July 17, 2012
A wreck Monday afternoon near Flomaton led to a manhunt for a driver believed to have been seriously injured…and now a warrant has been issued for his arrest.
Witnesses identified the driver as Steven Michael Campbell, Jr., 38, of Atmore. He is now wanted on an outstanding warrant for leaving the scene of an accident without injuries.
The accident happened about 3:40 p.m. in the 3600 block of Old Atmore Road near Fowler lane, about two-tenths of mile north of the Alabama/Florida line.
Officials said Campbell lost control of of a Jeep Grand Cherokee and overturned several times before he jumped out and ran. Witnesses told first responders that Campbell was bleeding severely from his head.
The Escambia County (Ala.) Sheriff’s Office, Flomaton Police Department, tracking dogs from Fountain Prison near Atmore, LifeFlight and the Flomaton Fire Department looked for the Campbell unsuccessfully for about an hour.
Witnesses described the Campbell as wearing plaid shorts and a dark or black shirt at the time of the wreck.

Maybe he had a hematoma to the brain and it was affecting his behavior? He may be in a state of amnesia?
It’s obvious he had mental problems……..he stole a car with an Auburn tag!!!!
If you saw the man, call Law Enforcement or Crime Stoppers if you don’t want to give your name. That is how you help catch criminals.
I’ll tell you what’s up…if they planned to use a tracking dog, and according to the article they did, the patrol deputies (and everyone else for that matter) need to stay OUT of the woods so there is no scent contamination.
Sounds like we haven’t heard all the details, yet. Regardless, I hope the guy’s o.k. We don’t know the circumstances that led up to this, yet.
to rhonda the man is bald…
bleeding severely but they only searched for him for one hour???i mean so is he dead two hundred yards in the woods???we need to hire officals that aren’t scared to actually get out of there patroll cars…i was at the scene and it was fouty five minutes after police arrival befor anyone went itno the woods…now you tell me whats up???
Just wondering if there was a possible way the authorities could let the residents of the area know when someone is on the loose like this. All we were told was that it was a bad accident. Several families in the area are furious to learn about it this morning on North Escambia. We live within a mile of the accident close to a wooded area and have young children that play outside. If someone was desperate enough to run from an accident he had been seriously hurt in, shouldn’t we have known for our safety?
This happened in front of our rd, we live on fowler ln, it was stolen, but they know who it is…the owner and his ex wife came out there its the ex wives boyfriend..so its just a matter of time they will get him
WAR. EAGLE!!
I do hope they catch the thief!
The vehicle was stolen but they do know who he was b/c the owners had reported the vehicle stolen.
If this vehicle wasn’t stolen it should be pretty easy to find the driver. I’m sure he medical attention.
I belive I saw this man walking down Hacker road toward hwy 29 ….appeared something was wrong with his leg…he was a white man dark hair small build wearing plaid shorts …he also had something wrong with his right leg.
Stay Classy Auburn.
couldn’t they get his informaion from the tag, if it wasn’t stolen, if he borrowed it then the owners know him or should.
