ZZ Top: Atmore Concert Canceled Due To Stage Safety Concerns

June 12, 2012

Classic rock groups ZZ Top and 3 Doors Down canceled their show Friday night in Atmore over safety concerns over a potential stage collapse.

The scheduled concert at the Wind Creek Hotel & Casino Amphitheater was canceled based on a determination that the structural condition of the stage made it unsafe for the performers, their crews and the audience.

“This is due to numerous safety issues concerning the structural integrity of the stage, which included a significant risk of a potential stage collapse,” a statement by 3 Doors Down said.

“We’re definitely from ‘the show must go on’ school but had to draw the line this time when we found out that numerous hazards were present at the venue. We couldn’t, in good conscience, do the show knowing that the safety for those on and off stage would be in jeopardy,” said a statement released by ZZ Top Monday morning. “We had hoped the situation would have been addressed and corrected by show time but, sadly, that wasn’t the case so we just had to ‘pull the plug’ for the sake of all concerned. We hope our fans and friends understand that the decision that was made was the only one we could abide in light of those conditions.”

Members of ZZ Top were seen Saturday evening before showtime at the Food World grocery store and Jalisco’s Mexican Restaurant in Atmore.

The cancellation has made national news, reported in publications like Rolling Stone.

    Response to Real Deal,

I am a rigger and have done tours for many years. I saw the stage at Wind Creek May 5th for Cheech and Chong. The stage and lighting truss that I saw were poorly rigged and I am not surprised that the show was canceled if it were the same stage. I have rigged ZZ Top before and their show carries considerably gear than most acts. While it could easily carry the light load for C & C (basically to 40′ trusses of Par 64’s) What ZZ Top uses would overload the staging that Wind Creek and their vendor supplies. Not saying anything bad about anyone but safety is paramount. ZZ Top and all acts send what is known as a ‘rider’ which specifies technical specifications for everything from the stage dimensions and lighting and sound requirements to catering. Most acts try to fulfill their part of the contract amid many unforeseen circumstances and difficult situations because of the fans but sometimes it just doesn’t happen.

If Creek is it’s own Govt., then why are they always getting money from MY Govt.??? We all pay taxes on ALL monies we take in, why shouldn’t Creek? I don’t have children in school, so how does Creek giving monies to local schools help the rest of the community?? Pay you due taxes, afterall, MY Govt., will be sending you a check anyway……

Just want to correct someone’s earlier post, The Wharf has their own roof and stage..

Enough about PCI not paying taxes. PCI is a government.. Governments do not pay taxes. Only a fraction of PCI land is “in trust” and not subject to property taxes. They pay taxes on over 5000 acres. If the casino is subject to taxation, then there can be no gaming. No gaming equals lost jobs for at least 2000 people. All those people (tribal and non tribal members) pay state and federal income taxes on their wages. The only tax we are talking about is property tax….the bulk of which goes to education. PCI more than contributes to education. This is about closing the casino, nothing more, nothing less. Outsiders with an agenda hood winked the Escambia County Commission.

It’s hard to believe yet you get exposed to it every day, you can’t avoid ignorance.

It doesn’t matter a persons age when you can rock it – you can rock it

as to the stage well when we have a storm system like we just had, forget it now i’ll

have to explain storm system!!!!!!!!!!! There is no fix for stupid !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Must have been some serious issues if they could not be remedied while the band waited.
    What were the issues anyway?

Vallarta’s? you got to be kidding. You might as well make it at home. zz top were great in the 70′, but sold out to pop. Still a great show tho.

Since the Creek Indians don’t have to pay taxes, can’t they afford a better stage & seating? You would think they could do better, right? It’s quite embarassing.

  9. Truthseeker on June 12th, 2012 9:30 am

Maybe they knew if the stage collapsed they couldn’t sue WC so they figured it too risky since they couldn’t be held accountable since they throw that sovereign immunity card around so freely.

