Deputies Investigate As Bricks Are Thrown Through Windshields

July 10, 2012

Deputies are looking for the person or persons that have been throwing bricks into the windshields of vehicles in Escambia County.

The latest of six incidents occurred early Monday morning on Highway 297A at Pine Cone Drive, about a mile west of Pine Forest Road. The victim was traveling south on Highway 297A when someone threw a brick at his Jeep Grand Cherokee.  The brick bounced off the hood and through his windshield, sending shattered glass all over the vehicle.

The man was not seriously injured. He drove to a nearby Circle K at Pine Forest and Nine Mile roads and called for help.

Anyone with information about the brick attacks is asked to call Escambia County Crime Stoppers at (850) 433-STOP.

I noticed Escambia County Deputies at this intersection this evening. I hope they can catch these people before someone gets hurt.

The brick thrown at my car was tossed out of an oncoming vehicle and I’m almost positive that the driver chucked it. I didn’t notice high beams, possibly because they were following closely behind another vehicle. Sadly, I also couldn’t tell what kind of vehicle they were driving. I was driving about 45 mph.

What sucks about this happening on 297A is that it’s a main thoroughfare to Cantonment. I can’t get home without driving this stretch. It makes me want to get home before dark and stay there.

David, I also saw that on the news about the bright lights. Would be nice for them to try that on someone with a vehicle sporting a nice row of spotlights on top. Flip ‘em on and blind the suckers, maybe run them off into a ditch, brick in hand. The ultimate failure to launch.

Linda for revenge in a perfect world. :-)

    REGARDING:
“was this brick thrown from an oncoming vehicle or from the side of the road somewhere or is it completely unknown?”

I noticed on the news this morning (or was it yesterday?) they mentioned the vehicles had just met another vehicle with its bright lights on prior to the brick. While this isn’t knowledge, it suggests the bricks came from the oncoming vehicle and that the driver was trying to blind them enough that they couldn’t identify him.

    David for brickproof glass
    and fewer sorry people

The article states ” the brick bounced off the hood and through the windshield”.
Wow! There had to be quite a force behind the thrown brick and from the looks of the shape in the broken windshield it looks as if the brick hit it on its horizontal side. Which is wierd especially from bouncing off the hood and also it stated there was shattered glass? This is scary. I worry eveytime my child gets in the car especially alone. Always, I am skeptic…These days we don’t know who to trust.

I’m confused . . . was this brick thrown from an oncoming vehicle or from the side of the road somewhere or is it completely unknown? If it is occurring in the same general area it might point to juveniles (which I would suspect) because I can’t believe anyone 16 or older (someone with car) would be doing something that completely stupid! Crimestoppers needs to offer a reward so that someone that knows about it would be smart enough to turn them in, I am sure they have been bragging about it (even stupider)!

If they catch these thugs they should be charged with “attempted murder”.If they are not caught and continue..it might would have to be changed to “murder”.I think Dr.Phil’s wife’s sister had someone drop a brick into her windshield from an overpass and had to have multiple surgeries on her face.

Even if the thrown object does not hit you, it breaks the windshield. Safety glass, by its nature, does not shatter into shards of glass. It does break down into pellets of glass, and even more dangerous, minute splinters of a glass dust, which are whipped around by the outside air entering the vehicle. This is very hazardous to the human eye….a lot harder to deal with than this dust in your hair , or in your clothing. Just for your consideration.

Some people need to GROW UPP, ! So childish that doesnt make them cool as they think ! Oneday when they grow up and get a car 7 a brick flies thru theier window maybe they will udnerstand its not so funny

I completely agree! The victims are the ones being punished!

I have no doubt that these are the same criminals that smashed my windshield in May. I have the same damage but thankfully the brick didn’t go through my windshield. Mine happened in the same location during the Memorial Day weekend.

I was traveling north on Hwy 297A and they threw the brick at me between Pine Cone & Hwy 97. As I understood from the Escambia deputy who took my report, there have been more than 6 incidents.

Mine resulted in $1600 in damage.

if the brick was thrown form a car going 30 mph into the windsheld of the approching car going 30mph the impack would be 60mph .thats fast enough to go thorugh a wind sheld. and know one would be speeding.

This infuriates me to learn this!!! I just had a very close friend die there in a trgic car accident…also covered by northescambia.com…at 297a and Eight Mile Creek Rd. To think there are people out there that could cause another tragic accident like that that could cause so many people to mourn the loss of a loved one like we have been for Bubba is so upsetting to me right now!!! This is not a joke…nothing funny about it at all! We need to get people with no reguard for human life off the streets!!! Especially that one… RIP Bubba.

“It is rather difficult to create a hole like that in a modern windshield. I have to wonder just how fast that Jeep Cherokee was traveling. Perhaps there is a vehicle vehicle speed vigilanty out there.”

And there you have it blaming the victim for getting his/her windshield smashed and possibly losing their life.

I can’t help but think these lil thugs are standing by laughing. This is very dangerous and its unforntunate. I hope they get caught. We need more strict punishment for these crimes. Its always a slap on the wrist. The only ones that are punished are the victims..

  16. Richard on July 10th, 2012 9:57 am

When the criminals know the officers are scared to do their job they escalate their activity. Eventually someone will be killed!

” ‘wanna be ruffians’ “, Old Goldie? They’re not “wannabes”, they’ve arrived – people have died in the past from assaults like these. They need to be apprehended, prosecuted and punished.

  18. 429SCJ on July 10th, 2012 7:15 am

A brick through the windshield sounds like deadly force to me.

Be mindful of your target’s backgrounds as this is a residential area.

  19. Old Goldie on July 10th, 2012 7:12 am

How mean, disrespectful, and childish. Probably kids thinking this is fun and not realizing they could kill someone and go to jail for a long, long time. Hope they catch these ‘wanna be ruffians’ and do more than slap them on the wrist.

  20. G.M. on July 10th, 2012 5:41 am

Wow erica funny and not funny at the same time. Dangerous game to play. Hope they can catch whoever it is. Stuff like that can really end bad for both parties.
