fowler lane, about two-tenths of  mile north of  the Alabama/Florida line. An manhunt followed because the driver, later identified as Campbell, reportedly suffered a severe head laceration.

Officials said Campbell lost control of of a Jeep Grand Cherokee and overturned several times before he jumped out and ran.

The Escambia County (Ala.) Sheriff’s Office, Flomaton Police Department, tracking dogs from Fountain Prison near Atmore, LifeFlight and the Flomaton Fire Department looked for the Campbell unsuccessfully for about an hour.

A witness that told police he saw a man run from the overturned jeep identified Campbell from a photo lineup.

Campbell was arrested by the Atmore Police Department. He was also wanted on three outstanding failure to appear warrants from Escambia County, Ala.

    @ Just sayin’

I understand that injurie to the head can cause all kinds of issues or problems. And your whole in depth paragraph on head injuries is very much correct. However, someone who knows this guy would have noticed the symptoms and checked him into a hospital, and let authorities know that they were not looking for some crazy guy running from the scene of an accident. Instead, a manhunt insued. Now, yes a brain injury could have caused him some confusion and maybe he disoriently ran off. However, three outstanding failure to appear warrants can have the same effects as a brain injury, in these same circumstances. You know as well as I do, that if I flip my vehicle, there will be an Officer at the scene. And if I am already a wanted fugitive, I would not be hanging around to give my statement. Just sayin’ ….

Well, Mike, a head injury can do that. Traumatic brain injuries (TBI) can do so many things to a person, from as minor as forgetfulness or mood swings to completely changing your personality (from gentle to violent or vice versa) to being unable to walk, talk, think…..becoming what we would call a vegetable. That’s why we have neurological rehabilitation facilities….to help them relearn as much as they can. It used to be a little known area of medicine that wasn’t given much attention but research has come a long way and we now have doctors and facilities who specialize in this, including psychiatrists and psychologists because, again, it changes everything about the person. They will no longer be the same person you knew before.

Now…..I’m not saying that’s what happened with this guy because the Failure to Appear warrants tend to make it look as if this is a common pattern with him. I just wanted to explain that head injuries can make you do some really strange things.

I can’t wait to hear the reason he gives for leaving the scene and waiting for the police to find him. Keep us informed!
