Fire Damages Atmore Home; Firefighter Injured

July 5, 2012

Two people were left homeless after a house fire in Atmore Wednesday night — the second house fire in the city in less than 24 hours. And, also for the second time in a day, an Atmore firefighter was sent to the hospital.

The fire was reported about 8:55 in the 1100 block of Horner Street, with a 911 caller reporting smoke pouring from an attic vent. No one was at home at the time of the fire; a mother and five-year old child had left the home about an hour before the fire.

The cause of the blaze remains under investigation.

One Atmore firefighter was transported to Atmore Community Hospital due to heat exhaustion.

The Atmore Fire Department, Poarch Fire Department and the Walnut Hill Station of Escambia Fire Rescue responded to the fire, along with Atmore Ambulance the Atmore Police Department.

Late Tuesday night, another Atmore house fire claimed the life of an 11-year old girl and sent five first responders to the hospital. For an earlier story about that fire, click here.

It is o tragic @ these fires & the loss of life & property. The firemen are doing an excellent job & should be paid one-half at least, of what a Senator makes. I wonder if the first house had working smoke alarms. I think there should be some regular TV warnings @ keeping smoke alarms active & up to date. Maybe that 11 year old would have not perished if a smoke alarm went off to warn her in time.

Thank you for the coverage of this house fire. It is a blessing to see the house I grew up in still standing. The pictures gave me great relief.

Kudos to the firefighters that fought this blaze. Porch Fire Dept was on scene also. I just wanted to say thank you to these firefighters that risk injury and life every time they go out on a call. You are all my heroes!

It was amazing to watch these guys jump out of their vehicles, grab their gear, get into their gear, some of it as they ran toward danger. These guys are special.

I’m so glad no one was home when this started. I hope the firefighter that got hurt is ok today.
