Cutbacks Planned For Century Post Office

July 5, 2012

There will be cutbacks at the Century Post Office next month, but postal officials say the public won’t notice — unless an upcoming study recommends more drastic changes.

Effective August 11, rural mail carriers working out of the Century Post Office will instead work out of the Jay Post Office. The retail window and post office boxes in Century will remain unchanged  in the short term.

“We will then evaluate the Century Post Office in September to determine the best future  use of resources,” Sam Bolen, spokesman for the U.S. Postal Service said.

That evaluation, Bolen said, could result in no changes, decreased hours of service or even closure. In the event any changes recommended to retail hours or post office boxes at the Century Post Office, a public meeting will first be held for community input.

That meeting could happen at any point between September 2012 and September 2014. Adequate public notice of any meeting will be given, Bolen said. Any decision about the post office would not come until 15 to 30 days after a public meeting.

When you retired from the military, you would go down take the postal exam and were pretty much a shoein to a position. Now that is no longer the case as reduced demand and higher operating cost less funding, are reducing staff and closing doors.

When the base closures and reductions increase, that is going to be a real hard blow to this area. I cannot see Hurlburt and Eglin closing due to the missions of those bases. The state of the art Naval Regional Medical Center is not likely to close. Perhaps things will not go so bad for this area, hopefully.

Sorry to see Centurys Post Office will not have carriers. So glad it isn’t closing
down. I really think every Community should have a school, and a postoffice.
This is how you lose your idenity as a place. with a name.
Every time this happens it still pops into my mind is this just another step to make Escambia County, Pensacola. I don’t like the idea of a county that is fifty miles long having our little place identified.
As for doing all your business on line there alot of people who do not do on line business. There are people in their 70’s, 80’s and 90’s who donot know how to operate a computer. The Postal Service has one job and that is to serve the public.

    REGARDING:
“The less schools we have the less bus drivers needed. Anyway you look at it is jobs lost.”

true, but I was looking for a job when I found this one.

I would hate to have a job that existed solely to give me a job, that didn’t really serve others, that was only given to me out of pity

    David for online schools.

    REGARDING:
“Wake up people this is what happens when everyone starts getting their bills online and pays them online.”

Yep, and we intend to continue to do so.
We don’t exist to serve the post office.
    It exists to serve us.
We need fewer services from it so we don’t spend as much of our money on it.

If my snail mail came once a week, I would survive somehow. Others would be more inconvenienced but if there aren’t enough of them to continue to keep it going the same way, changes are in order.

People can continue to get service at the window, so there really isn’t all that much of a change. The rural route carriers can leave in time to start their routes the same time as they currently do, so that shouldn’t be a problem.

The only real problem’s if the whole thing goes belly up.
Or if the Internet went down.

    David for needed services

Everyone has got to face the fact that the world changes..no more telegraph messages, no Pony Express & now no snail mail..If you don’t believe it, why aren’t you reading the newspaper instead of a computer for your news?

This has got to Obamas fault he seems to be the blaim for every one loosing there job or could I be wrong that the mismanagement of the postal system started before he became president.

Oh great…now I can wait even longer for the mail to arrive at my house. Not to mention to fact that I already get every persons mail that doesn’t even live on this road. Guess I’ll be getting Jays mail now. Plus have to wait longer for whoever loves to read my magazines before I get them. And while I’m at it lets don’t forget that I don’t get sales papers and fliers on time so the sale is already over when I get them or that my Grandkids don’t get their books like they are suppose to, or that things that in bold big print say “DO NOT BEND” and it all bent up. Whew….I’ve said enough, got myself all in a tizzy now.

Well of course they will close the Century Post Office….along with every other “benefit” that makes life for us a little easier. I realize the USPS has been suffering and that cuts need to be made, but when I moved here I liked that I could live somewhat in the country and still have access to municipal resources like the drivers’ license office, tax collector, library, etc. It didn’t last long…

The Postal Service loses Billions of dollars and must make drastic cuts. Is there anything the Gov’t runs that doesn’t turn into a pile of s. . . having cream. Not sure having everything out of Jay, saves them much money unless they can cut a postal inspector position or other positions. All the mail still has to be delivered and they plan to maintain a counter service in Century.