First of all the casino does NOT own the stage the Casino has a company to come out and put the stage up In fact the stage is the same stage used sometimes at the wharf and down on the beach for numerous singers .Second these guys were very demanding for there time spent at Casino of which the Casino would have had to pay them several hundred thousand dollars to perform but being the performers cancelled the casino is not obligated to pay them .zz tops manager was given all the information about the stage and who installs it before they agreed to come .So I can understand if they felt it was unsafe BUT they made the choice the casino didnt .ALSO everything spoken here is not speculation or opinion these are the facts @William you can email me and I can prove it

BTW, 3 Doors Down is NOT a classic rock group. Not that it really matters I guess, but they started out in 2000 with “Kryptonite”….is that classic rock? I’m thinking not.

  12. kathy on June 12th, 2012 8:49 am

i would rather had seen 3 doors down anyway!

  13. kathy on June 12th, 2012 8:46 am

Brett Michaels had his concert in an electrical storm with his big hair and make up and it was one of the best Wind Creek has seen!

  14. Rob Williams on June 12th, 2012 8:39 am

The guys STILL are rockin’ even into their 60’s. That’s NOT the issue. Go back to last summer, when Sugarland played the Indiana State Fair, the stage collapsed in a storm, before they played, killed 3 people, now the band is being sued, even though they were just the “hired help” Bands and venue owners are even more “risk averse” so they go with “caution” in whatever move they make.
Water and electric guitars, amps, speakers and high powered stage lights don’t mix well. They can always reschedule. But can you imagine being in Food World and Dusty, Billy and Frank are in the check out line?

  15. Procon on June 12th, 2012 8:02 am

If that stage can hold up to Reba’s huge ensemble it should be able to hold three guys…even with the beards.

  16. bigR on June 12th, 2012 7:53 am

man i cant believe the greed and negativity shown in some of these comments come on people think. before speaking those guys are getting old , they still put on a real great show cause they love the music, but they are getting old they cant afford to perform in the rain and get pneumonia. ask yoyurself what do you do if you are working outside and it starts raining. i’m sure they will be back to make up for it. zz top rules.

  17. Drrake on June 12th, 2012 7:25 am

You kno what’s funny, there has been how many concerts out there and how many times has the staage not held up?? I’m thinking safety hasn’t been a problem before so why now?? Let’s all get real here we kno the real reason they cancled itt! A little shy!

  18. find it funny on June 12th, 2012 6:44 am

Find it funny that they unloaded 2 trucks on stage before it started raining.the stage didn’t come into play until the rain started coming down.they were just looking to get paid w/o having to play.

  19. Jane on June 12th, 2012 5:54 am

Safety first! Maybe they will re-schedule later on? Let’s hope so…ZZ Top puts on a great show. I’m glad they are concerned about the safety of people, theirs and others. And considering all the places they have been, I am quite sure they are familiar with Mexican food…I saw them eating at an excellent Mexican restaurant in California.

  20. nocomfort on June 12th, 2012 5:10 am

The stage and seating could be better…….A LOT!!!!!!

  21. jayjay on June 12th, 2012 2:46 am

so are they not going to reschedule to come back?

  22. Wow on June 12th, 2012 2:34 am

Wow. Seriously? I can not believe the two comments left before mine………

    Whatever.

  23. 429SCJ on June 12th, 2012 2:31 am

I saw ZZ in Mobile back in 77, they seemed tired. The Kiss show in 76, now there was a concert.

Someguy and Amused I ask, who will stop the rain?

  24. Mnon on June 12th, 2012 2:01 am

ZZ Top puts on a great show, I’ve seen them three times. It’s a shame WC couldn’t get things together for them to perform. Now everyone missed out on a great show.

Oh no they ate at Jalisco’s?! They don’t even know what a chili relleno is! To them its a pile of dogfood over rice, topped with a bell pepper. ZZ Top would have had better luck to roll the dice and done the show than ate there. Next time wait 45min and drive to Vallarta’s in Pensacola, ZZ.

  25. someguy on June 12th, 2012 1:19 am

They didn’t make themselves look bad, they made the whole area look bad.

  26. amused on June 12th, 2012 1:15 am

Hah, you’d think that since the Creek Indians have so much money that they would have bought a better stage! Now they just made theirself look bad. They better get it fixed before they have anymore concerts.
